Experimental Results of Local Backprojection for Monostatic THz SAR Imaging
The use of THz frequencies has enabled the opportunity to perform synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imaging at the sub-mm level. It is of great interest for applications where high-resolution remote sensing in short range is required. However, with the increase of the operating frequencies from microwave to THz, the SAR image formation algorithms work with a larger amount of data and become more sensitive to phase errors that can be caused by insufficient signal sampling rate or physical factors that cause platform deviations. This motivates the use of fast image formation capable to handle phase errors. In this paper, we present the experimental results on the performance of the local backprojection (LBP) algorithm for processing THz SAR signals. The LBP algorithm has been tested with the real data in the frequency range 0.325-0.5 THz. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the LBP algorithm for the SAR scene reconstruction and highlight the necessity of the use of two times higher signal upsampling to achieve reconstruction accuracy similar to the global backprojection algorithm.

Sensor Free Fill-Level Forecasting and AI-Driven (NSGA-II) Route Optimization for Multi-Compartment Waste Collection
Background: Urbanization and the increasing volume of municipal solid waste challenge traditional fixed-route collection strategies. Sensor-based smart waste systems offer a solution, but are costly to deploy at scale. This thesis explores a cost-effective alternative by combining machine learning (ML) for fill-level forecasting and evolutionary multi-objective optimization for waste collection routing, specifically targeting multi-compartment vehicles without relying on real-time sensors. Objectives: The primary objective is to develop a modular framework comprising(1) a sensor-free waste fill-level prediction module based on sequence-to-sequence neural networks, and (2) a multi-objective route optimization module using a customized Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The goal is to accurately forecast container fill levels and to generate efficient collection routes that minimize both travel distance and service time under realistic operational constraints. Methods: A synthetic fill-level dataset was generated to reflect realistic seasonality, holidays, and operational conditions. Transformer, LSTM, and BidirectionalLSTM models were trained for sequence-to-sequence forecasting. Route optimization employed a multi-objective NSGA-II algorithm, with a constraint programming pre-processor (CP-SAT) to assign valid collection days based on waste type, service frequency, and vehicle capacity constraints. Comparative benchmarking was conducted against Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and a commercial PTV routing engine. Results: Transformer-based models consistently outperformed LSTM baselines in forecasting accuracy across synthetic scenarios. In routing, NSGA-II generated Pareto-optimal solutions balancing distance and service time, outperforming ACO and achieving competitive results compared to the commercial PTV solver. The combined framework demonstrated that predictive, sensor-free optimization is a viable pathway to smarter and greener waste collection systems. Conclusions: The findings confirm that sensor-free fill-level forecasting combined with evolutionary multi-objective optimization offers a scalable, cost-effective alternative for modern waste management. The modular approach allows for future integration with real-time systems and supports proactive planning strategies that reduce environmental and operational costs
YOLO for early detection and management of Tuta absoluta-induced tomato leaf diseases
The agricultural sector faces persistent threats from plant diseases and pests, with Tuta absoluta posing a severe risk to tomato farming by causing up to 100% crop loss. Timely pest detection is essential for effective intervention, yet traditional methods remain labor-intensive and inefficient. Recent advancements in deep learning offer promising solutions, with YOLOv8 emerging as a leading real-time detection model due to its speed and accuracy, outperforming previous models in on-field deployment. This study focuses on the early detection of Tuta absoluta-induced tomato leaf diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. The first major contribution is the annotation of a dataset (TomatoEbola), which consists of 326 images and 784 annotations collected from three different farms and is now publicly available. The second key contribution is the proposal of a transfer learning-based approach to evaluate YOLOv8’s performance in detecting Tuta absoluta. Experimental results highlight the model’s effectiveness, with a mean average precision of up to 0.737, outperforming other state-of-the-art methods that achieve less than 0.69, demonstrating its capability for real-world deployment. These findings suggest that AI-driven solutions like YOLOv8 could play a pivotal role in reducing agricultural losses and enhancing food security.
