Get PDFWhile there has been renewed interest in Marx recently, we cannot simply apply his more than 170-year-old texts to today's world. Across the disciplinary boundaries of philosophy, sociology, literary and cultural studies, this volume reworks Marxist critique for the twenty-first century. Capitalism, after all, has not only taken on new shapes, but, in the age of climate and care crisis, police violence, mass incarceration and global migration, it has also found new ways of exploiting and fragmenting the global workforce. The book's key contribution is to link the embodied experiences of those fragmented workers - Marx's Black, feminist, trans and queer "others" - with the pressing challenge of creating and mobilizing a political subject under the current iteration of capitalism

Leader Effects in an Era of Negative Politics: Who Has a Negativity Bias?
Get PDFIt is well known that voters' evaluation of candidates on leadership traits influences their overall candidate assessment and vote choice (i.e., leader effects). It remains unclear, however, whether positive or negative leader trait evaluations are most influential. We argue that especially in current-day political reality - in which ideological and affective polarization are skyrocketing and the political climate is fueled with negativity, high levels of incivility, and negative campaigning - the negative leader effects outweigh the positive ones. Moreover, we expect this negativity bias in leader effects to be conditioned by partisanship and political dissatisfaction. To test these expectations, we triangulate multiple studies. First, we use data from a multi-country election survey to examine the relation between perceived leadership traits of real candidates and party preferences, providing observational evidence from the US, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. Second, focusing on the causal mechanism, we test the negativity bias in a survey experiment among American voters. Here, we manipulate how leadership traits (competence, leadership, integrity, empathy) of a fictitious candidate are presented in terms of valence (positive, negative), and test the impact of these cues on voters' candidate evaluations and vote choices. The findings indicate, as predicted, that negative leader effects influence voters most strongly. Thus, the role of party leaders is mainly a push instead of a pull factor in elections. Additionally, we show that partisanship and political dissatisfaction seem relevant only for candidate evaluations, not for vote choice. This article pushes the field of candidate evaluations forward by examining the dynamics of the negativity bias in leader effects in an era of negative politics

Making Places: From Non-Place to User-Generated Space Through a Diversity of Media
Get PDFThe prevalence of rich and dynamic multimedia information has dramatically accelerated the development of communicative non-places over the last 30 years. This has prompted planners to consider the question of how the long-term shift from a place-based to a non-place-networked public realm can be achieved. This article proposes the hypothesis that users of digital infrastructure in non-places create temporary non-places. In this process, a "non-place," as intended by Augé, is neutral and lacks identity, but digital technology endows this physical non-place with new characteristics: identical, relational, and historical. By focusing on London as a case city, this article proposes a new method for observing the transformation process of urban places and non-places from location-based social media data. The research involved collecting, quantitatively, geo-targeted contributions within London during a predefined period, and an analysis of contributions on social media over time, collected from X, Foursquare, and Instagram. Daily digital activity patterns show distinctive temporal narratives in non-place-based digital spaces. The key findings from these patterns are: (a) There is a rhythmic difference between digital and physical activities in non-places; and (b) non-places accelerate the use of digital technologies as they stimulate the desire to share personal status through social media. The study aims to understand what placemaking practices occur in spaces overlayed by invisible infrastructures, as well as users' self-generated spatio-temporal perceptions

Eine Stichwahl am 1. Juni scheint so gut wie sicher. Mit Rafał Trzaskowski und Karol Nawrocki stehen sich die Vertreter der beiden größten Parteien - Bürgerkoalition (Koalicja Obywatelska - KO) und Recht und Gerechtigkeit (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość - PiS) - gegenüber. Die übrigen Kandidaten haben keine reale Chance, in die Stichwahl zu kommen, allerdings wird das Endergebnis von deren Wählerschaft beeinflusst werden. Die amtierende Regierung braucht dringend einen Sieg des eigenen Kandidaten, um wichtige Reformen durchzusetzen, die der amtierende Staatspräsident Andrzej Duda blockiert. Gleichzeitig droht die Wahl zu einer Abstimmung über die aktuelle (eher fade) Regierungspolitik zu werden
An der Peripherie von Staat und Erinnerung: Historische Denkmäler, ambivalente Geschichte und Turkmenistans gefährdetes Kulturerbe
Get PDFIn Außendarstellungen wird Turkmenistans touristisches Potenzial meist auf einige Naturschauplätze und in der Regel archäologische Weltkulturerbestätten beschränkt. Dabei wird das reiche materielle Kulturerbe der jüngeren und jüngsten Geschichte des Landes übersehen. Der Beitrag unternimmt die Darstellung einer historischen Geographie Turkmenistans, in der sich politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen während der letzten zwei Jahrhunderte manifestieren. Dabei sind historische Denkmäler und andere materielle Hinterlassenschaften Teil eines staatlichen Diskurses über Stellenwert und Bedeutung des russisch-kolonialen und sowjetischen Erbes im unabhängigen Turkmenistan. Südliche Grenzorte wie Serhetabat oder der Watutin-Friedhof in Aschgabat illustrieren das ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen lokalem Gedenken an konkrete Ereignisse oder Personen und abstrakter nationalstaatlicher Geschichtspolitik. Der Erhalt von Stätten ist durch staatliche Vernachlässigung der Denkmalpflege gefährdet, was dem bisher ungenutzten touristischen Potenzial schadet, das diesem Teil des turkmenischen Kulturerbes innewohnt
