Digital Archive from an Archaeological Watching Brief at Straw Cottage, Main Street, Todenham, Gloucestershire, March and November 2021

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological watching brief at the site of Straw Cottage, Main Street, Todenham, Gloucestershire. Work was carried out by Worcestershire Archaeology in March and November 2021, in advance of development for a proposed residential dwelling, the site being to the north-east and east of the church of St Thomas a Becket. Six trenches were monitored, revealing a number of ditches of Late Iron Age to Roman date. It was not possible to discern much in the way of form or function, but demonstrate exploitation of the landscape during this period. The pottery assemblage was small and generally undiagnostic, but the sherds were well-preserved, indicating that they had not moved much since their original deposition. It is considered likely that the features were of agricultural function, somewhat removed from any settlement and part of a wider farming landscape. The Fosse Way lies 1.5 miles to the west and though evidence for a Roman presence in the immediate vicinity is low, this is conjectured to be due to a lack of opportunity for investigation rather than an absence of activity

This collection comprises image, text, spreadsheet and GIS data from an Archaeological Evaluation at Beacon Fen Energy Park, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The work was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in September 2024. A total of 26 trial trenches were excavated on part of the access route to the site and a total of 17 of the 28 excavated trial trenches contained archaeological features and deposits (61 percent), with their distribution indicating archaeological remains are present throughout much of the evaluated area barring an outlying land parcel that was also trenched. The uncovered features comprise 22 ditches, four gullies, three furrows, two pits, and a pit or ditch terminal. Most of these formed part of an enclosed farmstead and associated field system of mid-late Romano-British date, although some would have formed elements within the post-medieval and modern landscape
