Community Center for Outdoor Recreation
The proposed community center is situated on the outskirts of Bredäng, Stockholm, in close proximity to the Sätraskogen nature reserve. The project was conceived with the aim of reinforcing and supporting outdoor recreational activities within this landscape. The building program comprises facilities for the local scout corps, artists’ studios, a library, a workshop, and a hostel. The overarching theme of the project is hybrid architecture, which is articulated through the integration of a diverse range of functions within a single structure. In this context, hybridity is understood as the capacity of these functions to coexist and to generate synergies through their interaction. At the time of development, the designated site consisted of an expansive, underutilized area at the western edge of Bredäng, lacking a defined role within the wider community. This condition informed the conceptual basis of the project: the establishment of a community center designed to draw attention to the adjacent nature reserve and to underscore its social and ecological value for both local residents and the broader public. Accordingly, principles of openness and accessibility were prioritized in the design process, directly shaping decisions regarding spatial organization and structural configuration
Simplification of theDES-Model Building Process : Facilitating an Early-Stage Validation
As production systems keep getting more complex, the need for decision-making tools such as DES increases. The more complex nature of production systems also calls for simplification of the DES model-building process in order to reduce its required time and resources. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to develop a structured model-building strategy that balances model complexity and accuracy whilst also, through systematic simplification, facilitates an early-stage validation. By initially conducting a literature review, insights are leveraged to develop a proposed simplification strategy.Central to the strategy is the prioritisation of real-system components in accordance with their modelling ease and impact on model accuracy; and the model-building approach which in part omits, aggregates and/or substitutes less prioritised components, but which also facilitates iterative model building and thus stops when an accuracy threshold is met. Therefore, the strategy lessens the complexity added to the model and the resources required for the model building. In a case study, the proposed simplification strategy is then applied at an automated automotive production line. The components from the production line are prioritised and assigned one of ten simplification levels, each level corresponding to one model which in turn is an expansion from the previous. In total, seven out of ten model iterations were completed before meeting the accuracy threshold. Results show that the model error decreases as more complexity is added, but with a trend of diminishing results. While the proposed simplification strategy quantifies the modelling ease of components as well as the components’ impact on model accuracy, the quantification still has the disadvantage of relying on the user's prior knowledge of the production system and the user’s experience with simulation modelling. In future work, a method to objectively classify components on impact and/or ease should be developed, and the simplification strategy proposed in this thesis should be tested on other cases to further investigate its effectiveness.I takt med att produktionssystem blir mer komplexa ökar behovet av beslutsfattande verktyg som DES.
Nuclear energy is an essential source of electricity, combining reliability with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, the serious accidents that have occurred in the past have highlighted the need for a better understanding of these phenomena in order to improve the safety of installations. The ROSAU project is part of this approach, studying the spread of corium under water using experimental tests (MST). At EDF’s request and in response to this need, LMAG is proposing, through the objective of this project degree, to qualify the THEMA modelling code on these tests and to improve our understanding of spreading phenomena. The MST tests involve prototypical corium masses of around, 300kg discharged by dam-breaking method or by a jet into a spreading chamber and whose final spreading, of the order of a metre, is reached in ~1s. The construction of the dataset for modelling the MST-3 test was based on an analysis of the test reports, a preliminary study of the MST-0 test (dry test) and a sensitivity study of the poorly known simulation parameters influencing the spread. THEMA predicts a final spreading length of 0.84m in 1.3s, i.e. a dynamic error of 100%, comparable to the MELTSPREAD’s results. The spreading dynamics are mainly determined by the initial phase of the injection, representing 30% of the total mass, underlining the importance of suitable boundary conditions for modelling a corium jet. The flow regime observed is turbulent in the flow front, suggesting the need for 2D modelling. However, the calculation presented a convergence problem and called into question the method used to take the upper crust into account. The sensitivity analysis identified the parameters with the greatest influence on corium spreading in the MST-3 tests. The injection temperature are the most important, but as it’s not well known due to the experimental conditions, that leds to an incorrect assessment of the corium solidification and its dispersion in the melt. In addition, the post-mortem analysis indicates significant abla- tion of the substrate by impact, having modified the composition of the corium via incorporation of concrete and degassing. Although THEMA incorporates a model of the swelling of the melt, adjustments are needed to better represent ablation and solidification, which are still poorly modelled at this stage.Kärnenergi är en viktig källa till elektricitet som kombinerar tillförlitlighet med minskade utsläpp av växthusgaser.
