    Parent-Adolescent Communication, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Management of Type 1 Diabetes in Adolescents.

    PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate adolescent perspectives of parent-adolescent communication, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM)-specific family conflict, self-efficacy, and their relationship to adolescent self-management of T1DM.MethodsA cross-sectional survey design was employed. Adolescents completed measures of parent-adolescent communication, T1DM-specific family conflict, self-efficacy, and self-management, which included activation and division of responsibility for management tasks.ResultsSurveys were completed by 113 adolescents ages 11 to 17 years (mean age 13.85 years, SD 1.78) and living with T1DM for 6 months and longer. Hierarchical multiple regression sought to determine what variables make the most unique contribution to self-management of T1DM, division of family responsibility for management tasks, and activation. Self-efficacy was a significant predictor of division of family responsibility for T1DM management, patient activation, and all self-management subscales except collaboration with parents. Openness in parent-adolescent communication was a significant predictor of the diabetes communication and goals subscale of the self-management measure and activation. Problems in communication was a significant predictor of collaboration with parents and self-management goals.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that family context characteristics, particularly parent-adolescent communication, and self-efficacy are important for engagement with self-management for adolescents living with T1DM. Findings can inform future family-focused self-management interventions to improve T1DM outcomes for adolescents living with T1DM

    “OMG you look amazing”: A Systematic Examination of the Text-Based Interactions Surrounding UK Adolescent Girls’ Self-Images on Instagram

    Appearance-related content is ubiquitous across highly visual social media platforms, in both imagery and text. The present study aims to explore the content of text-based interactions initiated by self-images on Instagram. Seventeen adolescent girls from the UK (Age M = 15.12; SD = 1.80; Range = 12-18) provided data from their most recent Instagram posts (up to 10 posts) as part of one-to-one interviews. This included images (n = 85), captions (n = 85), direct comments on images (n = 630) and participants’ first replies to direct comments (n = 459). An inductive-deductive content analysis was used to analyse Instagram data, and a template analysis was used to analyse the interview data to aid with the interpretation of the content. Analyses showed positive appearance-related compliments were highly prevalent on Instagram posts (79.2% of comments) and were considered the norm. Compliments tended to focus on general, rather than specific appearance qualities. Girls tended to respond to compliments using likes, gratitude, or affectionate expressions. The findings highlight the role of self-objectification and self-presentation strategies in dictating the norms of adolescent girls’ text-based interactions on Instagram. Implications and directions for future research are discussed

    Basic understanding of the flow characteristics over a bio-inspired corrugated wing at low Reynolds Number (10’000) in gliding flight †

    A computational fluid dynamics based study of a corrugated wing section inspired by the dragonfly wing has been performed for a low Reynolds number (10’000) focusing on the gliding flight. The aerodynamic characteristics are compared to those of a typical technical aerofoil (NACA 0009). The objective of the study is to develop a simulation tool for the design and development of corrugated wings for aerospace applications and to gain better understanding of the flow over corrugated wing sections. The simulation results were verified using a convergence study and validated by an angle of attack study and comparison with experimental results. The results demonstrated the simulations capability of predicting key flow features but there were some discrepancies from the experimental observations, mainly the prediction of the critical angle of attack. Overall, the simulation results demonstrated a comparable, if not better, aerodynamic performance compared to the technical aerofoil

    A training framework for multi-professional advanced level practice in non-surgical oncology: The journey through development and consultation to consensus

