“Kneeling only goes to highlight your ignorance. England is NOT! a #racist country”: Aversive racism, colour-blindness, and racist temporalities in discussions of football online.
Drawing on theories of aversive racism and colour-blindness, which stress the invisibility of contemporary racism, this article analyses online discussions on taking the knee (TTK) during EURO2020 men’s football tournament. While highly visible racist abuse directed at Black English players after losing the final to Italy (dominative racism) received most public attention and repudiation, based on 6,850 English language tweets published on Twitter/X, this article shows how subtle racism and colour-blindness were reinforced in discussions around TTK over the duration of the tournament (aversive racism). The article also shows how individuals online developed a variety of strategies (evidence, othering, critique, and activism) to challenge the main arguments against anti-racist activism in football (identified in four themes: BLM, Marxism, virtue signalling, and woke). The article makes an original contribution by examining the changing intensity of online conversations on TTK over the duration of the tournament. Our analysis identifies key moments in the tournament, political elites’ rhetoric, and trends of success and failure as relevant factors that shaped vernacular conversations online. The discussion ultimately argues that investigating the temporal patterns of public discussions on (anti)racism provides valuable insights to understand the contemporary complexity of racism in football and society more broadly
Efficient Data Processing Pipeline for Event-Based Vision Datasets: Techniques and Insights
Event-based vision datasets have emerged as a critical asset in advancing the capabilities of real-time perception systems, particularly in fields such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and human-computer interaction. These datasets enable low-latency processing by capturing asynchronous, pixel-level changes in the scene, providing a distinct advantage over traditional frame-based systems. However, the diverse formats and characteristics of event-based datasets pose significant challenges for efficient processing and analysis, hindering their broader adoption and integration. In this paper, we present a versatile and comprehensive data processing pipeline designed to address these challenges by supporting multiple event-data formats, including newer formats such as EVT2 and EVT3. This pipeline not only converts data into widely supported formats like AEDAT and NPZ, but also ensures that the unique characteristics of event-based data—such as temporal precision and sparse event representation—are preserved throughout the conversion process. By applying this pipeline to several open-source datasets, we establish a standardized, efficient methodology for dataset manipulation that enhances compatibility and reproducibility in event-based vision research. Additionally, we introduce a novel high-resolution event-based action dataset, converted into various formats using our pipeline, which opens new avenues for exploring event-based techniques in action recognition. This dataset and our pipeline serve as valuable resources for the research community, enabling advancements in real-time vision applications and fostering greater collaboration and standardization across studies
The Equator Project Research School and Mentoring Network: Evaluated Interventions to Improve Equity in Geoscience Research
There is a well-documented racial and ethnic diversity crisis in Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES) subjects in the Global North that leads to inequities in who does environmental research. The Equator project set out to increase participation and retention of UK-domiciled Black, Asian and minority ethnic students in GEES research by developing evidence-based, ring-fenced, fully remunerated interventions. These interventions were co-created with and informed by the voices of students and professionals within the GEES community, following a Theory of Change-based, action research approach. The Equator Research School brought together 30 Black, Asian and minority ethnic students in GEES, and 12 academics, professionals and mentors, from across the UK for a 5-day residential workshop in April 2022. The Research School was designed to facilitate network-building, improve awareness of research careers, enhance confidence in continuing in research, and strengthen a sense of belonging in GEES research for participants. The Equator Mentoring Network, which took place from January to May 2022, facilitated networking between 10 Black, Asian and minority ethnic student mentees and 20 academic and industry mentors involved in GEES subject areas. The overall goal of the Mentoring Network was to increase retention of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students into postgraduate research and to improve their overall experience. Evaluation of these interventions took the form of surveys to capture thoughts and reflections before, during and after interventions. Participants in both interventions provided very positive feedback; the majority of those involved felt a stronger sense of belonging and inclusion in GEES research and were more likely to consider a research career after taking part. The evaluation process showed unequivocally that the ring-fenced, discipline-specific, fully funded nature of the interventions was a critical factor in participant involvement. The work led to the development of recommendations for creating successful interventions for improving participation and retention in research, as well as templates for future, related EDI activities

Oral but Not Topical Sodium Bicarbonate Improves Repeated Sprint Performance During Simulated Soccer Match Play Exercise in Collegiate Athletes
This study investigated the effect of oral and topical sodium bicarbonate (SB) on soccer-specific performance during simulated soccer exercise. In a block randomized, double-blind, crossover design, 10 collegiate male soccer players (stature: 181.7 ± 3.2 cm, body mass: 81.7 ± 10.5 kg) performed soccer-specific performance tests (countermovement jumps, Illinois agility, 8 × 25 m repeated sprints) throughout a 90-min soccer-specific aerobic field test (SAFT90) following 0.3 g/kg body mass SB in capsules (SB-ORAL), 0.9036 g/kg body mass PR Lotion (SB-LOTION), or placebo capsules and lotion (PLA). Soccer-specific performance tests were conducted pre-SAFT90, during half-time and post-SAFT90. Blood samples were analyzed for acid-base balance (pH; bicarbonate, HCO3-) and strong ions (sodium, Na+; potassium, K+). Average sprint times were quicker for SB-ORAL than PLA during half-time (3.7%; p = .049; g = .57) and post-SAFT90 (4.9%; p = .041; g = .66). SB-ORAL increased pH and HCO3- prewarm-up and during half-time (p < .05), and lowered K+ during half-time (p = .035) compared with PLA. SB-LOTION increased pH (p = .019) and lowered K+ (p = .012) during half-time compared with PLA. SB-LOTION increased Na+ postexercise compared with PLA (p = .008). Repeated sprint times during simulated soccer exercise improved for SB-ORAL, which might have been mechanistically underpinned by elevated blood buffering capacity and greater regulation of strong ion concentration. Consuming SB in capsules is a more effective strategy than topical SB application for improving blood buffering capacity and repeated sprint performance throughout competitive soccer matches
Research mobilities in primary literacy education : Interrogating how teachers encounter research in an age of evidence-based teaching
This book delves into the intriguing question of why certain types of literacy research gain more traction than others in educational settings, irrespective of the quality of the research or the efforts of the researchers. It draws upon findings from Research Mobilities in Primary Literacy Education, an innovative and interdisciplinary study conducted in England and supported by the Economic and Social Research Council [ES/W000571/1]. The study investigated the types of literacy research that reach teachers, the ways in which human and non-human actors mobilise research, and the transformation of research as it circulates. The book argues that, for teachers to foster genuinely inclusive literacy classrooms, they need to be equipped to draw on understandings associated with a variety of theoretical perspectives and research traditions. Support of Migrant Reception, Integration, and Social Inclusion by Intelligent Technologies
Apart from being an economic struggle, migration is first of all a societal challenge; most migrants come from different cultural and social contexts, do not speak the language of the host country, and are not familiar with its societal, administrative, and labour market infrastructure. This leaves them in need of dedicated personal assistance during their reception and integration. However, due to the continuously high number of people in need of attendance, public administrations and non-governmental organizations are often overstrained by this task. The objective of the Welcome Platform is to address the most pressing needs of migrants. The Platform incorporates advanced Embodied Conversational Agent and Virtual Reality technologies to support migrants in the context of reception, integration, and social inclusion in the host country. It has been successfully evaluated in trials with migrants in three European countries in view of potentially deviating needs at the municipal, regional, and national levels, respectively: the City of Hamm in Germany, Catalonia in Spain, and Greece. The results show that intelligent technologies can be a valuable supplementary tool for reducing the workload of personnel involved in migrant reception, integration, and inclusion
