Visual Localization is a key task in autonomous systems and robotics, consisting of the estimation of the pose of a camera, given the image it is capturing. Despite different approaches exist, they always rely on comparing the query image to reference images with known poses to find correspondences between observed objects. To improve efficiency, only a subset of reference images are matched, determined by image retrieval pipelines. Image retrieval methods adopted in the literature are usually trained on different tasks with looser retrieval objectives, such as Visual Place Recognition. This work studies the impact of retrieval algorithms in Visual Localization, focusing on the specific requirements for the task. Firstly, the ideal requirements that image retrieval methods should meet are determined, replacing the retrieval stage with an image selection based on different criteria, such as high covisibility or spatial closeness; comparing localization results varying the selection criterion, insights on the ideal characteristics are drawn, while also setting loose upper bounds on Visual Localization performances for actual retrieval methods. Secondly, current retrieval methods are benchmarked, to determine the state of the art on the task, and to evaluate the performance gap with respect to the ideal bounds set. Lastly, small variations of existing retrieval methods are tested, such as re-ranking retrieved images, trying to determine the magnitude of future work needed to improve localization performances. The experiments highlight the importance of high covisibility between query and reference images, which is often related to their pose similarity. Furthermore, upper bounds correctly localize 20% of dataset images that actual retrievals are unable to, showing that the current models limit Visual Localization and tailoring is needed. The small pipeline variations tested reduce the performance gap, highlighting the viability of minor adjustments such as fine-tuning. Overall, this work shows the retrieval requirements for Visual Localization, setting the research directions to tailor models for the task to remove the retrieval bottleneck from the pipeline.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique widely used in medical diagnostics to provide high-resolution human body images. The image resolution depends on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which is proportional to the square of the radio frequency magnetic field |B1|. Many studies have proposed using additional passive devices inside the birdcage of MRI to strengthen |B1|, such as using high permittivity layers, local resonators, etc. Among these studies, a cylindrical resonator with a radius of 48 mm as a local resonator has already proven effective for wrist imaging. However, when the resonator aperture is enlarged to accommodate larger body parts (e.g., a hand), |B1| in its central region decays significantly, and the radial field becomes non-uniform. To address this shortcoming, a circularly slotted endcap (CSE) and an interval field suppressor (IFS) that can be integrated on a wide-aperture cylindrical resonator are proposed. The wide aperture resonator with these two structural add-ons can sufficiently enhance |B1| and its homogeneity. Full-wave CST simulations of two case studies are carried out for resonators with inner radii of 104 mm and 130 mm, over twice the original design for the wrist. With CSE and IFS, the central |B1| increases by 15.5% and 25.6% relative to the bare 104 mm and 130 mm resonator, respectively, while maintaining radial field inhomogeneity below 5%. Compared with a standalone birdcage coil, the integrated assemblies (cylindrical resonator + CSE + IFS) can achieve a 141.9% and 99.4% increase in central |B1| for the two radii cases. These two case studies show that the CSE and IFS provide a general, scalable way of enhancing |B1| and uniformity in large-aperture cylindrical resonators, extending their use to clinical imaging of other larger body parts than the wrist, such as hands. The design is compatible with standard hardware and can be fabricated with low-cost materials, laying the groundwork for future in-vivo studies and clinical translation.
As wireless communication systems continue to evolve toward higher capacity and greater flexibility, traditional fixed antenna deployments have become increasingly inadequate for coping with dynamic user distributions and complex propagation environments. To address this challenge, movable antenna systems have been proposed, introducing an additional spatial degree of freedom for system optimization, i.e., the position of each antenna element is movable. This paper mainly studies the optimization of movable antenna arrays in a multi-user MIMO system based on realistic ray tracing channels, aiming to improve system and rate performance through machine learning-based algorithms. Given the high-dimensional, non-convex, and derivative-free nature of the optimization problem, this work adopts two intelligent optimization techniques: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). A simulation framework combining the field-response channel modeling and deterministic ray tracing was established in MATLAB. Based on this framework, the two-dimensional positions of antenna elements were optimized to maximize the overall system throughput. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to fixed sparse or half-wavelength arrays, both PSO and GA significantly improve the achievable sum rate under various user distributions, array sizes, and multipath conditions. This study confirms the effectiveness of machine learning-based algorithms in addressing complex wireless system optimization problems and provides a foundation for future research directions, such as integrating real-time prediction or reinforcement learning techniques.
