    Una BOA per i prodotti della ricerca in Bicocca

    BOA is the Milano-Bicocca University repository carried out in the context of the SURplus project in June 2008 in order to place in archives the whole scientific production of the University. With BOA the University aims at creating a complete and inter-workable database of all its scientific publications, a database from which it is possible to feed the remaining SURplus modules, to get consultation and bibliographic citations statistics, to extract information to insert into other databases.BOA (Bicocca Open Archive) è il repository dell'Università di Milano-Bicocca per l'archiviazione della produzione scientifica di Ateneo, creato nell'ambito del progetto SURplus nel giugno 2008. Con BOA l'Università si propone di creare una banca dati omnicomprensiva e interoperabile di tutte le pubblicazioni dell'Università di Milano-Bicocca, dalla quale sia possibile alimentare gli altri moduli di SURplus, ricavare statistiche di consultazione e citazioni bibliografiche ed estrarre informazioni da caricare su altre banche dati

    Le potenzialità dell'Import UNIMARC nell'esperienza del Polo MIL

    The application SBN Unix C/S handles the feature Import UNIMARC, allowing to obtain information on the data of pole and library from a database, without conversation with SBN. In 2008, CILEA gained a remarkable expe-rience on the usage of this procedure, importing data for some libraries belonging to the MIL pole. The chances offered by the procedure and the successful imports render Import UNIMARC a useful activity both for libraries belonging to SBN and for libraries wanting to join it.L’applicativo SBN Unix C/S dispone della funzionalità Import UNIMARC che permette di acquisire sulle basi dati di polo e biblio informazioni derivanti da un data base gestito senza colloquio con SBN. Nel corso del 2008 il CILEA ha maturato una notevole esperienza sull’uso di questa procedura, eseguendo una serie di importazioni per biblioteche afferenti al polo MIL. Le possibilità offerte dalla procedura e l’esito positivo dell’importazioni effettuate rendono l’Import UNIMARC un’attività utile sia per le Biblioteche già afferenti a SBN, che per quelle che desiderino aderirvi

    SURplus Open Archive (OA): il repository istituzionale a servizio della ricerca

    OA (Open Archive) is an integrated module of the SURplus service for the creation of an institutional repository for the research output. The module, based on the open-source software ‘DSpace’, was implemented by the AePIC Team developers at CILEA to ensure compliancy with international standards and visibility requirements for publications, authors and their institutions on one hand, and the necessary flexibility to support processes at different universities or research centres on the other hand. Within the SURplus suite, the OA module provides data and metadata for further elaboration: reports, statistical analysis, research evaluation and assessment according to a variety of metrics.OA (Open Archive) è il modulo integrato del servizio SURplus che permette di creare un repository istituzionale per i prodotti della ricerca. Il modulo è stato realizzato dal team AePIC del CILEA basandosi su una personalizzazione ed evoluzione del software open source DSpace e consente da un lato la piena conformità agli standard internazionali che garantiscono ampia visibilità alle pubblicazioni, ai loro autori e alle istituzioni che li supportano, dall'altro la flessibilità necessaria all'adattamento ai processi di ciascun ateneo o ente di ricerca. Nell'ambito della suite SURplus il modulo OA fornisce tutti i dati e metadati utili alla reportistica, all'analisi statistica e alla valutazione dei prodotti della ricerca secondo varie metriche

    Many academic and industrial research teams are working towards the improvementof ultrasound techniques for medical diagnostic applications, in order to have volumetricechographic images in real time. The unique way to approach this problem isto use a matrix array transducer and to develop an echographic system able to handlethousands of electronic channels. A volumetric echographic system is a hard task !During the past decades huge advances have been made in the field of ultrasound imagingfor medical diagnostic applications. Conventional echographic probes are based,by now, on the mature piezoelectric technology. Recently, alternative technologiesbased on different operating principles have been proposed. In particular, the siliconmicromachined capacitive ultrasonic transducer technology (cMUT) has shown to besuitable for the replacement of the current technology. The main benefits of cMUT technologycan be found in the silicon micromachining process, commonly used in microelectronics.In order to have real time volumetric images a two dimensional matrixtransducer must be used; the afore mentioned cMUT technology is well suited for thistype of new transducers. Roma Tre has a program to develop this kind of transducersbut, because their geometrical characteristics are strongly dependent on the structureof the echographic system used, a preliminary exploration must be made in order todefine its principal features. This activity entails a huge amount of end-to-end simulationsof the whole process, from signal acquisition to the final image, to assess the impactof design choices on diagnostic capabilities