Energy communities enable citizens to collaboratively produce and share renewable energy, encouraging local engagement and supporting the energy transition. However, their growth is often slowed by regulatory challenges and the lack of accessible, easy-to-use tools for planning and decision-making. This thesis aims to extend two new analytical tools designed specifically for energy communities and local stakeholders. The tools model various energy sharing schemes based on simple inputs like individual photovoltaic generation and consumption profiles, allowing users to compare financial outcomes for community members against scenarios without sharing. One tool incorporates multiple sharing mechanisms, including proximity-based and virtual models, to address fairness and efficiency in energy distribution. The second helps stakeholders to take technological investment decisions, while choosing the most economical, technical and environmental solution. Both tools are applied to a case study of a community in Örebro, Sweden, composed of 10 residential buildings, demonstrating their practical relevance and capacity to support informed governance decisions. Results first show that the sharing method called “Cascade Equal Share” seems to be the most beneficial in all situations, and that investments in batteries or the use of Electric Vehicles or V2G is not necessary or really beneficial with the studied assumptions. Results also show that investing in solar panels increases self-sufficiency substantially, and leads to energy bills, with 10% savings compared to a business-as-usual case. Being reunited in a community leads to savings up to 3% bill each year. Finally, CO2 emissions for the consumed electricity can be reduced by up to 16% for a Swedish household involved in a community.
This study examines several cases with PV-battery systems on residential and commercial buildings in Sweden and northern Europe to investigate their business models to determine their profitability. The aim is to identify the most cost-effective model and suggest KTH Live-inLab to implement it on their PV-battery system. The method of the study was to analyse similar cases to KTH Live-in-Lab with comparable PV and battery sizes and their economic strategies such as self-sufficiency, peak shaving and supplying ancillary services, and evaluate which model is the most economically feasible. An integrated analysis of these case studies was conducted and summarized to give an overview of success factors, challenges and advantages of the studies. Findings determine that profitability is highly dependent on battery cost, the price of electricity, subsidies, tariff structures and participation in ancillary service markets. The study concludes that the recommendation for KTH Live-In-Lab should be to provide flexibility services such as FCR-D up and down as it has proven to be the most profitable throughout the cases.
Comparative evaluation of Green Building Standards in India
India’s ongoing urban transformation, driven by population growth and economic development, has significantly accelerated the expansion of the building sector. This rapid urbanization has led to a sharp increase in energy consumption, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, particularly in densely populated cities. In response, green building standards have emerged as essential tools to guide sustainable development by promoting resource efficiency, reducing carbon footprints, and enhancing the overall quality of life within built environments. This thesis presents a comparative evaluation of two of India’s leading green building rating systems—GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) and IGBC (Indian Green Building Council). The study aims to assess their respective effectiveness in promoting sustainability through a detailed simulation-based analysis. A low-rise office building, located in New Delhi’s composite climate zone, serves as the case study. A baseline building model is developed using IDA-ICE building performance simulation software, after which energy efficiency measures are integrated according to each rating system’s specific requirements and guidelines. Key sustainability parameters, annual energy consumption, thermal comfort, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality, are assessed for both ratings. The simulation results indicate that both the GRIHA and IGBC frameworks result in substantial reductions in energy use when compared to the baseline model. IGBC achieves slightly higher energy savings (98 kWh/m² compared to 100 kWh/m² for GRIHA) and marginally better thermal comfort performance. However, GRIHA offers a broader and more socially inclusive approach, emphasizing environmental sensitivity, affordability, and contextual integration with local climate and resources. The comparative analysis reveals that while both systems are effective in promoting sustainable building design, each has unique strengths and trade-offs. IGBC tends to prioritize market-driven performance, whereas GRIHA emphasizes holistic sustainability. The findings of this study provide practical insights for architects, developers, policymakers, and sustainability professionals in selecting the most appropriate green building certification framework for office buildings in India’s evolving urban context
