Digital Archive from Archaeological Excavations at St James's Gardens Burial Grounds, Euston, Camden, Greater London, 2018-2022 (HS2 Phase One)
No full textThis collection comprises site data (photographs, sketches and registers), photographs of registered finds, photogrammetric survey images, reports, a CAD site drawing, and spreadsheets of secondary site records and specialist data from excavations St James's Gardens Burial Grounds, London. Work was undertaken by MOLA Headland Infrastructure between 2018 and 2021 and forms part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.
The site was used as a burial ground by the parish of St James's Piccadilly between 1789 and 1853, and burial records indicate that during this time it was used for the interment of over 58,000 individuals. Finds associated with burials from the site represent a highly significant assemblage for the study of post-medieval burial practice and material culture. The 4,255 coffin fittings recovered from the site form the largest collection of post-medieval coffin furniture excavated in the UK.
This archive relates to the excavation and watching brief phase of the project, which was undertaken between January 2018 and June 2021, with post-excavation reporting completed in December 2022. Previous phases of work included geophysical survey, volunteer gravestone recording, and heritage setting of Christie Monument and Baron Southampton Obelisk. No full textThis collection contains text documents, images, vector graphics (CAD), and site records from an archaeological evaluation undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust on land opposite St Margaret's Church, Maldon Road, Woodham Mortimer, Essex in September 2023. The evaluation, comprising twenty trial trenches, was carried out ahead of the proposed construction of a new crematorium. Although the site lies on the southwestern fringe of the historic town of Maldon, only three archaeological features were recorded: a medieval or post-medieval ditch, an undated post-hole, and a pit containing sherds of possible Late Bronze Age pottery. The latter feature represents the first evidence of prehistoric activity in the area and may indicate the presence of a previously unknown prehistoric settlement

The works, as part of the Defence of Britain Project and Defence Areas Project, were carried out by Oxford Archaeology in June and July 2013. This assessment identified 18 structures, within this nationally significant defence area above Ewshot, including Type-24 pillboxes and four Vickers gun emplacements situated around two hilltop positions

Work was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in May 2019. Three post-medieval pits were uncovered, as well as Roman material including a 1st-century brooch and a possible nummus, as well as a small amount of building material which suggests that the remains of a Roman building lie nearby

No full textThis collection contains text documents and images from a descriptive building recording carried out by The Archaeology Co. at Beech Grove Farm, Malley Lane, Cuddy Hill, Woodplumpton, Preston, Lancashire, on 16 August 2024. Floor plans and a representative cross-section were produced on site using AutoCAD, with measurements taken by hand tapes (5m and 50m) and distometers as appropriate. The drawn record illustrates all features of interest recorded photographically, as well as other historically significant elements necessary to place them in context. The building appears to have been constructed in the early to mid-19th century as a double-pile house, extended shortly afterward to the west with the addition of a porch and stairwell. The barn was added by 1895, and Building S (constructed as a shippon) was in place before 1955. The remaining Buildings E and F, along with the eastern extension, were added by 1962.</p

No full textThis collection consists of site images, GIS data, and a database and spreadsheet from an archaeological excavation at Cheltenham Secondary School, Farm Lane, Leckhampton, Gloucestershire. Works were conducted by Cotswold Archaeology between September 2020 and March 2021 in advance of the construction of the new secondary school. The excavation found evidence of three main periods of predominantly agricultural activity. The first two (Later prehistoric/Middle to Late Iron Age and Late Iron Age to Early Roman) were represented by a sequence of field and enclosure ditches and a small number of pits, though there was no evidence for any buildings

Geological deposits, the post-medieval Urlay Nook Farm and modern deposits/services were encountered. Most of the post-medieval farm had been truncated however remains of a metalled surface, a brick/concrete wall and the northern part of a gin-gang (horse-engine house) were uncovered
