Skip the Bankart, go Latarjet: An Analysis of the Younger, Athletic Population Experiencing Shoulder Instability
The present study investigates Latarjet shoulder procedures in the younger, athletic population, and if the incidence of shoulder stabilization procedures can be decreased when deciding which procedure will be most effective to maintain shoulder longevity and return to prior level athletic and daily performance. 332 patients (299M, 33F, mean age 25.5 +/- 3.3y) were identified who met the inclusion criteria for this study. Of the 332 patients, 355 total shoulders (320M, 35F, mean age 25.5 +/- 3.25y) were analyzed by operation note data extraction in the electronic health records system (EPIC) for Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). For each patient, sex, date of birth, calculated age at the beginning of the study, presence of a Bankart repair with or without operation notes, presence of Latarjet with or without operation notes, both Bankart and Latarjet surgery dates, the age of the patient at each procedure, the final followup date, and general complication, demographic, and associated activities were all recorded. It was discovered that males are 3x more likely to receive a Latarjet, where females are 5.9x more likely to receive other shoulder stabilization procedures. Further, females are 2.8x more likely to receive sub-optimal procedures compared to their male counterparts. 45% of the entire shoulder population exhausted more resources than what was needed by having to ultimately undergo a subsequent Latarjet procedure as a revision stabilization surgery. With the fragility of the shoulder capsule and the overwhelming presence of younger individuals competing in athletics, more research is needed to identify the risk factors involved with shoulder stabilization procedure complications and the disparity of patient healthcare between the sexes
The Tree of Life Sculpture in the Sullivan Museum and History Center
The inspiration for this research project was born in the fall of 2022 as students of Professor Judith Stallings-Ward’s Spanish 301 class read a creation myth in the Chilam Balam of Chumayel, a book in the sacred literature of the Maya, in which the Tree of Life figures as the central motif. In connection with their study of the myth, the class decided to view the Tree of Life clay sculpture belonging to the Sullivan Museum and History Center. The day of their visit to the archives, the class heard a lecture about this piece by Joseph Cates, Curator of Education and Public Programs, Sullivan Museum and History Center. The story of the creation myth, the sight of the stunning artifact here at Norwich, and Cates' lecture set in motion the research process that resulted in the present essay. After explaining how Norwich University came into possession of a Tree of Life sculpture, this essay aims to examine the origin and meaning of this cultural artifact in the context of Mesoamerican and other world cultures, so that the Norwich community and the public at large may understand and appreciate its significance.Winner of the 2023 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Research in the Advanced Undergraduate Researchers: Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) categor
An Analysis of Game-Based Learning
With claims of increased student motivation and understanding of materials, Game-Based Learning (GBL) has recently been attracting the interest of researchers. Still, there have been barriers preventing the implementation of Game-Based Learning in schools. This research aims to point out the benefits and challenges of GBL and addresses the need for more research into the effects of incorporating videogames into classroom material. Through this research, I first consulted previous works and their discoveries regarding the benefits of Game-Based Learning. Additionally, I surveyed members of the Norwich University community about their opinions on gaming and what skills they believe games can teach. This thesis also analyses how "Ocean Cleanup," a mobile app that consists of a simple gamified quiz I created, could potentially benefit students and teachers by creating a less stressful and more entertaining method of assessing students. While the goal of this research's literature review is to discuss some of the main benefits and drawbacks that previous researchers have found, the survey of current members of a university community will hopefully help establish the level of interest that students have in a gamified classroom. The analysis of Ocean Cleanup aims to prove that adding a few aspects of a game into the classroom could already be beneficial without significantly altering the traditional classroom format. Our results show that many individuals are more likely to play and interact with classroom material when it is in a game-based format
Semaglutide and Lifestyle Modifications: Effects on Comorbidities and Weight Loss in Adults with Obesity
Objective: This literature review was conducted to understand semaglutide’s impact on reducing
weight and related comorbidities of obese patients with a body mass index of 30 kg/m² or more,
along with aiding nurses in understanding how to use semaglutide in a clinical setting.
Background: Obesity is a growing concern and has increased the strain on the global healthcare
system because of the adverse effects associated with this condition. Semaglutide, as a new
obesity treatment, has grown in popularity due to its effectiveness.
Significance: It is essential to identify effective treatments for obesity to slow its rapid growth in
the global population and reduce the strain on healthcare professionals caused by related
comorbidities.
Theoretical Framework: This literature review integrates nursing theories emphasizing patientcentered
care, aligning with the comprehensive approach required in obesity management. I will
also use Orem’s self-care theory, specifically regarding chronic conditions and how semaglutide
can impact patients’ well-being and wellness outcomes.
Methods: The review of the literature focuses on semaglutide for weight loss, and 22 articles
were referred.
Results: Semaglutide showed significant results in weight reduction from the patient’s baseline
and cardiovascular health benefits.
Discussion: Semaglutide reduces weight, especially with proper intensive lifestyle modifications
and education.
Recommendations: There is a need for further research on the long-term effects of semaglutide.
Nurses play a vital role in administering and monitoring semaglutide in their patients.Second place in the 2024 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Student Research in the Advanced Undergraduate Researchers:Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) category
Opportunistic Foreign Policy: American Independence & Influence on the French Revolution
The establishment of the United States concluded in 1783, signifying a distinct change in
Western politics as enlightenment ideals pushed for emphasis on the individual rather than the
king or state. While the War ended for the Americans, the effects were felt long after and had
major implications for States such as France which supported the American cause. How did the
American Revolution influence America's strategic partner France after the war and Influence its
revolution? This paper will attempt to present primary source documents to better understand
how American revolutionary ideas spread to the shores of France and collapsed its monarchy.
