When visiting the 40 paintings of "Alex Katz Under the Stars: American Landscapes 1951-1995," the hardest thing for people to accept may be that they do not hide some deep social or psychological meaning. We are conditioned to expect a message from art, and when the art is as immediately accessible and easy to look at as Katz's, we're inclined to think the simplicity must be deceptive. "What the painting is is more important than what it means," says Alex Katz. "I'm trying to get meaning out of the room.

"Andrew Wyeth: America's Painter," an exhibition organized by the Greenville (SC) County Museum of Art to coincide with the Olympic Games, will be at the BMA from September 25 through February 16, 1997. The last day for Baltimore museum-goers to see the Cone Collection before it leaves for Japan is Sept. 8. At 79, Wyeth continues to paint in Chadds Ford, Pa., and Cushing, Maine, and is among the most admired contemporary realist painters. The BMA's last Andrew Wyeth exhibition was shown in 1966. The upcoming exhibit emphasizes the artist's recent work: Nearly half of the 50 objects were completed between 1990 and 1994. However, there will also be works from classic Wyeth series, including those of the Olson and Kuerner families and model Helga Testorf, whom he painted during the 1970s

That nothing reflects a major gap in our education, for between 3,000 B.C. and the first centuries A.D., precisely the period of Egypt's greatness, Nubia was an important presence in the ancient world. It had a well-developed civilization and an art which, though influenced by Egypt's, was independent and in some ways more creative. At times Nubia rivaled Egypt in power and, at one point, actually conquered and ruled Egypt for about 100 years. This mysterious land is brought to light in "Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa," opening at the Baltimore Museum of Art on Wednesday. It's an exhibit of more than 300 works dating from about 3500 B.C. to 1000 A.D. From bracelets to bed legs, from swords and arrowheads to ceramics decorated with lively animals, these works shed light on this unknown land