    Introduction The Non-Surgical Oncology (NSO) workforce, like many healthcare specialities, faces critical personnel shortages. With a 21 % deficit in consultant oncologists anticipated by 2028, alongside vacancies in key roles such as therapeutic radiographers. To address these challenges, innovative workforce strategies are necessary, including the diversification of skills and the creation of advanced career pathways for healthcare professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals. Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Advanced Practitioners (APs) have emerged as pivotal in bridging workforce gaps; however, their training lacks standardisation. Methods This study utilised a multiphase design to gain consultation and consensus on the suitability of a newly developed NSO training framework adapted from the Royal College of Radiologists and Royal College of Physicians' joint curricula. Applying a modified Delphi approach, seen to be beneficial in curriculum design, and considering the diversity of professions and roles across the speciality, was used to develop an online survey which was distributed across the NSO healthcare sector. The survey aimed to gain consensus on the framework's alignment with clinical and educational needs and identify barriers to its implementation. Results On reviewing the NSO training framework, the majority of the panel members (n = 46/51; 90.2 %) felt the capabilities appropriately mapped to the 2017 MPF.7 When asked about the clarity of the overall introduction and the introduction to the CiPs an overall positive response rate was noted (n = 50/51; 98 %). There was a slightly lower level of consensus around the clarity of the generic and core oncology CiPs, and slightly less agreement in the speciality-specific capabilities. Following the first survey (round one), the responses were reviewed, and it was identified that overall, in eight out of ten of the questions agreement between panel members had exceeded the level of agreement established by the researchers. As a result, the decision was made to cease the surveys and analyse the results in full as a single round. Conclusion Addressing the projected workforce shortages in oncologists and other key non-surgical oncology roles, this study contributes a framework adapted from established curricula, ensuring an equitable and high-standard educational pathway for trainees. The multi-phase process revealed consensus for the framework's alignment with clinical and educational standards, particularly its focus on capabilities in practice (CiPs), though highlighted inconsistencies in supervision and assessment. Implications for practice The NSO framework is essential for ensuring equitable training, improving workforce retention, and enhancing patient care outcomes

    Working with primary teachers in England on mathematics teaching for citizenship: critical and philosophical approaches.

    In mathematics education research to date, there has been limited focus on the potential of philosophical frameworks to engage teachers in critical explorations of their teaching of mathematics. In this chapter, we examine the potential of such philosophical approaches in schools in England, considering affordances and limitations in relation to teachers' learning with respect to mathematics learning and teaching for social justice. These environments are places where controlling judgements on teacher performance are rife. The chapter springs out of an attempt to support teachers to engage critically with mathematics learning and teaching in schools through the vehicle of a European project, PiCaM (Project in Citizenship and Mathematics) which aimed to address issues of citizenship and globalisation through the teaching of mathematics. Through the development of curriculum resources for 10- to 12-year-olds and their teachers, it sought to contribute to combating discrimination, segregation, and racism, validating the cultural history, and supporting the education of all, including disadvantaged groups and migrant children. The project materials are founded upon inclusive, participatory, and innovative pedagogies with the novel inclusion of philosophical approaches to learning mathematics. Here we consider the impact of PiCaM on participating teachers and student teachers, using philosophical approaches ourselves to reflect critically on our work

    ‘Being there’ in more-than-human worlds; place, body and time in ethnographic research with children.

    In its attention to numerous small explorations with children and place, we reflect on how Edvard Munch’s painting “The Researchers” could almost be a scene from our ethnographic fieldwork with children. Prompted by our engagement with Munch’s painting, we explore three shifts in our own research practice over time. First, a shift from a sole focus on human relationships to the more-than-human nature of long-term research relations with place points to the bodily, relational nature of knowing that is not easily articulable in words. Second, we grapple with the shifting meaning and purpose of the “data set” within our research. By viewing data as part of a gift-giving logic, interconnection and shifting time scales are emphasized. Third, drawing on the Sámi concept of meahcci, we discuss how fieldwork became “unbounded” spatially and temporally, allowing new ways of knowing to emerge

    Profiling the persistent and episodic nature of long COVID symptoms and the impact on quality of life and functional status: a cohort observation study

    BackgroundPost-viral issues following acute infection with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), referred to widely as long COVID, are associated with episodic, persistent, and disabling symptoms affecting quality of life and functional status. Evidence demonstrates a significant impairment and long disease course, but there remains limited empirical data to profile and determine the fluctuating symptom profile of long COVID.MethodsWe devised a 16-week, multicentre prospective cohort observation study to profile changes in patient-reported outcomes, and biological, physiological, psychological, and cognitive parameters following diagnosis and/or referral to an established long COVID clinic. Following baseline assessments, participants completed four face-to-face visits interspersed with telephone consultations. Face-to-face visits included physiological assessment, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), functional status, and respiratory function. Telephone consultations involved PROMs and symptom profiling.ResultsPatient-reported outcomes improved from baseline to week sixteen, but demonstrated between visit fluctuations in frequency and severity. Further findings highlight the severity and frequency of long COVID symptom profiles and the extent of quality of life and functional status impairment.ConclusionsThe data presented here highlight the episodic and relapsing nature and should be used to help characterise long COVID disability. They can inform the development of long COVID-specific guidelines and support services that can adequately respond to the reductions in patient well-being
