    Winter Term in England (1986)

    This video titled, Winter Term In England, highlighted Elon Study Abroad students who traveled in January of 1986. The video began in Amsterdam Airport in January of 1986 with the plane taking off homeward bound to the United States. 00:04:26 There were video shots of students sleeping on the plane used as a production technique, as dreaming of their study abroad experiences. 00:04:44 Students were walking and site seeing in the city of Bath, England. 00:10:53 A Bath curator explained The Abbey Church and the Roman Baths. 00:12:31 The Elon students were on the plane traveling and sleeping, again. 00:13:09 The Tower of London curator explained to the students about The Tower and the official Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. 00:16:29 The students visited Warwick Castle. Students were seen strolling down the streets of Stratford Upon-Avon. 00:19:11 The Elon Study Abroad program traveled on the train to Scotland. 00:20:45 In Scotland, the students were hosted at a traditional Scottish Banquet in Edinburgh with food and bag pipes. 00:25:03 The students were dancing traditional Scottish dances. 00:25:39 Raymond (Ray) Johnson danced a traditional Scottish dance. 00:28:02 The students studied the Edinburgh Castle. 00:31:50 The students were on the plane sleeping, listening to music, and reading. 00:32:17 The next destination was Stonehenge (Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England). 00:34:58 Dover was the next stop on the study abroad trip. 00:36:45 Canterbury followed Dover, England. 00:37:47 The students talked about London as they travelled on the London Underground rail system. 00:39:07 The students enjoyed an Elizabethan Banquet. 00:39:51 Elon students sat with an actress who was dressed as the Queen of England during the Elizabethan Banquet. 00:41:23 The banquet attendees formed and danced a line dance. 00:43:05 In Amsterdam, Holland was the last stop for the Elon Study Abroad trip. 00:49:46 The plane landed at Kennedy Airport, New York, on January 28, 1986.     This video titled, Leaders of the 21st Century, was held in McKinnon Hall in the spring of 1998. Julianne Maher, Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided words of welcome. She stated, This is a time to celebrate Elon’s Teaching Fellows, Leaders of the 21st Century Fellows, and the Honors Fellows. 00:08:28 Gerald (Jerry) Dillashaw, paid tribute to the teaching fellows. 00:10:59 The 1998 Elon Teaching Fellows were recognized by Glenda W. Crawford. 00:11:13 A wide shot of the teaching students stood to have their name called and be presented with a plaque by Dillashaw. 00:14:03 Sitting behind Dillashaw was Maher, Rexford (Rex) Waters, Isabella Cannon, and John Barnhill. 00:15:28 John Barnhill recognized the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows and honored Isabella Cannon. The camera moved to Isabella Cannon as she blew kisses to the audience. In 1998, Isabella Cannon turned 94 and Elon celebrated with a birthday cake. 00:18:39 Waters spoke of the final Leadership Fellows dinner. 00:20:00 Waters asked the Isabella Cannon Fellows to stand. The shot was a wide shot and the camera saw the backs of Verona and J. Earl Danieley in their seats with other guests. 00:20:39 The students are presented with a leadership medallion by Isabella Cannon and with a plaque by John Barnhill. 00:29:11 Dan Wright spoke of how this was his first year as the Honors Director at Elon College. 00:31:43 The Elon Honors Fellows were presented with a certificate and an honors pin. 00:43:50 The ceremony ended.     This video titled, Elon Experiences: Study Abroad, was a produced marketing piece for Elon’s Study Abroad program in 1999. This was a program where Elon students took their education on the road. London Bridge in London, England was in seen in the video. As of 1999, Elon students have studied on every continent, except Antarctica. When a student studies abroad, a student was to explore a culture or many cultures for hands-on learning. A video shot of Big Ben in London, England was seen in the video. The Elon Study Abroad program was nationally recognized in 1999. Unknown named Elon students spoke about their experiences studying abroad. Elon students studying abroad were seen in this video. Chambers Brumbaugh was leading Elon students in Costa Rica. Sylvia Munoz was teaching. Smith Jackson on a two tier London bus in London, England was shown. Elon Study Abroad began three decades ago and the program in 1999 has grown very quickly. The Elon Study Abroad program participation has jumped from 20 to 40 percent. According to the The Chronicle, Elon ranks fifth in the nation among master degree institutions. There were semester long study abroad programs at Elon, as well as, Winter Term. Elon in the future will continue to concentrate on Study Abroad programs in line with the student’s academic course work. Elon was expanding their Study Abroad programs where English was not the primary language. Viewpoints from Elon students on their study abroad experiences were expressed in this video. Students expressed the impact of studying abroad on their everyday circumstances and situations as a human being. This video was produced by The Office of Television Services