    Simulazione di reazioni e processi in materiali per l'hydrogen storage

    The adoption of hydrogen as fuel for automotive applications requires the developmentof effective technologies for its storage on board. The most promising materials for thisapplication are those in which hydrogen is stored in solid phase, being part of the structureof the material. This technology allows an high hydrogen density together withan high weight percentage and a low risk in case of accident.The development of the next generation of this class of materials requires a propermodelization of the chemical reactions and physical processes occurring during the releaseand uptake of hydrogen, and in particular the role played by catalysts. In fact, togetherwith an higher capacity, the next generation of solid state hydrogen storagematerials, the first expected to be used in real applications, must be able to achieve ahigher life cycle (higher number of charge-discharge cycles).Our research focused on the study of the de-hydrogenation path in one of the mostknown material: sodium alanates (NaAlH4, Na3AlH6). Combining modern methods forthe reconstruction of the free energy surface and an ab-initio calculation for the modelizationof interatomic forces (density function theory in generalized gradient approximation),we were able to demonstrate that the limiting step of the de-hydrogenationprocess in this material is the diffusion of hydrogen atoms from one defective AlH6unit to another in its nearest neighbor shell. We also shown that this process is not affectedby the catalyst. We therefore concluded that a further study of this process, focusingon the chemical reaction rather than on the diffusion process is needed tounderstand the role played by the catalyst

    Il servizio di emeroteca virtuale al CASPUR ed il suo nuovo motore di ricerca

    CASPUR has been offering since 1999 a web based Digital Library service called “Emeroteca Virtuale” (EV), which guarantees full-text permanent access to scholarly scientific publications of five commercial publishers, the biggest ones in a worldwide context. Nowadays EV is a service accessed by more than 350.000 users, mostly researchers belonging to nearly 30 middle and south Italy universities and research bodies. Users can browse and search on this platform up to 8 million full text articles from 5.000 e-journals, mainly in Scientific-Technology-Medicine (STM) area. Since 1999 EV service is based on a commercial software called Science Direct, whose main functionalities are articles browsing and articles searching. This software is going to show its limits with such huge amount of searchable articles, especially when search times are concerned. This is why starting from the second half of 2008 CASPUR staff which is managing this digital library has planned a migration from Science Direct search engine, to a new one, chosen in the context of open source software: Lucene from Apache Software Foundation. Nowadays Lucene is used in many web based applications around the world, especially in the field of scientific digital libraries. Concerning EV service, Lucene integration with Science Server environments is going to end in the next few months. Exhaustive tests have been performed using the whole contents, giving really promising results, with a mean search time 10 to 100 shorter than Science Direct search response. This definitively states the choice of Lucene as a good search engine and represent a valid starting point for “Emeroteca Virtuale” whole service renovation

    Department of Physics and CASPUR have been starting, in the past 2 years, a collaborationin order to develop a new RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) system for automaticlibrary loan procedures. These systems (generally known as self-checkequipments) uses radio signals in the UHF frequency range to interact with antennas(passive tags) used to identify books. Users identification is made through special cardswith an embedded tag. The entire loan process is completely managed by users throughprograms which run on a PC (terminal) directly attached to the reader. In our project weused an approach different from current commercial solutions, that works with RFIDreader in the range of HF. We think in fact, that this new “technology” could be verypromising in the future for the enhancements it could bring vs the “old” one (e.g. formassive inventory of library items in a “single shot”, not permitted then using HF RFIDtechnology). In this report we not only demonstrate that UHF RFID readers can be usedinside libraries as effectively as HF RFID readers (despite the latter is a more mature andstable technology), but also illustrate a solution that makes use of UHF RFID componentswhich are relative simple to maintain and to upgrade, open for systems integration,web manageable and with an Ethernet port for direct local network connection. Usersinteractions with library loan system is performed through a simple Web interface on anetwork attached terminal. A software library fully compatible with SIP2, the protocolused by library management systems for automatic loan procedures is also available forInternet community. Currently a prototype of our solution is going to be installed in twolibraries of Università “La Sapienza” of Rome for testing procedures in real environments

    L'evoluzione dell'offerta formativa del CASPUR per il calcolo scientifico e tecnico ad alte prestazioni

    Since 2005, CASPUR has been revamping its activity in the field of High PerformanceComputing (HPC) education. In the beginning, the first edition of a yearly SummerSchool on advanced topics of HPC was organized, during two weeks in the late summer,with the goal to explore subjects like code optimization and code parallelization as wellas to have scientific lectures held by well-known experts in the field. The success ofthe Summer School suggested to us to make an additional effort in education. In 2007four courses on different HPC topics were proposed. Now, having considered the successof the previous years, 11 different courses and a total of more than 15 are planned for2009. About 300 students are expected to follow the 2009 CASPUR HPC education program.For the future, we are working to make CASPUR a valuable centre for high educationon ICT, not only for the typical HPC community but also for all research, servicesand business communities, currently less familiar with HPC. To reach this goal we intendto develop new courses focused on: more technical-scientific integration; security, networkingand other general topics more appealing for the non-scientific users; communitieshaving no straight interest in HPC techniques but that could benefit from them.In addition, we intend to test and implement effective e-learning platforms to extendthe number of possible learners
