The Version of Record is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10338-026-00715-yStress relaxation experiments on a Zr50Cu34Ag8Al8 amorphous alloy reveal that its dynamic heterogeneity is captured by a Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts stretched exponential function, demonstrating a non-Gaussian, asymmetric relaxation spectrum. The analysis based on the generalized Maxwell model revealed that the relaxation process is accelerated at high temperatures, indicating that increasing temperature makes more deformation units and promotes the formation of “liquid-like” zones. ßkww exhibits a non-monotonous trend with temperature due to the combined effects of temperature and structural relaxation. Physical aging improves structural stability by shifting the activation energy distribution toward higher values for increasing aging times. This results in a system energetic state closer to equilibrium, lowering the overall energy level and suppressing the relaxation process. Notably, it is found that the dynamic heterogeneity does not decrease but instead increases with aging. These findings provide significant insights into the structural origins of the viscoelastic behavior of amorphous alloys. This work is supported by the NSFC (Grant Nos.52271153 and 12472069), the Natural Science Basic Research Plan for Distinguished Young Scholars in Shaanxi Province (Grant No. 2021JC-12), the Natural Science Foundation of Shaanxi Province (Grant No. 2025GH-YBXM-046), and the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities. No full text
This paper analyzes bias correction in satellite-derived annual maximum precipitation series and reanalyses in the Piura River basin, Peru. Quantile Mapping, Polynomial Regression Linear Transformation, Multiplicative Delta, and other techniques were applied to satellite products (CHIRPS, ERA5, MERRA-2, PERSIANN-CDR, PISCO, and RAIN4PE), evaluating their statistical performance using NSE, RMSE, MAE, PBIAS, and KS. Observed data from six official stations were used, after homogeneity and completion tests using Random Forest. The results showed that Quantile Mapping and PISCO offer the best statistical fit, even at stations with gaps. Furthermore, the transfer of correction parameters between stations with similar climates was explored, finding that statistical similarity best fits geographic proximity as a selection criterion. This approach is useful for improving data quality in ungauged basins and supporting hydrological design in areas with limited monitoring

Enhancing non-stationary rotodynamic monitoring through current signature analysis

    No full text
Early detection and primary monitoring of rotodynamic degradation in industrial machinery require robust methodologies capable of accurately analyzing non-stationary signals, particularly under variable-speed conditions where conventional techniques often fail. This study introduces a novel online Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) methodology based on advanced Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA), specifically designed to improve frequency estimation and fault progression tracking in rotating machinery operating under variable-speed conditions. The proposed approach integrates a power spectral density (PSD) estimation algorithm optimized for non-stationary environments and is benchmarked against the Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF), Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN), and conventional vibration-based techniques. The methodology operates at the level of degradation-related feature extraction and early fault indication, without developing explicit prognostic models or decision-level maintenance strategies. In particular, remaining useful life (RUL) estimation, health index-based prognostics, and maintenance optimization frameworks are outside the scope of the present study. The methodology is validated using two accelerated bearing run-to-failure experiments conducted on a single industrial testbench, incorporating variable-speed profiles and progressive bearing degradation. Cross-asset, cross-plant, and large-scale industrial generalization are not addressed in this work and remain topics for future investigation. Results demonstrate superior accuracy in frequency tracking, achieving significantly lower mean squared error (MSE) compared to ANF- and CEEMDAN-based techniques. Moreover, the extracted features exhibit greater sensitivity to early fault development, while monotonicity and robustness metrics confirm the reliability of the proposed methodology for fault progression monitoring within the considered experimental scenarios. This study was supported by the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) through the MIG-20232016, INDUSTR-IA project, the Doctorats Industrials program from the Catalonia Government (Ref. 2022 DI 00093) and the project SEAMLESS (Ref. Llibre creat en el marc de l'assignatura Arquitectura, Medi Ambient i Tecnologia del máster universitari en Estudis Avançats en Arquitectura-Barcelona (MBArch), impartida el curs 2025/2026"Arquitectura, Medi Ambient i Tecnologia. Projecte, Procés i Programació.

