ASRS
Automated Storage and Retrieval System, ASRS, are used in many industries to increase efficiency, accuracy and space optimization. This thesis is aimed to design and build a simplified version of such a system, using basic mechatronics principles and components. The goal was to develop a prototype capable of reliably moving and placing objects with sufficient accuracy in a small-scale setting, and to evaluate its repeatability. The system was built around a Cartesian robot that allows movement along three axes: X, Y, and Z. The shelf was laser-cut, and several structural components were 3D-printed to simplify manufacturing and reduce costs. Movement was achieved using stepper motors combined with timing belts and linear guide rails. Micro-switches were installed on all axes to determine the system’s position. The ASRS operated in two subsystems: the automated retrieval mechanism and the user interface. Communication between these subsystems was handled via the ESP-NOW protocol. The result was a functional, downscaled version of a mini-load ASRS capable of transporting boxes within a storage structure with acceptable accuracy. However, the system lacked high precision, as revealed during the testing phase. Several challenges were encountered during development, particularly regarding mechanical tolerances and achieving smooth motion with 3D-printed components. These issues were addressed through mechanical adjustments and calibration.Se file
Developing a Climate-Aligned Long-Term Energy Systems Model for Madagascar : Integrating OSeMOSYS and OnSSET for Low-Carbon Electrification Planning
Madagascar faces the dual challenge of achieving universal electricity access while aligning with global climate goals. With electrification rates below 40% and an increasing reliance on climatevulnerable hydropower and fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to identify sustainable, costeffective, and climate-resilient pathways. This study addresses these challenges by integrating two powerful open-source modeling tools OSeMOSYS for national-level energy system optimization and OnSSET for geospatial electrification planning into a unified framework tailored to Madagascar’s context. The research evaluates three scenarios: Business-As-Usual (BAU), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and Low Shadow Price of Carbon (LSPC). These scenarios are assessed across key metrics, including electrification rates, investment costs, emissions, generation capacity, and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Results reveal that the LSPC scenario emerges as the most sustainable pathway, achieving universal access by 2050, minimizing LCOE, and reducing grid-related CO₂ emissions to near-zero levels. In contrast, the BAU pathway stagnates, resulting in persistent rural energy poverty and high emissions due to continued reliance on fossil fuels. Spatial analysis confirms a persistent urban–rural divide, with decentralized systems such as standalone PV and hybrid mini-grids proving indispensable in rural and peri-urban regions. While the grid remains a cornerstone of access, it is heavily dependent on hydropower, raising concerns about climate vulnerability under future drought conditions. These findings underscore the value of diversifying the electricity mix with solar PV and storage solutions for enhanced resilience. The soft linking of OSeMOSYS and OnSSET is essential for delivering a temporally and spatially nuanced analysis, addressing core research questions about how, where, and with which technologies universal electrification can be achieved. This integrated framework not only guides energy investment and planning in Madagascar but also provides a replicable blueprint for other climate-vulnerable developing countries. The study concludes with actionable recommendations for policymakers to accelerate low-carbon electrification while enhancing climate resilience.
Extensive changes to both the building and the local area have occured during the nearly 55 years since Alby Centrum was built. Since the building permit for the centrum was received by the municipality, hardly a single year has passed without some sort of change in the building. This has resulted in a chaotic centrum, shaped by the fact that it has clearly been expanded and renovated within the constraints of the original building and by pure necessity. The rational structure of pillars, in conjunction with the expansive garage under the building, provides excellent conditions for a reorganization of the centrum. This project aims to introduce new qualities to the building, enhancing the possibilities to manage issues in the area today, with special attention towards creating opportunities within education
Factors influencing perceived safety on unmanned, autonomouscommuter ferries : How to facilitate acceptance of autonomous unmanned ferries
The study was performed as a master's thesis project in Industrial Design Engineering by two Students at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The thesis explores the topic of ferry boat commuting as a Socio-Technical system and how the introduction of an unmanned autonomous ferry could disrupt this system. It investigates the aspects of perceived safety and how a person’s perception of safety on a commuter ferry would change if it was unmanned and/or autonomous. Furthermore, the creation of a safe atmosphere was explored. The company Zeam operates the autonomous commuter ferry, Ms. Estelle, which serves an area in the Stockholm archipelago. Today, an operator is present onboard, but pending new regulations for autonomous vessels, the company's goal is to move the operator to a remotecontrol centre. In the case of such a change, it is important to assess the need for the service and whether people would actually be willing to use it. The main goal with this master's thesis was thus to explore people's perception of safety to identify factors that contribute to the willingness and unwillingness for the hypothetical scenario of travelling with an unmanned and autonomous ferry. A secondary goal was to introduce some suggestions on how to address these factors. During the project, an approach combining various existing design approaches was built and applied. The combined approach consisted of a Socio-Technical System view, the diverging and converging aspects of the Double Diamond process, the principles of combining a cyclic design process and hierarchical system structure from the Multilevel Design model, as well as principles from Human-Centred Design. The focus of the process was gathering research, both from a theoretical framework, but mainly from user studies, and then condensing all insights into different factors. The study showed that there were mixed opinions regarding attitudes towards the hypothetical scenario; some were sceptical of the technology, while others were sceptical about the lack of personnel. Five main factors contributing to the perception of safety on an unmanned, autonomous ferry were identified: Sense of control & feeling competent, Trust in/acceptance of technology, Socially secure, Socially accepted and Threats to physical safety. Additionally, each factor consisted of multiple variables. From these factors, requirements for Ms. Estelle and her deck’s design, interior and other technical solutions could be established, and suggestions on how to address the factors were developed as simple concepts. These concepts include clear instructions and easily accessible information displayed on an onboard interactive screen, visual and auditory cues indicating when it is safe to board and the addition of secluded areas on board. The project's results showed the importance of considering people’s needs when introducing new technologies to ensure the success of the technology. It also shows the complexity of perceived safety.
