The Emotional Dimension of the Catalan Independentist Referendum in 2017
In this article, we examined the emotional regime emerging in Catalonia as a result of the 1st of October 2017 independence referendum and determined the effect of emotions and cleavages, among others, on the decision to vote in this referendum. The emotional regime, which involves the articulation of normative emotions and dominant practices in political mobilisation, is interrelated with affective polarisation. Indeed, for this phenomenon to occur the presence of positive emotions towards the ingroup and negative emotions towards the outgroup is necessary. In Catalonia, the formation of both groups - pro-independence and non-independence - is the result of the evolution of the Catalan nationalist cleavage. We used four surveys carried out by the Equipo de Investigaciones Políticas of the University of Santiago de Compostela (EIP-USC) and advanced statistical techniques. Our analysis reveals that, after the referendum, there was an increase in positive emotional presence towards pro-independence actors, which decreased as the Catalan independence process - the procés -progressed. We have found that, although the variable with the greatest effect in voting decision at the referendum was party identification, emotions towards leaders and parties and the Catalan nationalist cleavage greatly influenced this decision
Unveiling Studentification: Reshaping Urban Landscapes and Cultural Identities in Peri-urban Regions
The peri-urban landscape has undergone significant transformations
attributed to the emergence and expansion of higher education institutions,
commonly referred to as studentification. This phenomenon, characterised by a
substantial influx of students, has notably reshaped the urban fabric. This study
aims to determine the chronology of the studentification and to identify the
primary variables influencing this transformative phenomenon, focusing specifically on the northern region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Employing a descriptive
qualitative approach, inclusive of spatio-temporal analysis, in-depth interviews,
and field observations, this research scrutinises the physical, socio-economic,
and sociocultural variables of the region. The findings reveal that studentification has redefined the regional development orientation of Yogyakarta, with
emerging cultural influences and increased investment playing pivotal roles. The
implications of these findings extend to educational planning policies, underscoring the necessity of integrating both cultural and economic considerations
into urban planning endeavours, particularly concerning the impact of studentification on peri-urban areas and the preservation of urban heritage
Territorial identity - a dynamic process and vector of local and regional development: Case study: Bukovina (Romania)
Bukovina's identity is a complex construction that reflects the historical, cultural and social influences which marked the region over time; and they are often summarised in its period of flourishing when Bukovina belonged to the Habsburg and then to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The present study used data collected through an online survey and it aims to highlight aspects of Bukovina's identity based on the perceptions of the population living in the southern part of the former province of Bukovina, as well as of the inhabitants outside Bukovina area. The results of the research revealed that the strongest identity is that of belonging to a clearly defined administrative-territorial unit - Suceava County (north of Romania). However, the territorial self-identification as Bukovinian was mentioned by a significant proportion of respondents, as very little different from those who self-identified themselves as Sucevians. Among the elements on which the perceived Bukovinian identity is based, we explored: self-identification; differentiation from the Moldavians; the way of relating to the authorities and traditions; sharing common values. The territorial component was less important in shaping a Bukovinian identity, which could be a result of the transformation of this real identity by the local authorities into a regional brand for a territory with blurred boundaries
The article presents a comparative analysis of the scientific evaluation systems operating in Poland and the Czech Republic. Poland has introduced a system of evaluation based on two main criteria: on the one hand, the number of scientific publications, and on the other hand, their quality, the amount of research funding obtained, and the assessment of the impact of scientific activity on society. In contrast, the Czech Republic has implemented an expert-based evaluation system with five criteria: contribution to knowledge, research efficiency, societal relevance, and the quality of management, strategy, and policy of scientific entities. The research hypothesis posits that the scientific evaluation systems under comparison differ both in their structure and in the comprehensiveness of theiroperational methods. The study therefore aims to identify similarities as well as significant differences in the structure and functioning of these systems. The article identifies the main differences between the systems, highlighting that the Czech system is more comprehensive due to the greater number of evaluation criteria and the use of expert evaluation. The analysis provides a fuller understanding of the mechanisms of scientific evaluation in both countries and identifies potential areas for further improvement
Eurovision and the City: "United by Music" Meets "Malmö against Genocide"
"United by Music" was the slogan of the 2024 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmö. However, the festive spirit of the event oddly contrasted with what was described as "the largest police operation in Sweden's history" (Ivarsson, 2024). This operation was mobilized in response to the expected civil protests regarding Eurovision's decision to welcome Israel's participation, despite its ongoing genocidal war on Gaza. We examine the temporary disruptions in Malmö’s urban space during Eurovision to understand the dissonance between a peaceful pro‐Palestine movement, a supposedly festive event, and the heightened securitization of the city with its alarmist tones. We aim to understand these contrasts within a broader temporal context and across different geographical scales. We argue that the distinct racialized characterizations of neoliberal authoritarian practices in Malmö during Eurovision are deeply enmeshed with the implications of the Western narratives about Israel and Palestine, the growing influence of the far‐right in Swedish politics, and, ultimately, the identity Malmö aspires to and is perceived to have. Rather than being a local manifestation of isolated authoritarian practices, Eurovision in Malmö opens a conceptual space to explore authoritarianism as a multiscalar discourse and practice. This perspective allows us to move beyond the dichotomy of the "democratic West" versus the "authoritarian others" by revealing the persistence of authoritarian practices in democracies
The EU's FIMI Turn: How the European Union External Action Service Reframed the Disinformation Fight
This article critically examines the strategic decision of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) to reframe the concept of misinformation as Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference. The EEAS, particularly its Strategic Communications Division, has been at the forefront of combating disinformation within the EU. Initially mandated by the European Council in 2015 to counter Russian disinformation campaigns, the EEAS pioneered the framing of this complex phenomenon as an external threat, significantly shaping subsequent European perceptions and policies. While the Covid-19 pandemic and the surge of accompanying disinformation originally shifted the EU focus towards a more regulatory approach, culminating in the approval of the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine soon after prompted a return to geopolitical considerations, reinstating both the disinformation-as-external-threat dimension and, therefore, the prominent role of the EEAS. This research argues that the EEAS, which recognizes the limitations of the EU in effectively countering the phenomenon of misinformation, adopted the framing of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference to both make the problem more manageable and align it with its mandate. Through this reframing, the EEAS has addressed disinformation similarly to traditional security threats, such as cyberattacks, thereby aligning with existing security paradigms and the competencies and limitations granted by the EU