The applicability of Generative AI in Systematic Literature Reviews : Exploring GPT-4's Role in Automating and Assisting Researchers
This thesis examines the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to automate key phases of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) in Software Engineering (SE). Using qualitative interviews and a blind test, we assess the applicability, opportunities, and limitations of LLMs in research workflows. Study selection (screening) and research identification (search) emerge as the most automatable steps. Repetitive screening is ideal for automation and keyword generation shows potential. However, limitations such as restricted database access and search strategy constraints hinder full automation. Other SLR steps are less suitable for automation. LLMs can reduce human bias, assist in screening, and handle tasks such as formatting, grammar checking, and summarizing. Despite these benefits, there are concerns about LLM biases, transparency, and ethical issues concerning data privacy. Some question whether automating SLRs supports the fundamental goal of researcher learning. LLM-generated search strings are similar in quality to human-created ones but require manual adjustments for Boolean logic and formatting. Although LLMs can help, they should not replace human oversight. Cautious automation can enhance, but not replace, traditional research methods. More research is needed to refine the use of LLM in SLRs, focusing on transparency, reliability, and ethics
An Optimized Multi-Objective Task Scheduling Approach for IoT Systems in the Edge-Cloud Continuum
The Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enabled the development of innovative applications. The deployment of those applications is a complex process that should take into consideration multiple factors, including the applications' scale, complexity, distribution, and non-functional requirements (e.g., energy consumption, performance, and security). Moreover, deployment environments over the edge-cloud continuum are heterogeneous w.r.t. their processing capabilities, communication latencies, and energy consumption. Towards enabling efficient scheduling of tasks in such environments, we formulate the task scheduling problem as a multi-objective optimization task balancing energy efficiency and deadline adherence. To tackle this problem, we employ the Equilibrium Optimizer (EO)-a physics-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm that utilizes an equilibrium pool of top-performing solutions to guide its population toward high-quality schedules. To validate the feasibility of our approach, we run experiments where we compare our proposed approach against the multiple existing optimizers. The results demonstrate that EO exhibits a superior performance reflecting its potential to improve IoT systems' quality of service and reduce their operational costs in large-scale and time-sensitive IoT scenarios.
Towards value driven construction : Designing Product Service Systems offerings aroundsite level data
Background: The construction industry is under increasing pressure to improve productivity, minimize downtime, and optimize resource utilization. Product-Service Systems (PSS) promise to deliver these benefits by coupling physical equipment with value-adding services. Site-level data—real-time and historical metrics from machinery—lie at the heart of PSS, yet many firms struggle to convert raw telemetry into services that frontline users actually value and adopt. Objectives:This thesis examines which types of site-level data construction professionals perceive as most valuable and how those data can inform the design of PSS offerings. By focusing on the perspectives of operators, planners, mechanics, and dealer representatives, it addresses a gap in understanding how machine-generated insights translate into actionable, user-aligned services. Methods: A qualitative approach combined a structured literature review of PSS, Data-Driven Decision-Making, and Data-Driven Innovation with ten semi-structured interviews. Participants were drawn from small, medium, and large construction firms in Sweden and represented diverse roles in equipment operation and service. Interview transcripts were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to surface key data preferences, barriers, and service expectations. Results: Frontline users rated real-time metrics—fuel consumption, idle time, machine utilization, and fault alerts—as essential for immediate adjustment and preventive maintenance. Aggregated weekly and monthly trend reports were prized by planners for strategic scheduling and budgeting. Major obstacles included intermittent connectivity, siloed platforms, information overload, and non-contextual alerts. Desired service features converged on predictive-maintenance notifications, behavior-focused feedback loops, concise prioritized alerts, and customizable dashboards. Dealers emerged as indispensable intermediaries, translating analytics into context-sensitive guidance and fostering trust. Conclusions: Effective PSS in construction demands a socio-technical approach that pairs reliable infrastructure and streamlined analytics with human-centered design and relational support. Services must distill complex data into clear, role-specific recommendations, enable user customization, and be backed by on-site training and mediation by trusted advisors. These insights offer a roadmap for equipment providers to evolve from break-fix vendors into proactive partners, delivering outcome-driven services that enhance efficiency, reliability, and customer loyalty. Keywords: Product-Service Systems, site-level data, construction industry, data-driven service design, user-centered innovation.
DenseNet-FPA : Integrating DenseNet and Flower Pollination Algorithm for Breast Cancer Histopathology Image Classification
Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent and life-threatening diseases affecting women worldwide. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. While histopathological image analysis plays a key role in breast cancer diagnosis, the complexity and heterogeneity of these images present significant challenges. To address this, we propose DenseNet-FPA, a novel method that combines Dense Convolutional Networks (DenseNet) with the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) to enhance feature selection and classification in breast cancer histopathology images. DenseNet effectively extracts hierarchical features, while FPA optimizes the selection of the most discriminative features, improving classification accuracy and reducing computational overhead. We evaluated our approach on two publicly available datasets, i.e. BreakHis and BACH, achieving accuracies of 99.32% and 96%, respectively. These results signficantly outperform state-of-the-art methods, which achieved <99% on BreakHis and <93% on BACH. Our findings demonstrate significant improvements in binary classification performance, offering a more efficient and accurate approach for breast cancer diagnosis. The proposed method has potential applications in other histopathological analyses and clinical settings.
