    Fort Hamer on the Manatee River was quickly established in the period of the Indian Scare of 1849 and built by the Army to house some of its forces. It was a major installation for a very brief period of time when it was abandoned and the materials reused to construct other buildings at Fort Casey and Fort Myers, Florida. The area today known as Holmes Beach was first inhabited by non-native homesteaders in the 1890s. The Cobb family were the first settlers on the island and established the first Post Office on Anna Maria Island in 1902. Holmes Beach is named for Jack Holmes, a real estate developer who added on to the Cobb family's work with a 600 acre planned community after World War II. In 1960, Holmes Beach officially became an established city