Techno-economic analysis of e-fuels production as seasonal energy storage in southern Sweden
Electrified production of e-fuels, such as e-methanol and e-ammonia, offers a promising pathway for energy storage and decarbonization of power generation. In this context, this study investigates the techno-economic feasibility of two fully electrified e-fuel production pathways powered by renewable energy, targeting a supply of 166 GWh/year for gas turbine applications in southern Sweden. The analysis compares centralized (Grid-connected) and decentralized (Wind-powered) supply modes for two synthesis routes: methanol synthesis from a direct aircaptured (DAC )unit via PEM electrolysis unit, and ammonia synthesis from PEM electrolysis unit and a cryogenic air separation unit (ASU). A plant production of 33 kt/year of e-methanol and 35,4 kt/year of e-ammonia is modeled under seasonal (4,045 h/year) and continuous (flexible) operation modes. Results show that plant oversizing in seasonal operation leads to high CAPEX per unit of fuel, resulting in levelized costs of 22’040 SEK/ton for e-methanol and 15’884 SEK/ton for e-ammonia. In contrast, continuous operation improves cost-efficiency, reducing LCOP to 17’770 SEK/ton and 14’010 SEK/ton, respectively. Despite its economic penalty, the Wind Scenario ensures energy independence, with optimized LCOPs of 24’768 SEK/ton for e-methanol and 18’623 SEK/ton for e-ammonia. PEM electrolysis remains the dominant cost driver (more than 50% of the annual cost). The DAC unit contributes over 30% of e-methanol’s annual costs, while the ASU unit contributes only 4% of e-ammonia’s annual costs. Although the current levelized costs exceed those of fossil-based fuels, electrified production offers climate benefits and operational flexibility. Future improvements in DAC efficiency, access to biogenic CO2, and dynamic operation strategies could significantly enhance economic competitiveness. These findings provide actionable insights for stakeholders considering efuels as low-carbon, dispatchable alternatives in power systems with high shares of renewable energy.
Building Accounts : A Material History of Three Ordinary Welfare Service Buildings in Stockholm (1969-2025)
Building Accounts is a study of three ordinary welfare service buildings in suburban Stockholm; it investigates how larger sociopolitical and economic changes in society are registered and revealed in the changing materiality of buildings over time. The three buildings – a parklek (a public staffed playground), a public preschool, and a municipal district administration office – were built in 1969, 1970, and 1971, respectively, as part of the growing Swedish welfare state. These buildings have experienced a series of changes: one of the buildings disappeared in 2009 (it was demolished), one started to smell mouldy and was closed to the public in 2015, and the last changed its use (and users), appearance, and internal plan between 2016 and 2021. In this thesis, what I call the ‘building account’ acts as a theoretical and methodological framework for analysing the neoliberal shift that has occurred in Sweden in the last fifty years, in terms of how it has affected the materiality of the buildings and the activities that occur inside them. The focus of this study is not solely the history of the social welfare services but also how the buildings and their architecture facilitated and actively shaped the activities inside and how changes made to their materiality over time stopped or prevented those buildings from operating as originally intended. As a theoretical concept, the building account unpacks the complex double-sidedness of materiality and architecture, operating as a means for analysing the wide-reaching (and often hard to see) material and social consequences of social, political, and economic shifts in society. The building account also offers a method for studying buildings that have not been widely documented in sources traditionally used within architectural history. Building Accounts illustrates that while many small material and physical changes to a building may not effect a large or harmful impact in their own right, in accumulation, such changes greatly affect our built and social environments. In the cases addressed here, those changes, I argue, complicate our understanding of the historical entanglements between buildings and the Swedish welfare state.
