Identificazione di prodotti ittici mediante dna barcoding Fish identification by dna barcoding

ABSTRACT – The authors developed and evaluated DNA barcodes for use in differentiating domestic and imported fish species (1). First, we sequenced part of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene in accordance with standard DNA barcoding protocols. These alignments allowed the development and analyses of consensus barcode sequences for each species and comparison with limited sequences in public databases (GenBank and Barcode of Life Data Systems). In this study, we report test regarding Mediterranean fish identifications. Experimental validation parameters were obtained on certain specie-specific DNA and sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility, concordance tests role out value as 100%, 100%, 99%, 99.8% respectively. The advantage of using “CO1”gene is that it is short enough to be sequenced quickly and cheaply yet long enough to identify variations among species, and enabling identifications where traditional methods are not “applicable, such as for immature stages or body fragments (2). FISH-BOL will also provide a powerful tool for enhanced understanding of the natural history and ecological interactions of fish species

Selection of young ewe lambs according to their antral follicular count: response to exogenous hormonal stimulation and fertility at first breeding season

Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), Antral Follicular Count (AFC) and the response to exogenous hormonal stimulation have been used, in adults, as suitable markers to determine the ovarian reserve (1-4), to predict oocyte quality (5,6) and a wide variety of fertility indices (6-9). This investigation aims to evaluate if animals selected according to their High or Low AFC at an early prepubertal age show different responses, in the number of follicles and AMH plasma levels, to exogenous hormonal stimulation; to verify whether differences are maintained over time until puberty; and to observe possible variations on fertility at first breeding season

Seven horses were submitted to conventional drilling sessions, during two consecutive weeks. Blood samples were drawn before and after drilling sessions. Compared to basal values, horses submitted to drilling sessions during 2 weeks showed lower glucose levels post exercise at the 3 rd day, and higher lactate levels post exercise both after the 1st and 2nd week of drilling. Compared to basal values, Hgb and Hct showed higher levels post exercise at the 1st day of 1st week; Plt and Pct showed higher levels post exercise at the 2nd and 3rd day of both 1st and 2nd week. HR, RR, RT showed a trend to increase in all postexercise sampling times. No significant differences were observed between the 2 drilling week sessions on hematological, hematochemical and functional values

ABSTRACT - The electrolyte and biochemical variables were evaluated in 8 healthy mares, aged 4-10 years. Blood samples were taken after the 8th month of gestation, and then, every 30 days, for 3 consecutive months. During the lactation, blood samples were taken in the day 7, 15, 30 post partum. Mares were bled from the jugular vein between 7:30-9:00 AM. The purpose of this study was to determine which physiological changes occur in serum clinical biochemical analytes in pregnant and lactating mares and to determine whether the changes between pregnancy and lactation conditions are significant. Two way RMANOVA showed significant effects of lactation on the changes of all electrolytes and hematochemical variables, with higher levels of Na+, Pi and urea, and lower levels of Na+, Ca++, K+, creatinine, bilirubin and triglycerides in lactation than in pregnancy

Zoological gardens play a fundamental role as regards species conservation’s project and they pay particular attention to studies on improving animal’s well-being, as the maintenance of captivity animals in good physical and psychological conditions. Considering this, the present study wants to evaluate how and how much captivity may influence behavior of wild animals kept in zoological gardens, particularly observing guest’s effect on well-being, using ethological and physiological indicators. The research, realized on a lions colony kept in the safari division of ‘Parco Natura Viva ‘ in Bussolengo (VR, Italy), had the following objectives: (1) to evaluate the influence of vehicles presence and numbers on lions behavior, with particular attention on abnormal behaviors which can be stress related or due to lacking of well-being (i.e. apathy or hyperactivity, enhancement of aggressive interaction between the lions and stereotypies); (2) to evaluate the variation of fecal levels of cortisol metabolites in relation to the flood of guests, so that to determine if and in how much the presence and number of cars can provoke stress on animals
