Is Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid the Antidote to the Predatory Journal Problem?
Academic capitalism has encouraged the development of pay-to-publish journals, and may have also encouraged the proliferation of poor-quality profit motivated predatory journals. Predatory journals undermine the confidence that people have in scientific research, and have created an ethical crisis. Alternatives to capitalist ideologies can reveal how an anti-capitalist intervention to the predatory journal problem might be developed. A response to the predatory journal problem might be developed using a collaborative behaviour referred to as mutual aid. Mutual aid is an organisational component of the anarchist communism proposed by Russian dissident, geographer, zoologist, and anarchist Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin. Networks of non-commercial not-for-profit online open access publishing houses and journals could be developed by faculty in higher education institutions using a mutual aid strategy. It is entirely possible that a gradual and sustained increase in (anti-capitalist) online open access journals would result in a gradual and sustained decrease in (capitalist) predatory journals
Assessing the relationship between pre- and post-game interpersonal emotions in women’s soccer teams.
Researchers have identified that sport emotions are interpersonal and can be transferred between a team and its members. However, studies examining the transfer of emotions across different phases of competition are limited. Consequently, the present study examined the cross-sectional, autoregressive (stability), and cross-lagged (bidirectional) relationships between collective and group-based emotions over three consecutive soccer matches, whilst controlling for the performance outcome. Competitive female soccer players (N = 47, Mage = 20.06 years; SD = 1.67) completed a sport emotion questionnaire before and immediately after a match for three consecutive games. Players also completed a perfectionism towards teammates questionnaire one week prior to data collection at soccer matches. Bayesian dynamic structural equation modelling revealed that collective emotions were associated with group-based emotions pre-game, but this was the case only for positive emotions. In addition, perfectionism towards one’s teammates was associated with group-based emotions at pre-game assessment. Emotions experienced at pre-game assessment were relatively stable at post-game assessment. Finally, collective emotions at pre-game assessment predicted group-based emotions at post-game assessment. It would appear that while the performance outcome strongly shapes players’ group-based emotions following soccer matches, pre-game collective emotions may offer earlier indications of the likely intensity of an individual’s group-based emotional response post-game; particularly when those emotions are negative

Using nationwide data to examine the relative effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccination against omicron amongst a population with low prior rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection: A cohort study
Background: We used nationwide data to examine relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of the Comirnaty mRNA vaccine (Pfizer–BioNTech (original), hereafter Comirnaty, against the Omicron variants (BA.1 and BA.2) during 2022 in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Method: We analysed a national cohort of 3.15 million adults (18+ years) who had received at least two doses of Comirnaty by March 2022. Data sources included national administrative records of vaccination, hospitalisation, ICU admission and death. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios in recipients of three vaccine doses compared to recipients of two doses. Results: Amongst adults, three vaccine doses provided significantly greater protection against hospitalisation attributable to Covid-19 than two doses, relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) was 50 %, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) 45–55 %) at peak virus circulation. The vaccine was effective for Māori, Pacific Peoples and those aged over 50 years however, the protection given by vaccination waned throughout the study period. The booster was also significantly more effective at preventing ICU admission or death with an rVE (3 vs 2 doses) of 53 %, 95 % CI 49–55 %. It was consistent for Māori, 49 %, 95 %CI 41–56 % and Pacific Peoples 52 %, 95 % CI 41–62 %, and those aged over 50 years, 54 %, 95 % CI 51–57 %. Conclusion: The study provides important insights into relative vaccine effectiveness of the Comirnaty booster doses against Omicron variants in NZ in 2022 in an infection naive population. The findings highlight the importance of booster doses in combatting hospitalisation, ICU admission and death during the 2022 Omicron wave

Quantitative Review of Critical Plane Criteria and Stress Analysis Approaches for Multiaxial Fatigue of Welded Joints
This quantitative review evaluates the effectiveness of stress‐based critical plane criteria, specifically Findley's criterion, the approach due to Carpinteri–Spagnoli (CS), and the Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM), in assessing fatigue strength in aluminum and steel welded joints subjected to constant amplitude (CA) and variable amplitude (VA) multiaxial loading. These criteria were analyzed alongside stress analysis approaches, including nominal stress (NS), hot‐spot stress (HSS), effective notch stress (ENS), and the Theory of Critical Distances–Point Method (TCD PM). Results confirm that all criteria effectively estimate fatigue life for steel welded joints under CA loading, with MWCM combined with HSS proving most accurate. For aluminum joints, estimations showed greater conservatism and scatter, highlighting the need for further experimental data to improve accuracy. Experimentally calibrated constants significantly enhanced prediction reliability. Future research should refine these criteria for diverse aluminum grades and thicknesses, ensuring accurate estimations and robust alternatives to established codes
Deciphering the Origin of Higher Shell Coordination on Single Iron Catalysts for Resilient Modulating Persulfate Oxidation Into Singlet Oxygen Pathway
Precise manipulation of coordination structure of single‐atom sites and establishment of schematic microenvironment‐oxidation pathway relations remain significant challenges in Fenton‐like chemistry. Herein, incorporating sulfur heteroatoms into the higher coordination shell of FeN4 structure (Fe‐NSC) exhibited a volcano trend of p‐hydroxybenzoic acid oxidation, aligning with the number and positions of sulfur dopant. Specifically, higher shell S coordination with moderate electronegativity and larger atomic radii triggers long‐range electronic interactions, which provoke Fe 3d orbital splitting and spin electron rearrangement, resulting in a spin crossover with orbital states dxy2 dyz1 dxz2 dz21. As a result, the partial filling of eg and t2 g orbitals and moderate σ/π antibonding states between 3d and 2p atomic states optimized the adsorption–desorption behaviors of the key oxygenated intermediates from peroxymonosulfate activation. Thus, the optimal binding configuration weakens the Fe─O bonding and accelerates PMS dissociation to yield C‐S‐N4Fe‐O*, which subsequently couples to form 1O2 with nearly 100% selectivity. The Fe‐NSC‐functionalized membrane exhibited outstanding long‐term reusability in a continuous flow reactor which further validated practical application perspective. This study provides insight at both atomic and electronic levels for rational design of spin‐polarized catalysts and its functions in fine‐tuning oxidation pathways in environmental catalysis

From warming bodies to heating spaces: Using feminist energy justice and oral histories to unpack home heating transitions in Europe, 1945-present
Home heating transitions influence sociocultural practices and bring about structural changes in daily life. To uncover the power dynamics underpinning these transformations, this paper applies a visionary framework for feminist energy systems designed to challenge hegemonic and unsustainable energy cultures in pursuit of a more just and equitable future. Drawing on the framework's political, economic, socio-ecological, and technological dimensions, we analyse a pan-European collection of 284 oral histories, documenting individuals' memories of past heating arrangements and transitions to new heating systems, collected through the JustHeat project. The project aims to combine reflections on past experiences with visions for the future, revealing new insights into the conditions of contemporary home heating transitions.
The research, conducted across Sweden, Finland, Romania, and the UK, deepens our understanding of how heating transitions have driven sociocultural shifts, such as the shift from warming bodies to heating spaces and from embodied to concealed heating practices. While these changes may have offered greater convenience, our findings reveal that they often came at the expense of reduced enjoyment, less social interaction, and decreased care work associated with keeping warm. By applying the feminist energy systems framework to our findings, this study highlights how dominant power structures, including technomasculinity and ‘green growth’ ideologies, have shaped home heating transitions, de-politicised them, and overlooked relational aspects of energy systems in favour of increased productivity and efficiency.