Ray-Tracing Simulation and Analysis of Bifacial PV with Multi-Albedo Surfaces
The global shift towards renewable energy has driven the advancement of bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems, which generate electricity from both front and rear surfaces, capturing reflected light from the ground, known as albedo. This rear-side contribution significantly boosts energy yield, particularly when reflective surfaces are optimized. While traditional simulation tools like PVsyst approximate rear-side generation, they often oversimplify albedo's spatial and angular effects, leading to discrepancies with real-world performance. To overcome this, Sunsolve, a ray-tracing simulation tool, offers detailed modeling of light interactions, enabling more accurate predictions of bifacial gains over multi-albedo surfaces. This thesis evaluates Sunsolve Yield’s, further referred to as Sunsolve, accuracy for bifacial PV systems installed at a site in France, where albedo booster sheets of varying widths (3m, 4m, 5m, and 6m) were deployed under specific inverter MPPTs. Real-world data, including inverter outputs, weather conditions, and measured albedo values, served as the reference for validating Sunsolve's predictions. The analysis focuses on: • Gain Yield Analysis, comparing the additional energy from boosters against a grass baseline. • Simulated vs. Actual Comparisons, highlighting booster-induced gains through daily resampled scatter plots. • Error Metric Evaluation using RMSE, SMAPE, R², and RMBE to measure Sunsolve’s predictive accuracy. • Sunny vs. Diffused Day Analysis, revealing variations in simulation accuracy under different irradiance conditions. Results show that Sunsolve effectively captures albedo-induced bifacial gains, especially for larger booster configurations, but discrepancies arise from edge effects, spatial albedo variations, and inverter clipping. The study underscores the importance of site-specific properties and suggests enhancements like rear irradiance sensors and custom material inputs to improve simulation fidelity. Overall, this research validates Sunsolve's capabilities while identifying pathways for optimizing both field setup and simulation accuracy in bifacial PV applications, paving the way for more reliable energy yield predictions in multi albedo environments.
Transitions in-the-making : Towards a performative understanding of sustainability in Swedish aviation
Research on sustainability transitions offers valuable insights into systemic change across societal systems like energy, mobility, and buildings. These systems, heavily reliant on fossil fuels, now face mounting climate consequences and require fundamental reconfigurations in their modes of production, distribution, and consumption. Yet much of the research field treats sustainability as a pre-existing, stable endpoint, often defined through fixed goals, metrics, or policy targets, which risks obscuring the inherently contested and political nature of sustainability itself. In response, this thesis advances a performative understanding of sustainability, viewing it not as a fixed target but as continuously enacted, negotiated, and contested through discursive and material practices. Swedish aviation provides a compelling case to explore this perspective. Whilst celebrated for its environmental leadership, Sweden ranks amongst the highest globally for per capita aviation emissions, highlighting deep tensions between global connectivity and climate responsibility. Drawing on four papers, the thesis examines how competing understandings of sustainability are enacted and contested through transition efforts in Swedish aviation. Paper I reviews mitigation strategies and policy developments. Papers II and III explore how industry actors perform sustainability through narratives and technological innovation. Paper IV analyses the discursive conflict between the aviation industry and the flight-free movement, revealing deeper struggles over what sustainability should mean and require. This thesis offers an empirical account of two competing discourse-coalitions—Green flying and Staying on the ground. Each advances divergent visions, narratives, and practices that shape the trajectory of aviation’s transition. Conceptually and methodologically, it advances a performative, narrative-oriented approach that foregrounds the politics of meaning-making in transitions. This perspective highlights the complexity of sustainability transitions and calls for more reflexive, pluralistic, and open-ended forms of governance—holding space for disagreement, fostering experimentation, and acknowledging that transitions are ever in-the-making.