Energy consumption is increasing, and with it comes an increase in Greenhouse Gas emissions, which threaten humanity. It is pressing to decrease consumption through an increase in the efficiency of all energy-consuming systems. Tighter regulations on heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) emissions in the European Union for a not-so-close future imply that all the systems in this means of transport need to be improved. One of these systems is wheel hub bearings. In previous studies, it has been shown that by simply changing the grease choice, either by varying the thickener type or oil blend, energy losses of bearings can be reduced, thus improving the efficiency of HDV as a system. Finding a methodology capable of such evaluation is part of the process of optimising this line contact tribological system. This thesis aimed at mechanically validate and improve an already existing Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearing test rig and fully develop the motor control and safety algorithms, sensor integration and respective data acquisition, and data analysis algorithms. Tests were performed as part of the machine's continuous evaluation and improvement process. Concurrently, a methodology was developed to evaluate the energy losses of Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearings under different loads and drive cycle conditions with different lubricating grease formulations. The imposed test conditions were chosen to align with the conditions experienced by wheel hub bearings of heavy-duty vehicles. The results indicate that grease choice formulations greatly influence energy consumption and that friction energy can vary by 10.1% under drive cycle conditions depending on the grease choice. Recommendations for future work are given to improve the machine and the methodology and pursue more tests to better understand the tribological phenomena of line contact bearings and their impact on HDV wheel hub bearings.
Effect of microstructure on pre- and post-punching fatigue behavior of hot-rolled thick-plate advanced high-strength steel
Advanced high-strength steels (AHSSs) are crucial for achieving superior strength-to-weight ratios in automotive applications, replacing traditional high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels. However, employing AHSSs in thick-plate configurations, e.g., heavy-duty truck chassis, presents challenges due to the potential mechanical property degradation caused by necessary sheet shearing processes, such as hole punching and trimming. This study examines the role of microstructure on the pre- and post-punching fatigue behavior of three AHSSs (800CP, 700MC, and 700MCPlus), each with distinct microstructural constituents but comparable yield and tensile strengths, and compares them with a conventional HSLA steel (500MC) commonly used in heavy-duty truck chassis. Additionally, the impact of different punching geometries on the post-punching fatigue performance of 500MC is assessed.Comprehensive microstructure characterization, tensile testing, high cycle fatigue (HCF) testing pre- and post-punching, fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) testing, and neutron residual stress measurements are performed. The results show that punching significantly alters the microstructure, leading to microstructure refinement, sub-grain formation, defect creation, residual stresses, and the development of a work-hardened shear-affected zone around the punched edge, along with a rough fracture zone within the punched hole. At higher applied stresses and fewer load cycles (105 cycles), the HCF performance is primarily determined by the fatigue crack growth resistance of the pre-punched microstructure. In this regime, 700MCPlus, with the slowest FCGR, exhibits the highest post-punching fatigue strength, while the other steels with similar FCGR show nearly identical post-punching fatigue strength. Similarly, different punching conditions of 500MC exhibit similar post-punching fatigue strength in this regime, regardless of the punching condition. The investigation into the fatigue crack propagation mechanisms reveals that the enhanced performance of 700MCPlus is due to its unique texture, which limits slip activity, and the presence of martensite at grain boundaries, contributing to crack deflection. These findings underscore the potential for optimizing FCGR behavior through texture design and the dispersion of hard constituents. At lower applied stresses and fewer load cycles (106 - 2 × 106 cycles), however, post-punching fatigue performance is significantly influenced by the changes induced during punching. In homogeneous microstructures (e.g., ferrite in 500MC), surface roughness and, more importantly, residual stress are key factors affecting post-punching fatigue performance. Fatigue cracks initiate at mid-thickness parallel to the punching direction, which corresponds to the location of maximum measured tensile residual stresses, with increases in the residual stress leading to greater reductions in fatigue strength. Conversely, in more heterogeneous microstructures, strain localization plays a critical role when a significant strength difference exists between microconstituents (e.g., martensite and ferrite in 700MCPlus). Strain localization promotes sub-grain formation, reducing the local threshold stress intensity factor range (∆Kth) and facilitating crack initiation. In microstructures with smaller strength differences (e.g., ferrite and bainite in 800CP and 700MC), sub-grains, along with surface roughness and residual stress, significantly contribute to the reduction in post-punching fatigue strength. These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying punching-induced fatigue performance degradation, offering potential strategies for optimizing the fatigue properties of AHSSs for new applications.
