‘Six of one’: conflict vs control in the policing of intimate partner violence
Challenging the historical attitude that intimate partner violence (IPV) is not police business has been identified as key to effective police response. This attitude draws on the wider cultural assumption that IPV is situational and based on interpersonal conflict – a belief compounded by media coverage and certain theoretical approaches. The coercive control model counters this view, framing the majority of IPV as a power differential established through a deliberate pattern of threat and control. Coercive and controlling behaviour (CCB) was criminalised in England and Wales in the Serious Crime Act 2015. The offence describes a pattern of behaviour – rather than the discrete incidents – and subverts ingrained beliefs about the causes of IPV. This qualitative research draws on in-depth interviews with officers and victim-survivors in a force in the north of England. Critical discourse analysis examines police attitudes and culture as embedded within the wider context. A key finding is that police response officers commonly approach IPV as situational and arising from mutual conflict rather than investigating for evidence of CCB. The lack of nuanced understanding of control mechanisms and their effects often leads to exasperation with repeat callers and failure to ‘dig deeper’. However, officers who recognise the subtleties of CCB contribute to an empowering effect on victim-survivors, an outcome not formally recognised by policing processes. To equip officers for effective and supportive response, officer development should address the embedded assumption of conflict and focus on CCB as underlying the majority of IPV rather than existing as a distinct offence
Battle of Water Demand Forecasting: An Optimized Deep Learning Model †
Ensuring a steady supply of drinking water is crucial for communities, but predicting how much water will be needed is challenging because of uncertainties. As a part of Battle of Water Demand Forecasting (BWDF), this study delves into the application of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for water demand forecasting in a city situated in the northeast of Italy. The focus is on forecasting the demand across ten distinct District Metering Areas (DMAs) over four distinct stages. To enhance the performance of the LSTM model, an evolutionary optimization algorithm is integrated, aiming to fine-tune the model’s hyper-parameters effectively. Results indicate the promising potential of this approach for short-term demand forecasting
Navigating Challenges in Online Cybersecurity Education: Insights from Postgraduate Students and Prospects for a Standardized Framework
This study focuses on the challenges encountered in online cybersecurity education. It adopts an exploratory research design using a mixed-methods approach to investigate the perceptions and experiences of postgraduate students enrolled in an online cybersecurity program. The collection of data is structured into two distinct phases. In the initial phase, qualitative insights are gathered through workshops with students and industry experts, followed by administering a questionnaire to delve deeper into students’ perceptions and challenges. Thematic analysis of the responses reveals significant interest in online cybersecurity programs but also highlights issues such as ineffective communication and poor engagement. The findings highlight the necessity for a standardized framework to improve communication, engagement, and overall effectiveness in virtual learning environments. By empowering instructors to design more interactive courses and leveraging technology efficiently, the framework aims to improve student motivation, satisfaction, and learning outcomes. Moreover, it serves as a valuable resource for institutions, fostering collaboration and innovation in cybersecurity education. Implementing this framework will create a more conducive learning environment, directly enhancing student preparation for success in the dynamic field of cybersecurity
A local evaluation of the non-surgical oncology advanced practice curriculum framework
Background: In the non-surgical oncology specialism, there are a number of healthcare professionals with unique knowledge, skills and attributes that have the potential to build on this foundation and have a positive impact on patient care and outcomes. The use of the wider healthcare workforce to support clinical services has been identified as a partial solution to the UK's projected shortfall of clinical and medical oncologists, and also provides opportunities for development of experienced healthcare professionals. In order to standardise education and training, promoting patient and practitioner safety, a speciality training framework is required. Aims: This article aims to assess the relevance of the curriculum framework for advanced practitioners in non-surgical oncology and to examine its associated implementation issues in Northern England. Methods: A qualitative study examined the perspectives of professionals currently working with, training, or working as advanced practitioners (APs) around the non-surgical oncology advanced practice (NSOAP) curriculum framework. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with 14 participants. Data were then analysed and themes were extracted. Results and discussion: Four overarching themes emerged: AP role description; the curriculum framework; barriers to the AP role; and enablers to the AP role. Conclusion: Overall, the NSOAP curriculum framework was welcomed by the participants as a required structured programme of education and training. The data highlighted some areas for further development around systemic anti-cancer therapies and onco-geriatrics. The wider implementation considerations also informed future dissemination plans for the NSOAP curriculum framework
Towards a ‘Newer Normal’? A Bibliometric Analysis Examining Organisational Culture in the Post-COVID-19 Higher Education Landscape in the United Kingdom.
