From Criminal to Crucial Participation: The Case of Dutch Volunteer Hackers
Get PDFSince the 1980s, Dutch volunteer hackers have been identifying and disclosing vulnerabilities in computer systems. Initially criminalized, these hackers now play a crucial role in Dutch cybersecurity governance. This article explores the transformation of hackers from criminals to crucial participants and examines what this case reveals about citizen participation in the digital age. The case study demonstrates that citizens can play a pivotal role in addressing challenges posed by digitization, although their contributions can remain unrecognized and constrained by hostile institutions. This article aims to deepen the understanding of various forms of citizen participation in digital society, how institutions can support or constrain them, and how citizens play a central role in shaping these institutions to legitimize their participation

Get PDFIn der vorliegenden Studie werden die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung von Erdemli & Vall zusammengefasst, die zunächst als Arbeitspapier des Institut d'Economia de Barcelona (IEB) und später als wissenschaftlicher Artikel (2024 https://doi.org/10.1007/s13209-024-00299-1) veröffentlicht wurden. Sie analysiert die geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschiede bei den elterlichen Investitionen in mathematische Online-Lernen und den Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Unterschieden und den schulischen Leistungen der Kinder. Im Anschluss werden die Ergebnisse in die breitere Debatte über elterliche Lernunterstützung, die Nutzung digitaler Lernwerkzeuge und geschlechtsspezifische Verzerrungen beim Mathematiklernen eingeordnet, wobei insbesondere die Bedeutung von Geschlechterstereotypen hervorgehoben wird. Am Eden werden die wichtigsten Argumente zusammengefasst: Einerseits wird betont, dass die Nutzung digitaler Werkzeuge für das Lernen zu Hause soziale Ungleichheiten in der Bildung aufgrund der anhaltenden digitalen Kluft verstärken könne. Andererseits wird darauf hingewiesen, dass dies durch eine bessere Ausstattung und Anbindung von Schulen in sozial benachteiligten Stadtteilen sowie durch andere soziale Maßnahmen zur Unterstützung sozioökonomisch benachteiligter Familien abgemildert werden könnte. Angesichts des fortbestehenden Einflusses von Geschlechterstereotypen in schulischen und familiären Kontexten könnte der Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge, wie beispielsweise ernsthafter Videospiele, in schulischen und familiären Umgebungen eine gemeinsame Lernumgebung für Schulen und Familien schaffen und Räume für die Reflexion über Geschlechterstereotypen eröffnen

Coping with Poverty and Social Exclusion: Promoting Capabilities Through Long‐Term Sports Participation
Get PDFPoverty and social exclusion (PaSE) are multifaceted challenges that affect individuals across all stages of life, manifesting as financial deprivation, health inequities, and restricted access to social and economic opportunities. Sports participation offers a promising avenue to mitigate these challenges, providing access to health benefits, social connections, and life skills. This study contributes to the limited body of research on sports programmes for adults affected by PaSE by investigating how long‐term participation in a low‐threshold and diverse sports programme supports them in navigating and coping with their challenges. Drawing on Amartya Sen's capability approach (CA) as a theoretical framework, biographical‐narrative interviews were conducted with 16 adults who participated in the sports activities of a voluntary sports club (VSC) in Southern Germany for at least one year. The thematic analysis identified three key capabilities fostered through participation: the capability for better coping with daily life, the capability for group belonging and social confidence, and the capability to actively shape physical and mental changes. Crucial conversion factors - such as flexible participation options, reliable programme structures, and a supportive group culture - played a pivotal role in enabling these capabilities and achieving related functionings. By identifying the mechanisms through which the sports programme fosters inclusion and well‐being, this study provides deeper insights of how sports programmes can address the complex needs of individuals experiencing PaSE. These findings provide actionable insights for the design of inclusive and long‐term sports programmes that empower participants to achieve meaningful and self‐determined outcomes

Die Kompaktausgabe des jährlichen Datenreports enthält aktuelle Internationalisierungsindikatoren in grafisch aufbereiteter Form. Dazu gehören Kennzahlen zu internationalen Studierenden in Deutschland, Aufenthalten deutscher Studierender im Ausland, Herkunfts- und Zielländern international mobiler Studierender sowie Wissenschaftlermobilität nach und aus Deutschland. Die präsentierten Indikatoren basieren sowohl auf internationalen Daten von OECD und UNESCO und nationalen Daten des Statistischen Bundesamtes als auch auf Daten aus eigenen Umfragen unter Organisationen, die Auslandsaufenthalte fördern
