NEMO (Numerical Engine for Multiphysics Operators) is a support library designed to build applications in the field of continuum mechanics; its basic design principle is to enable an application structure that closely follows the structure of the differential equations describing the problem on hand, exploiting the availability of “objects” representing fields and equations, and the differential operators acting on them, normally assuming a finite volume discretization scheme. The library makes use of consolidated and efficient parallel computing libraries for internal subtasks, employing state of the art numerical techniques; it is also capable of interfacing with industry standard storage formats, such as CGNS and GAMBIT, and visualization tools
Interaction of metal atoms with organic thin film is a fundamental issue to optimize performancesof novel devices. The computational investigations, based on density functionaltheory, reveal that a realistic description of the reactive processes is obtained whenthe organic thin film is modelled by its crystallographic structure. In this case, the metal atoms can react with multiple organic molecules present inthe solid forming complexes where they are bound both to O atoms and to aromatic Catoms of the molecules.Calculated band gap states, induced by chemical reaction upon deposition, reproducequite well the measured density of states as a function of the metal concentration inthe solid.Simulated core level shift spectra for N(1s), O(1s), Al (2p), in doped systems, are ingood agreement with experimental spectra and the electronic structure analysis providesa microscopic description of reaction processes.Interestingly, K atoms in PTCDA solid are ionically bound to anhydride O atoms andare able to form quasi mono-dimensional chain along the stack direction of the organicmaterial

Una Biblioteca Digitale Semantica per il Comune di Milano
In the second half of 2007 the Municipality of Milan decided to co-finance a one year project, proposed by CILEA, called “Biblioteca Aperta di Milano” (Milan Open Library) or BAMI, aimed at creating an integrated system to make available on the Web a set of digitized documents from the cultural institutions of Milan. The project led to the creation of one of the first Semantic Digital Library in Italy. To meet the goals of the project, indeed, we adopted Semantic Web standards and technologies to build the knowledge base and used a faceted browser for the user interface. To store and provide the visualisation of digital documents we used two different applications: CodeX[ml] and AriannaWeb. Regarding the selection of content, we decided to focus mainly on the documents that belong to a specific branch of the city's cultural heritage: those from 19th century, giving special attention to musical documents. In this paper we present the methodology and the workflow that led us to build an ontology with the aid of a Scientific committee of librarians and 19th century music's experts. We also illustrate the building of a dedicated web-based editor that we used to populate the ontology. One of the most important objectives of the project was to overcome the limitations of the search engines traditionally used in the librarian domain by providing the users with new tools for browsing and analysing cultural knowledge. Thus the paper also focuses on the BAMI User Interface, which was built by extending and enhancing Longwell, a faceted RDF browser developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Doctoral theses often represent the upper edge of academic research activities. As such, they deserve the highest visibility and dissemination opportunities, for the benefit of their authors and the supporting institutions. Their impact would also contribute to prevent the marginalization of Italian research in the European and world-wide context. Changes in norms and rules are also driving universities towards automation of processes and adoption of digital formats. In this situation universities look for software solutions that can be integrated in their information environment, contribute to the automation of the archiving process and provide theses with high visibility on the net. CILEA fulfills these needs with the OA module of the SURplus suite, customized for the specific treatment of dissertations.