Cell sorting models in tissue development

    No full text
In animal embryos, cell fate specification coordinates with the spatial organisation of cells into distinct domains, leading to the establishment of embryonic boundaries. Multiple hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanisms underlying cell sorting, focussing on differences in tissue adhesiveness, contractility, or cell motility. Here, we summarise the main mathematical models of cell sorting and review recent findings showing how these models yield new insights into the problem. Finally, we briefly comment on the limitations of each approach and the importance of identifying the key biophysical ingredients when building a model.D.O. and M.P.-H. acknowledge funding from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under project PID2024-155925NA-I00.

    No full text

Enhancing sulfate-rich wastewater treatment through polyvinyl alcohol -immobilized sulfidogenic granules: optimization of reactor configuration and bioaugmentation strategies

    No full text
Sulfate-rich wastewater can pose significant environmental challenges due to its potential to acidify water bodies and disrupt ecosystems. This study evaluates the efficacy of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized sulfidogenic granules for sulfate removal and H2S production in two continuous-flow reactor configurations, column reactor (CR) and continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Using pure glycerol as electron donor, the CR demonstrated superior performance, removing >¿95¿% sulfate at initial loading rates =¿1.75 Kg S-SO4²¿·m¿³¿·d¿¹¿, with minimal biomass washout (1.94¿g volatile suspended solids (VSS)·L-1in CR vs. 7.8¿g VSS·L-1 in CSTR), setting a C/S ratio of 6.25 Kg O2·Kg-1 SO42-. Parameter optimization minimized volatile fatty acids accumulation, with acetate constituting 92¿% of total volatile fatty acids. After long-term operation (101 days), Desulfovibrio were enriched to 21.3¿% of the total community whereas methanogens were almost fully removed (<0.03¿%). After bioaugmentation with immobilized granules overgrown with sulfate-reducing and acetate-oxidizing bacteria (SRB-AO) acetate efflux was reduced by 54¿%, highlighting the potential to control byproduct formation. The PVA granules achieved a sulfate removal rate of 0.19 Kg S-SO4²¿·m¿³¿·d¿¹¿·g VSS¿¹¿·L, which was similar to that of conventional suspended-growth sulfate-reducing systems (e.g., CSTR or flocculent UASB reactors) with fivefold higher biomass concentrations, while reducing startup time to 10 days. Total sulfide rate (including H2S and HS-) obtained at these conditions was 0.93 Kg·m-3·d-1. This work pioneers the integration of artificial granulation and granule bioaugmentation for scalable, highly-efficient sulfate removal, offering treatment options for industrial wastewater.Authors acknowledge the Spanish Government for the financial support provided to perform this research, through the project PID2021–126253OB-C22 funded by MCIN/AEI /10.13039/501100011033/ FEDER, UE.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Breaking the jam: bridge wood-jam break during a flash flood in a Mediterranean river, insights from hydrodynamic modeling and post flood observations

    No full text
Study region The upper Francolí River catchment (Spain) in the Mediterranean region. Study focus In October 2019, the upper Francolí River experienced extreme rainfall (293¿mm in 24¿h), triggering devastating flash floods that caused six fatalities, impacted infrastructures (e.g., four bridges collapsed), and led to significant bio-geomorphological changes along the river corridor, including the erosion and transport of large amounts of large wood (LW). This study investigated the effects of this flood, particularly the LW transport and accumulation, combining post-flood observations and numerical modeling over a 1.6¿km reach near the L’Espluga de Francolí village (Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula). Using the Iber-Wood, a coupled two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic and LW transport model, 31 scenarios were simulated to analyze water flow, sediment transport, and large wood dynamics, focusing on wood-related accumulation and blockage of bridges. New hydrological insights for the region Results demonstrate the model’s ability to replicate observed water depths, flooded area, morphological changes, sediment erosion and deposition, and wood accumulation. LW retention at bridges was found to depend strongly on hydraulic conditions and hydrograph shape. Retention efficiency decreased with increasing discharge, and simulations revealed that wood jams can temporarily block flow, delay the hydrograph, and generate sudden surges when the jam breaks. This blockage–breakage cycle, captured through modeling and field evidence, is critical to understanding how LW contributes to rapid shifts in flood hazard. The findings emphasize the need to consider LW dynamics, hydrograph complexity, and tributary inputs in flood risk assessments, and support the development of more resilient infrastructure and mitigation strategies in mountainous Mediterranean rivers. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the project “Monitoring, modelling and integration of methods for the control of active mountain processes” (MINEICO-AEI/FEDER, UE: CGL2017–84720-R).
