Trading Cards of Nuclear Technology : A Science Communication Tool Developed for Gaining Literacy to Read Nuclear Policy Documents

    No full text
From the 1956 "Long-Term Program on the Development and Utilization of Atomic Energy" to the present-day "Strategic Energy Plan", documents related to relevant committees and nuclear power policies have been accumulated, and many of them may be read on the Internet. Moreover, there are diverse explanations and opinions based on these policy documents, as well as many papers on research and development that reflect them. On the other hand, 1956 was a time when Japan was transitioning from post-war reconstruction to high economic growth and was clearly aware of the possibility of war in the form of the Cold War. Under such circumstances, unless one is knowledgeable to appreciate, to some extent, the context and the source from which the benefits of a particular technology claimed in a particular policy document originate, it would be difficult to predict the actual effects of the technology when it is implemented in society. This might also mislead the general public, making it difficult to reflect the public opinion correctly in new policies. To address these dilemmas, a trading card game has been developed in which the players participate in the role-playing process as a proponent of a particular nuclear technology. The process consists of four phases, namely technology selection, understanding the current situation, policy making, and justification of the selected technology under the policy direction. The game could allow the players to predict the intent of the technology and policy communicato

Coping Processes of Teaching Stress in a Novice English Teacher : An Analysis Using the Trajectory Equifinality Model (TEM)

    No full text
This study investigated three key questions concerning a novice English teacher at a Japanese university: (1) What types of teaching stress did the teacher experience? (2) What factors influenced this stress? (3) What distinguished instances where the teacher managed stress effectively from those where they did not? A semi-structured interview was conducted and the resultant data analyzed using the Trajectory Equifinality Model and interpreted using the ALACT model. The results showed the following: (1) that the teacher experienced teaching stress related to pedagogical methods and employed coping strategies based on these individual stresses. With respect to (2), positive factors influencing stress reduction included reliable senior faculty, expectations from colleagues, future career development, online teaching, positive student evaluations, and building relationships with students. Conversely, the lack of educational opportunities hindered stress management. Regarding (3), enhancing reflective skills was suggested to improve stress management, with social factors playing a role. Thus, maintaining and expanding positive influences, reducing negative influences, and supporting the development of reflective skills can help novice English teachers manage teaching stress more effectively

Establishment of Competency-Based University Education System in Korea

    No full text
The adoption of competency-based education in Korean universities began in 1997, prompted by a worsening unemployment crisis among graduates following the currency crisis. This situation underscored the need for reforms in university education. In response, the government developed and published guidelines, along with the Korean Collegiate Essential. Skills Assessment. It also integrated competencybased education into external quality assurance frameworks to encourage universities to espouse this approach. Each university devised its own implementation process and promoted these initiatives. This report examines the Korean experience, highlighting the government' s efforts to advance competency-based education, providing specific examples from various universities, and analyzing the significance and associated challenges

Polydisperse stickiness and particle size on light scattering in dense colloidal suspensions : A numerical study using the binary sticky hard-sphere model

    No full text
In nanotechnology using scattered light and colloidal science, it is crucial to model the agglomeration of submicrometer-scale particles and light scattering in dense colloidal suspensions and clarify the quantitative relation between them. We numerically examined the effects of polydisperse stickiness and particle sizes on the scattering properties in the near-infrared optical wavelength using the dependent scattering theory (one of the electromagnetic theory) and bidisperse (binary) sticky hard-sphere (SHS) model at different stickiness parameters and particle sizes. The SHS model has been widely employed as a particle interaction model, but most previous works are for a monodisperse system. Actual suspensions are polydisperse, and our simple bidisperse models allow us to provide a physical interpretation of the two polydisperse effects. We showed that polydisperse stickiness contributions are effectively reduced to monodisperse cases with a mean value of the stickiness parameters. Meanwhile, we showed strong effects of the polydisperse particle size, and its contribution is not reduced to a monodisperse case. At a small particle size (around 100 nm), the polydispersity effects enhance the scattering properties even in the diffusive region of radiative transfer