Concern continues to grow over the changing nature of work that initially formed a 'new normal' within higher education institutions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation is now being further impacted by subsequent economic and political challenges in the sector, which in turn shifts the workplace towards an even 'newer normal'. The purpose of this article is to: (1) methodically and logically review the extant literature and research linking the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic to the organisational culture of higher education institutions in the United Kingdom; and (2) based on a bibliometric analysis, to offer a road map for further empirical research in the future. Researchers have found that changing workplace norms, such as remote and hybrid working and other forms of flexibility in approaches to learning and the availability of delivery modes, have become increasingly common, which has changed the nature of working practices and underpinning aspects of organisational culture. Therefore, it now appears opportune to update existing knowledge on organisational culture theory within the United Kingdom higher education context to support policy development and enhance workplace practices in the post-COVID-19 period. From a theoretical perspective, this article contributes to organisational culture literature by assimilating a dataset of nascent studies generated through keyword search on Clarivate Analytics Web of Science that have examined the impact of COVID-19 on organisational culture in United Kingdom higher education institutions. This emergent dataset was analysed using VOS Viewer, with the results of subsequent quantitative bibliometric analysis identifying the main existing research fronts as well as potential research directions for the empirical development of organisational culture. Based on this bibliometric analysis, the main suggested future research agendas that need to be addressed linked to organisational culture in the UK higher education sector in the post-COVID period are: (a) to further examine changing cultural norms and expectations; (b) hybrid approaches to working; (c) academic identity; and (d) organisational culture and the changing psychological contract. Such research is important as the UK Higher Education sector now progresses towards an even 'newer normal'
Running Gait Complexity During an Overground, Mass-Participation Five-Kilometre Run
Human locomotion contains innate variability which may provide health insights. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) has been used to quantify the temporal structure of variability for treadmill running, although it has been less commonly applied to uncontrolled overground running. This study aimed to determine how running gait complexity changes in response to gradient and elapsed exercise duration during uncontrolled overground running. Sixty-eight participants completed an overground, mass-participation five-kilometre run (a parkrun). Stride times were recorded using an inertial measurement unit mounted on the distal shank. Data were divided into four consecutive intervals (uphill lap 1, downhill lap 1, uphill lap 2, downhill lap 2). The magnitude (SD) and structure (DFA) of stride time variability were compared across elapsed exercise duration and gradient using a repeated-measures ANOVA. Participants maintained consistent stride times throughout the run. Stride time DFA-α displayed a moderate decrease (d = |0.39| ± 0.13) during downhill running compared to uphill running. DFA-α did not change in response to elapsed exercise duration, although a greater stride time SD was found during the first section of lap 1 (d = |0.30| ± 0.12). These findings suggest that inter- and intra-run changes in gait complexity should be interpreted in the context of course elevation profiles before conclusions on human health are drawn
Cefiderocol for treating severe aerobic Gram-negative bacterial infections: technology evaluation to inform a novel subscription-style payment model.
BackgroundTo limit the use of antimicrobials without disincentivising the development of novel antimicrobials, there is interest in establishing innovative models that fund antimicrobials based on an evaluation of their value as opposed to the volumes used. The aim of this project was to evaluate the population-level health benefit of cefiderocol in the NHS in England, for the treatment of severe aerobic Gram-negative bacterial infections when used within its licensed indications. The results were used to inform the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance in support of commercial discussions regarding contract value between the manufacturer and NHS England.MethodsThe health benefit of cefiderocol was first derived for a series of high-value clinical scenarios. These represented uses that were expected to have a significant impact on patients' mortality risks and health-related quality of life. The clinical effectiveness of cefiderocol relative to its comparators was estimated by synthesising evidence on susceptibility of the pathogens of interest to the antimicrobials in a network meta-analysis. Patient-level costs and health outcomes of cefiderocol under various usage scenarios compared with alternative management strategies were quantified using decision modelling. Results were reported as incremental net health effects expressed in quality-adjusted life-years, which were scaled to 20-year population values using infection number forecasts based on data from Public Health England. The outcomes estimated for the high-value clinical scenarios were extrapolated to other expected uses for cefiderocol.ResultsAmong Enterobacterales isolates with the metallo-beta-lactamase resistance mechanism, the base-case network meta-analysis found that cefiderocol was associated with a lower susceptibility relative to colistin (odds ratio 0.32, 95% credible intervals 0.04 to 2.47), but the result was not statistically significant. The other treatments were also associated with lower susceptibility than colistin, but the results were not statistically significant. In the metallo-beta-lactamase Pseudomonas aeruginosa base-case network meta-analysis, cefiderocol was associated with a lower susceptibility relative to colistin (odds ratio 0.44, 95% credible intervals 0.03 to 3.94), but the result was not statistically significant. The other treatments were associated with no susceptibility. In the base case, patient-level benefit of cefiderocol was between 0.02 and 0.15 quality-adjusted life-years, depending on the site of infection, the pathogen and the usage scenario. There was a high degree of uncertainty surrounding the benefits of cefiderocol across all subgroups. There was substantial uncertainty in the number of infections that are suitable for treatment with cefiderocol, so population-level results are presented for a range of scenarios for the current infection numbers, the expected increases in infections over time and rates of emergence of resistance. The Global Disappearance of Decent Work? Precarity, Exploitation, and Work‐Based Harms in the Neoliberal Era
This thematic issue offers an international perspective on precarious work and the social harms generated by such work. In the following introduction, we contextualise these trends in relation to entrenched neoliberal policy, rising contractual insecurity, the proliferation of borders, and other forms of institutional discrimination and inequality. We distinguish between formal contractual insecurity and the subjective experiences of precarity, interrogate the types of harms that accompany precarious work, and set out a social justice perspective for an engaged critique of precarious work. The collection is truly global in its scope, encompassing case studies from Bangladesh, China, Czechia, Ecuador, Finland, Italy, India, Jordan, Latvia, and Spain. These case studies draw out the diverse contexts for rising precarity, ranging from post‐soviet, post‐socialist, and neoliberal transitions to post‐colonial and neocolonial contexts, examining how precarity is shaped by and interacts with divisions of ethnicity, migration status, gender, sexuality, and class. The way in which the play represents the tensions between inside and outside is however particularly provocative. This essay explores how Titus Andronicus disturbs and undermines the distinction between inside and outside through its use of stage space, its evocation of early modern ideas about Roman architecture, and its deployment of coded reminders of the effects of the English Reformation