The American Revolution proved monarchical governments could be overthrown. While the
French Revolution was complex it was not inevitable and could have never happened at all or
been caused because of different domestic issues. The American Revolution provided precedence
for a successful uprising against a monarchy firsthand. Due to preexisting ideas of liberty and
equality, issues in foreign policy, and anti-monarchical sentiment, the American Revolution
influenced the factors that caused the French Revolution.Second place in the 2024 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Student Research in the Advanced Undergraduate Researchers: Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Categor
The Impact of Collegiate Athletics on Mental Health
The mental health crisis has become a prominent problem within the collegiate athletic community of the United States with the loss of five collegiate athletes in less than two months in 2022. Looking to determine the effects of participation in collegiate athletics on an individual’s mental health, this study has found there to be limited differences between the mental health of collegiate athletes and students at the private Division III military college in central Vermont, Norwich University. A variety of variables impact a student athletes mental health, though an emphasis is placed on the relationships an athlete holds with their team and their coaching staff. Limited by population size, further investigation should be taking into the idea of athletic competence and the impact of being in-season. Social acceptance, in general, and in the athletic community continues to need to be de-stigmatized. The collegiate athletic
community is not immune to mental illness and should not be treated as such. This is a field that should consider a variety of continued exploration and research
Phishing: The Relationship Between Cyber Technical Experience and Susceptibility
Phishing is a prevalent form of cybercrime that involves the use of deceptive tactics to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as login credentials or financial data. Despite increased awareness of this threat, phishing attacks continue to pose a significant risk to
individuals and organizations alike. One factor that may influence susceptibility to phishing attacks is one’s level of technical experience. Some studies suggest an individual with greater technical expertise may be better equipped to identify and avoid phishing scams; others have suggested that overconfidence in one’s technical skills may lead to complacency and increased vulnerability. This thesis paper investigates the relationship between technical experience and susceptibility to email phishing attacks by actually phishing university students and using college major as a proxy for technical experience. Students in cyber-related majors were found to be less susceptible to email phishing than students in non-cyber-related majors, with the difference statistically significant at p < 0.05. Organizations can use this result as one factor to help better determine how to allocate information-assurance resources
Nursing Student Perception of Online Learning Compared to Other Undergraduate Majors
Title: Nursing Student Perception of Online Learning Compared to Other Undergraduate Majors
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare undergraduate nursing students’
perceptions of the online learning environment with the perceptions of other undergraduate
majors offered at a small, private military university. Additionally, this study explored which
variables of online learning had the most impact on students’ perception.
Methods: A quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional survey study was chosen to compare
undergraduate nursing students’ perceptions of the online learning environment with the
perceptions of other undergraduate majors. The online learning environment was measured using
a modified version of the DREEM survey.
Results: The findings were: (1) Nursing students had the fifth highest perception of online
learning; (2) there was no significant difference in perception of online learning between nursing
majors and other majors. (3) Learning and teaching had a significant impact on students’
perception of online learning. (4) Online atmosphere had a significant impact on students’
perception of online learning.
Conclusion: Teaching and learning practices, along with the online atmosphere, are key
components of the online experience for students. Aspects of teaching and learning that
contribute to a positive experience include having access to materials and assignments early,
integrating opportunities for interaction and providing frequent support and encouragement to
students. Aspects of the online atmosphere that contribute to a positive learning experience
include training on educational technology for both faculty and students, and to design
opportunities for students to learn at their own pace for better time management
Refrigeration Leaks, Maintenance and Environmental Impacts
Refrigeration leaks have a substantial environmental impact on the Earth and human health. Common refrigerants, R-410a and R-134a, commonly used in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, are considered potent greenhouse gases [1]. The demand and uses of refrigeration are rapidly increasing. Long-term prevention is required to prevent ozone depletion and climate change, but short-term prevention should always occur with proper maintenance and installation. Supermarkets are one of the most significant contributors to refrigerant leakage into the atmosphere. Refrigeration leaks also impact consumers financially.
This paper presents the refrigeration leakage rate across significant supermarkets in the UK, global warming potentials for refrigerants and greenhouse gases, and candidate replacements for alternative refrigeration. The question posed in this research paper is: what are the options for the future because of the environmental impact of refrigeration leaks depleting the ozone layer and climate change? Moreover, how will refrigeration change in the near future to minimize environmental impacts?Second place in the 2023 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Research in the Advanced Undergraduate Researchers: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) category
What Drives Split-Ticketing?
As no two candidates, even from the same party, are the same, split-ticket voting allows
voters to vote more accordingly to their beliefs in the current political climate. Split-ticket voting
is a commonly discussed, yet loosely explained concept in electoral politics, leading this research
to fill in the gaps to explain why, and who split-tickets. Through analysis of the 2022 American
National Election Survey, interpretation of strength of party identification and importance of
party identification to voters’ identity are examined to see the extent of the effect on a voter’s
likelihood to split-ticket vote. Strength of party identification shows very strong association to
vote choice by party in different electoral races, while importance of party identification is
moderately associated. Additionally, this analysis indicates Republicans split-ticket more than
Democrats, there is variation between strength of Democratic partisanship and split-ticket
likelihood, and Republicans, as a whole, find importance of party identification as less important
than Democrats.Second place in the 2024 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Student Research in the Emerging Undergraduate Researchers: Humanities, Arts, and Sciences (HASS) category