The Chaitin-Briggs algorithm (CB) is a classic method of register allocation, a compilation sub-process in which variables are assigned to CPU registers. The register allocation has a significant impact on the runtime performance of the compiled program. This study explored the feasibility of applying simulated annealing as an optimization step to improve the results of CB. Synthetic data was generated to simulate real code, and simulated annealing was tested for varying lengths of time on the data to examine its effects on CB’s allocation. The study found that simulated annealing during register allocation can significantly improve the performance of certain programs, while offering a negligible speedup for others. Importantly, even when performance gains were modest, the addition of simulated annealing introduced a notable increase in total compilation time, raising questions about its practicality. The conclusion was that simulated annealing should only be used when the compilation speed is of minimal concern.
Simulating the brain is a vastly complex and computationally intensive task that requires balancing biological realism with computational efficiency. This study explores the suitability of running the Adaptive Exponential Inte-grate-and-Fire (AdEx) model with the NEURON simulator. NEURON is a sophisticated simulator designed for detailed biophysical modelling of multi- compartment models. The Adaptive Exponential Integrate-and-Fire (AdEx) model is a neuron model that provides a computationally efficient abstraction of neuronal activity. This makes AdEx computationally faster than the multi- compartment models native to NEURON, like the Hodgkin-Huxley model. NEST is a highly optimized simulator designed for abstract point neuron models, like AdEx. Separate experiments were run using AdEx and Hodgkin- Huxley in both NEURON and NEST. The performance of the AdEx imple- mentation in NEURON was measured using numerical accuracy, spike train similarity, and simulation runtime over a variety of different neuron samples with different levels of connectivity. Results show that NEURON is suitable for running AdEx on smaller populations of neurons. However, the magnitude of errors in numerical accuracy suggest issues in the implementation which warrant further investigation.
Computational Optimal Transport via Operator Splitting — Analysis, Implementation, and Applications
This thesis develops scalable and theoretically grounded algorithms for optimal transport (OT) using operator splitting. The central theme is to exploit the structural properties of OT and the constraints imposed by modern hardware to derive algorithms that mitigate key implementation bottlenecks in large-scale applications. The thesis is based on four main works. First, the Douglas–Rachford splitting method is applied to unregularized OT. Through careful splitting design, we obtain an algorithm that combines favorable global convergence rates while being well-suited for GPU computations. Moreover, the approach avoids hyperparameters that often cause numerical instability in other OT methods, and is particularly well-suited for low-precision arithmetic, now ubiquitous in machine learning applications. The theoretical guarantees are complemented by numerical benchmarks, demonstrating that the algorithm is faster than the state-of-the-art on a range of problem instances. Second, we extend this framework to handle a broad class of regularizers, including group lasso and quadratic regularization. The algorithm derived in the first work is readily adapted to this class, and we show that the analysis and the GPU implementation generalize to this setting. Additional tight local convergence guarantees are also added. Numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of the algorithm, achieving 10–100x faster computation times than the state-of-the-art for a wide range of problem instances. Third, we introduce an asynchronous three-operator splitting scheme for trans- portation problems with nonlinear but differentiable costs, with the Gromov–Wasserstein problem as a special case. This algorithm removes synchronization bottlenecks by reusing gradients—a feature particularly useful when gradient evaluations dominate overall complexity. Its analysis extends classical operator-splitting theory to asynchronous settings in a novel manner, and these results are complemented by guarantees for the non-convex case. Applying the resulting algorithm to several real-world problems demonstrates that the method is highly efficient while yielding accurate solutions. Finally, we develop additional local convergence guarantees that account for the sparsity structure of OT solutions. Under mild assumptions, the algorithm identifies the correct sparsity pattern in finitely many iterations, after which faster linear convergence dominates. Moreover, we relate the local rate to graph-theoretical properties of the solution. This analysis not only refines the theoretical understanding of splitting methods for OT but also suggests principled strategies for stepsize tuning. Taken together, these contributions advance the theoretical understanding of splitting methods for optimal transport, while improving their practical usability, enabling their application to a variety of OT problems at greater scales.