    This video, titled Elon Campaign Victory News2 coverage, was an off-air recording in 1994. The North Carolina State Advisory Budget Commission met at Elon College to discuss the 1995 budget. The state’s independent colleges wanted to increase state tuition grants to students who attend private colleges. The video piece was produced by Dave Wright of local News2 (WFMY), Greensboro, North Carolina. In the video piece, J. Fred Young, President of Elon College, showed Elon’s campus to the North Carolina Budget Commissioners. Young reminded the commissioners that it costs the state 6,000.00moretosendastudenttoastateuniversitythanitdoestomakeatuitiongranttotheprivatesystem.VisualsofAlumniGymwereseenfortheElonsCelebrationVictoryDinner.TheVictoryCelebrationraised6,000.00 more to send a student to a state university than it does to make a tuition grant to the private system. Visuals of Alumni Gym were seen for the Elon’s Celebration Victory Dinner. The Victory Celebration raised 21 million in private donations. Young stated that Elon had incorporated a totally new academic curriculum and completed a successful fundraising campaign to provide funds for two new buildings. In addition, he boasted that Elon College has enrolled the largest and most academically-talented student body in Elon’s history. The new Moseley Center was designed for Elon’s student organizations. Elon College junior, John Keegan, was interviewed for the news piece. Keegan spoke of how students enjoy the fireplace in Moseley Center. He also spoke of the reasons why he enrolled in Elon College. In closing, Wright (News2 reporter) spoke of the Elon College student-to-faculty ratio in his closing stand-up. A name included: Sandra Hughes

    This raw video, titled Charlotte Smith, Head Women's Basketball Coach, Post Game Reaction, to the Elon season in March 2018 at the NCAA’s First and Second Rounds tournament. Elon lost against North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. Smith stated, “I am incredibly proud of our team and in the season that we had. And just really proud of our seniors and everything that you have contributed to this program over the four years. Just really disappointed that we had to go out this way, because we did not play our best basketball today. We got into a lot of foul trouble, early in the game that took us out of our rhythm, offensively. We never felt a rhythm from the first quarter, but I told them to let’s continue to fight in this game and do not give up. So, I am proud of the team. Dave Blank, Athletic Director, announced on June 22, 2011 that Charlotte Smith would lead the Elon’s Women Basketball team as Head Coach. Smith has spent the last nine years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, The University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill, where she had an All-American career topped by a last-second shot that earned UNC the national title in 1995

    This video, titled Share Your Chair by Making a Gift Today, was produced by University Communications on April 16, 2018. Three alumni sat in a maroon chair at various campus locations and spoke of “What Does Commencement Mean to You?” They all focused on the experience of their four years of education at Elon University. In addition, they all said that they could have not done it without the support of others (alumni) and this is why they share their chair with future Elon students. The three alumni included: Ian Baltutis, Class of 2008; Courtney Vaughn, Class of 2015; and Sharon Wheeler, Class of 1978

    This video, titled Why an Elon Education, was produced by University Communications in 2018. This promotional video was narrated by an Elon student. She stated, “There is something liberating about seeing education as something that can be used, not just for knowing, but for doing. The idea of that it is not just the ivory tower. It is not just reading books, but that you have to incorporate that with social practice or else it is not meaningful. It is not anything.” The video shots included: an aerial of Elon’s Historic Neighborhood; Lambert’s Academic Village; a student working on a project in a classroom; theatre students practicing; an aerial of Loy Farm solar panels; students tending to the Loy Farm garden; and students walking on campus. The video concluded with a graphic that read, “Come Experience for Yourself.”