Case study on SAF emissions from air travel considering emissions modeling impact
The environmental impact of air travel, largely driven by fossil-fuel consumption, remains a critical subject of debate. Addressing this challenge requires immediately adopting sustainable practices to mitigate its environmental footprint. While hydrogen and hybrid-electric propulsion technologies show promise for the future, current efforts focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) as a viable near-term solution to reduce aviation emissions while ensuring compatibility with existing aviation infrastructure. This paper examines the environmental impact of air travel, focusing on the emissions associated with conventional fuel and SAF. Using two methodologies, namely the subsonic fuel flow method (SF2) and an improved version of it, the emissions corrected subsonic fuel flow method (EC-SF2), non-CO2 emissions trends are analyzed along a flight trajectory from Stockholm to Bordeaux. The comparison between the two methods underscores the importance of accurate emission modeling, particularly for SAF correction on emission index. The SF2 method reveals that SAF fuels with higher calorific value than conventional fuel increased total HC and CO emissions while decreasing NOx emissions. Conversely, the EC-SF2 method resulted in a more homogeneous emissions reduction trend. Our proposed methodology, which corrects both fuel flow and emission index based on SAF-specific data, could, therefore, offer a more reliable estimation of emissions behavior for SAF. These findings highlight the sensitivity of emissions modeling on environmental assessment.QC 20250218REFMA
A latent class dynamic discrete choice model for travel behaviour and scheduling
In travel behaviour modelling, latent class models are used to represent underlying discrete groupings of behavioural preferences. The paper presents a latent class extension of a dynamic discrete choice model (DDCM) and applies the model to the problem of activity demand generation and scheduling. The DDCM is a recursive multinomial logit model where agents make sequential decisions in time, maximizing the expected future utility of their decisions in a random utility maximization framework. It generates activities and their associated travel within a full day schedule, endogenously respecting agents' inherent time-space constraints. The latent class DDCM builds on the base model by representing heterogeneous lifestyle preferences. A specification of the model is estimated on a Stockholm travel survey and uses age, income level, gender, car ownership and presence of children in the household as classifying variables. The models result in classes which primarily represent modality styles, finding car-, transit- and bike-primary behavioural groups as well as a multimodal group, each linked with different socio-demographic characteristics. The models improve over non-latent class reference models and provide insight into the structure of heterogeneity in travel behaviour preferences in Stockholm.Part of ISBN 978-1853397233QC 20250304</p
Toward systematic finite element reconstructions of accidents involving vulnerable road users
To combat the global fatality rates among vulnerable road users (VRUs), prioritizing research on head injury mechanisms and human tolerance levels in vehicle-to-VRU traffic collisions is imperative. A foundational step for VRU injury prevention is often to create virtual reconstructions of real-world collisions. Thus, efficient and trustworthy reconstruction tools are needed to make use of recent advances in accident data collection routines and Finite Element (FE) human body modeling. In this study, a comprehensive and streamlined reconstruction methodology, starting from a video-recorded accident, has been developed. The workflow, that includes state-of-the-art tools for personalization of human body models (HBMs) and vehicles, was evaluated and demonstrated through 20 real-world VRU collision cases. The FE models successfully replicated the vehicle damage that was observed in on-scene photographs of the post-impact vehicle, as well as impact kinematics captured in dash cam or surveillance recordings. The findings highlight how video evidence can considerably narrow down the number of plausible impact scenarios and raise the credibility of virtual reconstructions of real-world VRU collision events. More importantly, this study demonstrates how, with an efficient and systematic methodology, FE might be feasible also for large-scale VRU accident datasets
On the Accuracy of Articulated Robots : A Comprehensive Approach to Evaluate and Improve Robot Accuracy for Contact Applications
Traditionally, robots have primarily been used in tasks with minimalor no contact with the environment, such as material handling and painting. The articulated robot, with its flexibility, adaptability, affordability, andlarge workspace, is well-suited for a wide range of contact applications requiringcontinuous interaction with the environment. However, the inherent lowstructural stiffness of articulated robots can lead to significant deformationunder external loads, which, in turn, affects the accuracy of the end-effector’spositioning. Therefore, improving accuracy is crucial for the widespread adoptionof robotic systems in high-precision contact applications. This research investigates the impact of load and motion on the positioningaccuracy of articulated robots in contact applications. The analysisperformed on quasi-static deflections reveals that traditional static calibrationmethods can underestimate actual positioning errors by neglecting thecombined effects of load and motion. To address this, a model-based quasi-static compliance calibration methodis proposed. This method leverages a joint stiffness model to estimate andcompensate for robot deformation. Experimental results demonstrate significantaccuracy improvements, with positioning error reductions ranging from60% to 90%, depending on the robot, application, workspace, and load conditions. To enhance the practical applicability of the method, a balance amongaccuracy, computational efficiency, and ease of implementation is prioritized. The quasi-static approach results in a suitable compromise between accuracylevel and resource requirements. To further contribute to mainstream calibration accuracy improvements inindustrial settings, this work demonstrates the feasibility of transferring jointstiffness parameters, identified through quasi-static analysis, among identicalrobots sharing similar tasks, loads, and operational spaces. This transferbasedcompensation approach was compared to conventional compensationapproaches to assess its effectiveness in minimizing load-induced errors. Finally, to effectively evaluate robot performance in contact applications,a comprehensive set of testing conditions is proposed. These conditions considerfactors such as load, velocity, directionality, and workspace coverage, which can deliver a more rigorous assessment of robot capabilities.Future research directions include investigating the interplay betweenquasi-static and dynamic effects, exploring advanced modeling techniques thatcombine physics-based and data-driven approaches to address residual errors, and developing robust performance evaluation procedures for complex roboticsystems in emerging contact applications.
