Computational strategies for time-accurate simulation of part-scale LPBF

    No full text
Tesi en modalitat de compendi de publicacions(English) The qualification of MAM (Metal Additive Manufacturing) processes remains a major challenge due to the complex thermo-mechanical phenomena involved. The process is driven by a small moving heat source that generates highly localized, transient thermal gradients and induces thermal strains. As these strains are constrained by the surrounding material, residual stresses and warpage develop, causing part distortion or even failure. Accurate modeling is essential for understanding the underlying physics, as well as for reliable process qualification and parameter optimization. However, such simulations are computationally expensive due to the small size of the heat source, which introduces disparate spatial scales, and its continuous motion, which gives rise to equally disparate temporal scales. The need to simultaneously resolve these scales renders high-fidelity part-scale simulations prohibitively expensive. This thesis contributes to the field of MAM modeling on both the applied and methodological fronts. On the applied side, methods for warpage and stress itigation are investigated in both DED (Directed Energy Deposition) and LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) processes, including a novel substrate design strategy for DED that significantly reduces residual stresses, and a modeling framework to capture recoater–induced build failure in LPBF. On the methodological front, the thesis focuses on developing efficient strategies for high-fidelity part-scale simulations of LPBF processes, with particular emphasis on overcoming the disparity of temporal scales. While AMR (Adaptive Mesh Refinement) has become a popular approach to address the challenge of disparate spatial scales, uniform time stepping remains the standard approach in the field. For centimeter-scale parts, this can require hundreds of millions of time-steps, making such simulations computationally unfeasible. Commonly used strategies to alleviate this issue involve extreme simplifications of the thermal model, such as lumping multiple tracks or layers into a single time-step. Effectively, this liminates the small scales associated with the moving heat source but compromises the model's predictive accuracy, requiring additional calibration. Two methods are proposed to address the temporal-scale disparity without eliminating the underlying small scales: the advected subdomain and a Robin–Robin substepping scheme, both designed to preserve model fidelity while drastically reducing computational cost. The advected subdomain method attaches a moving mesh to the laser. By solving the thermal problem in the reference frame of the heat source, the transient dynamics near the melt pool become quasi-steady, allowing the use of significantly larger time-steps. Substepping divides the domain into regions that evolve with different time-steps: finer steps are applied locally around the moving heat source, while larger steps are used away from it. The developed Robin-Robin coupling scheme proves robust and ensures mesh-independent convergence between the regions. These methods and their components are systematically evaluated through numerical analysis, benchmarked against standard approaches, and validated against experimental data. Furthermore, they are combined to compound their respective benefits. Together, these contributions advance numerical MAM modeling, thereby improving the computational efficiency of high-fidelity simulations and enabling reliable process qualification and optimization.(Català) La qualificació dels processos de fabricació additiva metàllica (MAM) continua sent un repte a causa dels complexos fenòmens termo-mecànics implicats.

However, with legislative progress stalled, farmers increasingly bear the responsibility for implementing pesticide reduction. This highlights the need to understand how decisions are made and what shapes farmers' intentions to adopt technologies that reduced pesticide use, particularly in orchard systems where pesticide dependence remains high despite the availability of promising alternatives. This study examines stakeholder roles in orchard pest management, identifies key drivers of farmers’ adoption intentions, and develops a tool to predict adoption likelihood. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining expert interviews (n = 16) and a structured survey of orchard farmers (n = 354). We extended the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by incorporating three additional constructs: perceived cost, relative advantage of current practices, and perceived ease of use, all based on established behavioral theories. Results show that decision-making involves multiple stakeholders and is influenced by factors such as farm size, ownership structure, and external pressures. Meanwhile, structural equation modeling shows that attitudes and perceived ease of use significantly boost adoption intentions. In contrast, perceived cost and the relative advantage of current practices serve as barriers. Subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were not significant predictors. Based on these findings, a web-based adoption intention predictive tool was developed to support stakeholders in assessing adoption likelihood. The study offers practical insights for reducing adoption barriers, strengthening positive attitudes toward innovation, and supporting sustainable pest management in orchard systems. This study was supported by the NOVATERRA project under the research grant agreement number: 101000554.

