Androcentrism and Violence in Online Video Games: Perpetuation of Gender Inequality
This article aims to offer an analysis of the presence of hate speech, harassment, and cyber‐violence towards women in the interaction within massively multiplayer online video games (MMOs), an act of gender‐based violence perpetrated through new technologies in an environment generally described as androcentric. Filling a gap in the experience in Spain, a qualitative methodology was applied that allowed us to analyse the forms of harassment towards female video gamers, as well as some of the consequences of experiencing these situations for them. A systematic analysis of the discourses was carried out after five focus groups and 15 in‐depth interviews with young people between 18 and 29. Amongst the results, it is worth highlighting that, as occurs in offline reality, in MMOs gender schemas and asymmetric relationships are reproduced that perpetuate gender‐based violence. On the one hand, female gamers affirm that they suffer sexist violence in gaming environments through the use of language focused on physical appearance, hypersexualisation, and undervaluation, and are often considered intruders. On the other hand, they also report experiencing overprotective and paternalistic behaviours. Female gamers sometimes decide to leave their games, or avoid certain types of games apriori, because of toxic behaviours perpetrated by male gamers, which generates feelings of discrimination in their experiences as players, perpetuating androcentric patterns in this sort of environment. Applying a gender approach, this article will examine the social implications of these behaviours in order to propose appropriate social and educational responses

Additive and multiplicative effects of different forms of positive and negative indirect intergroup contact in predicting intergroup attitudes
Numerous studies found that different forms of positive indirect intergroup contact relate to people’s intergroup attitudes. Much less work has explored whether negative forms of indirect contact predict intergroup attitudes and even less evidence exists on the co-occurrence of direct and indirect forms of intergroup contact and, thus, the expected joint impact of a combination of interventions. We explore the additive effects of four types of indirect contact in predicting intergroup attitudes: extended contact, vicarious contact, mass-mediated contact, and virtual vicarious contact through social media. We also explore whether the effects of indirect contact are stronger when people have less direct contact. For each type, we measure positive and negative contact experiences. Data come from two studies (N1 = 785; N2 = 858) asking native Dutch respondents about indirect contact experiences with members of immigrant communities. We find that observing positive intergroup interactions in real life, on mass media, and, to a weaker extent, on social media has additive positive associations with intergroup attitudes. Positive extended contact has only an added effect in Study 1. Of the negative indirect forms of contact, only negative vicarious contact predicts outgroup attitudes. No consistent multiplicative effects appeared across the studies, suggesting that indirect contact effects are not stronger for those with less direct contact. We conclude that observing contact (vicarious contact) may be more impactful than merely knowing of it (extended contact)
Effect of Firm's Attribute on Value Relevance of Accounting Information of Quoted Manufacturing Companies in Nigeria
The objective of this study centres around a fundamental aspect of business health. It provides an empirical analysis of how various characteristics of firms influence the value relevance of accounting data among listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria, covering a timeframe from 2017 to 2023. The research sample comprises ten companies, with the firm attributes examined including size, age, leverage, and the count of institutional stakeholders. Book value serves as the indicator of value relevance in accounting information. Using panel regression analysis conducted through E-Views, the study establishes a positive correlation between firm attributes and the value relevance of accounting information. Significant findings include the positive impact of firm size on value relevance, coupled with a considerable negative influence attributed to firm age.Furthermore, while leverage's effect remains negative and statistically insignificant, the number of institutional investors emerges as a significant positive factor. The research concludes that larger firms typically enjoy higher book values, older firms face performance challenges, and institutional investors provide crucial oversight that protects other shareholder interests. The recommendations suggest that publicly listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria should aim to decrease their leverage and enhance equity financing options to alleviate the financial burdens incurred from external debt
You can't see what you don't measure! A scoping review of measurements of gender-based violence, its determinants and consequences in academia
Assessing the problem of gender-based violence in academia internationally is challenging due to a lack of empirical evidence and differences in how it is measured. The contribution of this article is to reflect on survey measurements and to propose new avenues for future quantitative measurements of gender-based violence, its determinants, and consequences in an academic context. For this purpose, we present the results of a scoping review of ten national and cross-national prevalence studies on gender-based violence. We examined the studies’ quantitative operationalisation of (1) sex and gender, (2) prevalence of gender-based violence, (3) socio-demographic determinants from an intersectional perspective, individual and contextual factors, (4) and consequences. Materials and methods: Prevalence studies were identified through a comprehensive search of electronic databases and specialised data repositories. The selection criteria included studies with a focus on gender-based violence, the use of closed-ended survey questions, i.e., in a questionnaire, the potential for applicability in different national contexts, and the specific context of higher education. Eligible sources also described the quantitative operationalisation of the survey measurements. Results: Our work critically reviews previous efforts to measure gender-based violence, its determinants, and consequences in academic contexts. The findings of our assessment show, first, that quantitative gender-related measurements tend to conflate the concepts of sex and gender, and hence their operationalisation in quantitative surveys. Second, there is a strong emphasis on sexual harassment and sexual violence to the detriment of other relevant forms of violence, as well as a rooting of measurement concepts in locally valid but diverse legal definitions of gender-based violence. Third, there is a lack of socio-demographic determinants to provide an intersectional lens, as well as a focus on measurement frameworks that individualise the experiences of gender-based violence. This prevents a conceptualisation of harassment and abuse as a structural problem in the academic sector and ignores that violence is both as a cause and a consequence of unbalanced gendered power relations and inequalities in institutional and societal contexts. Fourth, there is generally a retrospective approach to measuring the consequences of gender-based violence, which may represent a source of potential bias. We reflect on how future survey instruments could address these issues in academic environments. Discussion: Overall, our paper demonstrates how the evidence generated by different conceptualisations and operationalisations of gender-based violence in academia, as well as its determinants and consequences, shapes how we think and talk about the problem. In doing so, this article contributes to the ongoing methodological discussion on the measurement of gender-based violence and provides a rationale for improving its measurement framework in academic environments by taking a feminist-theory informed approach to collecting these data.
'Ready or not' - National identity, vote choice, and mass media: Evidence from Germany
Exploiting the increased prominence of debates on immigration, right-wing parties often frame and campaign against immigrants as a threat to national societies. Research on national identity has shown that these parties are particularly successful among voters with an ethnically charged, exclusionary conception of nation. National identity, however, tends to be rather latent and stable, while far-right voting is much more volatile. Explaining a temporal influence of national identity on political behavior, social-psychological theories argue that identities need to be activated to become behaviorally relevant. The main argument of this article is that the presence of immigration-related news in the mass media can serve as such a situational factor for thinking about the nation and thus increase its salience for electoral behavior. Combining individual-level panel data from the German Longitudinal Election Study's Short-term Campaign Panel (GLES, 2019) with a measure of media salience of immigration-related news in news articles, this study is the first to examine whether national identity can be activated for political behavior through the salience of immigration-related issues in the mass media using panel data.