Hybrid Offshore Renewables System : Assessing Benefits of CombiningOffshore Wind and Waves
This study presents a preliminary technical and economic assessment of a hybrid offshore renewable energy system combining floating offshore wind turbines with wave energy converters (WECs), deployed 20 km offshore Viana do Castelo, Portugal. The research evaluates the potential benefits and setbacks of integrating these technologies on a single platform compared to their individual deployment and co-location. The methodology evolved hydrodynamic modelling using WAMIT computer program to simulate system behaviour in regular waves, coupled with Python scrypts for post processing in both regular and irregular waves. The resource assessment was done using 20 years of meteorological data (1992-2012). Three main study cases were investigated: a standalone 10 MW floating offshore wind turbine (Baseline Case I), three cylindrical point-absorber WECs (Baseline Case II), and a hybrid system combining both technologies (Hybrid Case). The WECs were optimized through geometry and power take-off (PTO) system tuning, with resultant optimal dimensions of 4 m radius and 5 m draft, and a negative spring stiffness of -356,400 N/m to match local wave conditions. Key findings demonstrate that the hybrid system provides enhanced platform stability when deployed in Viana do Castelo, reducing maximum heave, roll and pitch motions by 32.7%, 30.0% and 28.6%, respectively, compared to Baseline Case I. However, wave energy output in the hybrid configuration decreased by approximately 30% compared to Baseline Case II due to hydrodynamic interactions. The hybrid system slightly improved power output stability (coefficient of variation reduced by 2-5%) compared to Baseline Case I and a preliminary economic analysis revealed similar levelized costs of energy (LCOE) for these configurations, around 179 €/MWh – within the expected range for offshore wind energy. This work concludes that hybrid offshore wind-wave systems offer a variety of technical benefits, coupled with potential economic, social and environmental advantages, even though the current wave technological maturity may limit its current viability. The research aims to provide a foundation for future optimization studies that could improve the performance of hybrid offshore renewable energy systems and contribute to the green path of the energy transition.
Reaping opportunities and responding to threats of academic internationalisation : Navigating inherent tensions through a mix of policy instruments
This thesis investigates how governments respond to the threats and opportunitiesposed by academic internationalisation within an increasingly complex global setting. The primary focus is on the mix of policy instruments employed to navigate thetensions between openness vs protectionism and autonomy vs government control. Focusing on Sweden and the broader Nordic context, the study examines how instruments across three distinct modes – hierarchical, market-based, and networked– are designed, combined and recalibrated to balance competing rationales within ahybrid governance setting. Two research questions guide the analysis: (1) How and why do governments designand implement policy instrument mixes to steer academic internationalisation, andhow are these shaped by competing governance rationales and the tensions between(i) openness and protectionism and (ii) autonomy and state control? (2) How do these policy instrument mixes shape the conditions and trade-offs associated with academicinternationalisation? The conceptual framework emphasises how policy instruments operate in a multilayeredhigher education (HE) system, including government ministries, intermediaryfunding agencies, and higher education institutions (HEIs). By drawing on literaturerelated to hybridity in HE governance, internationalisation, policy instruments, andmetagovernance, the framework establishes a foundation for addressing the research questions. Empirically, the thesis comprises four articles that explore three policy settings:international student recruitment, bilateral research funding/science diplomacy, andresearch security. A qualitative, multi-case policy analysis is employed to illustrate howthese instruments are constructed, interpreted, and implemented across the multilayeredHE policy system. Quantitative data are also partially used to triangulatefindings and to enhance a mixed-methods approach. In the concluding discussion, the thesis highlights the significance of combiningvarious policy instruments, and their relationship to governance modes in establishingconditions for academic internationalisation. Governance is portrayed as a process ofcontinuous recalibration, where autonomy, control, openness, and protectionism arerelational dynamics influenced by instrument design, actor agency and implementationprocesses. From this perspective, the governance of internationalisation is less aboutseeking an optimal balance than about managing ongoing negotiations betweencompeting imperatives, a challenge likely to intensify amid growing geopolitical uncertainties.