    No full text

This paper develops and validates a parametric finite element (FE) model capable of predicting the behavior of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubes (CFST) under bending. The simulations are performed using ANSYS Mechanical APDL, and the results are validated against experimental data from three four-point monotonic bending tests on CFST beams. These experiments were carried out as part of the research project STCC SIFECAT: IU68009746, funded by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) through the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR) – Generalitat de Catalunya. The FE results show reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The material models used include linear elastic behavior with linear strain hardening for steel, and the Menetrey-Willam model for concrete. Additionally, a theoretical analysis is carried out to estimate the CFST maximum bending moment capacity. The paper presents and compares theoretical predictions, experimental results, and FE simulations, providing insights for improving the simulation approach and identifying directions for future work. The first author wants express gratitude to Prof. Dr.-Ing.Michael W. Sustainable nutrient recovery via progressive freezing of anaerobically digested POME: insights into process parameters and trade-offs

    No full text
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) generates a nutrient-rich digestate following anaerobic digestion (AD), yet this stream remains underutilized and contributes to nutrient pollution when unmanaged. This study evaluates progressive freezing (PF) as a low-energy, chemical-free separation technique for recovering nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) from AD-treated POME. A custom-designed circulated freeze crystallizer (CFC) was used to examine how coolant temperature (-5, -10, -15 °C), freezing duration (50–70min), and circulation flowrate (300–500rpm) influence volume reduction (Vr), nutrient recovery (Ri), process efficiency (PEi), and nutrient yield (Yi) under a 3³factorial experimental framework. Coolant temperature was the dominant determinant of separation performance, with -15 °C achieving the greatest ice formation (Vr = 14.75%) and nutrient retention (>97% for N, P, K). Longer freezing durations improved solute exclusion, with PEi peaking at 43% at 70min but showing diminishing gains beyond 60min. Circulation flowrate exerted nonlinear hydrodynamic effects, with 300rpm achieving the most favourable balance of solute rejection and nutrient recovery (TN: 94.75%, TP: 96.06%, K: 96.53%). These findings demonstrate PF’s potential as a sustainable and decentralised nutrient recovery pathway for circular bioeconomy applications, while providing essential parameter-specific insights for future scale-up and energy-integration strategies.Acknowledgements: The authors would like to acknowledge the financial assistance from Yayasan Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (YUTP) through cost centre of 015LC0-546 and the facilities support from HICoE – Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR), and Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

    No full text
This article examines the parametric reconstruction and structural analysis of a modern stained-glass window in the Santísima Trinidad Church, Caracas (Venezuela), attributed to the artist Omar Carreño. The partial loss of original documentation and limited site access prompted the development of a hybrid methodology combining archival research, interviews, sketches, in situ measurements, parametric modelling in SolidWorks and augmented-reality visualisation. The workflow clearly differentiates historical sources from methodological procedures. Objective: to establish a replicable sequence for interpreting complex geometries under constructive logic in contexts of deficient documentation. Hypothesis: integrating incomplete historical records, on-site measurements, and parametric modelling can produce a geometrically reliable digital twin to support preventive conservation, structural interpretation, and interdisciplinary knowledge transfer. Results confirm the methodological validity of reconstructive modelling for modern Latin American heritage, providing a transferable workflow for the documentation of non-canonical architectural typologies using accessible technologies.Postprint (author's final draft

    No full text
The construction sector needs to move towards a more circular model, since within the current linear economic model it consumes approximately 40% of global resource extraction, which makes it unsustainable in the long term. In this context, having clear and structured information about what materials a building contains and in what quantities is key to managing buildings as material banks and avoiding continuous resource extraction. With this premise, the aim of this Master’s Thesis is to develop and apply a practical methodology to create a material passport for an existing building, to inventory its contents and facilitate its management over time. At present, this is still uncommon for existing buildings, as material passports are mainly conceived for new constructions, and in existing buildings the lack of traceability and the limited availability of data make it difficult to establish a standardized procedure. To achieve the objectives of this study, an inventory of the main construction elements of the GAIA building, located on the UPC Terrassa university campus, has been prepared based on the available information. This information has been organized into a material passport structured by systems and elements, where the associated materials are quantified and it is explicitly indicated which information is documented and which has been estimated through justified assumptions. In addition, the materials have been linked to representative EPDs to estimate environmental indicators, both at a global scale and broken down by construction elements. This linking makes it possible to analyze how the availability of information declared in the EPDs affects the results. Overall, the project demonstrates the feasibility of developing a material passport for an existing building in a structured and transparent way, providing orders of magnitude for material quantities and environmental impacts
