Practical considerations for detection of squeezed light

    No full text
This thesis investigates the generation and detection of squeezed light with a focus on mitigating state of polarization (SOP) mismatch between squeezed light and local oscillator (LO) field. The consequence of this mismatch is a lowered measured squeezing level. A polarisation control system was implemented to mitigate this effect and two algorithms for automated feedback control were examined: parallel gradient descent (PGD) and particle swarm algorithm (PSA). In stable operating conditions, PGD performed better with an average convergence time of 33±7.7 seconds. In comparison PSA tended to have a slower convergence of 64 ±28 seconds in stable conditions, but proved more resilient to unstable operating conditions. By implementing polarisation control into our squeezing setup, the squeezing efficiency improved by 50% and a decrease of 83% in standard deviation between measurements was observed. The scheme also has applications in the NQCIS infrastructure where a similar drifting polarisation state leads to a lowered quantum key transmission rate

Data-Driven Transit Scheduling: Statistical Methods to Minimize Passenger Wait Times

    No full text
Punctuality in bus operations is key to reducing passenger wait times and improving the appeal of public transport. This study presents a data-driven method to optimize bus schedules for Route 16 in Linköping, Sweden. Historical real-time and static bus traffic data (Sept 2021–Dec 2023) was retrieved and labelled using temporal and spatial groupings. Using both total and incremental departure delays, monthly clustering was performed via K-means++. Thereafter, statistical summaries were calculated and used in a grid search over scaled adjustments. New schedules were obtained using unseen data (Jan-June 2024), and optimal configurations were selected based on improvements in schedule adherence, with significance assessed via pooled-variance z-tests. The best strategy, adjustments using incremental delay data at the 50th percentile with s = 0.4, raised on-time performance from ∼ 68% to ∼ 73% (±0.21 pp, p < 0.01). The optimal method for weekends raised the performance to over 80%, reaching ¨Ostg¨otatrafikern’s punctuality goal. Gains varied by stop and time: some saw up to 33% improvement, others none. Morning rush-hour improved by 13% and night services by 2.8%. Percentile-based, stop-specific adjustments proved effective, while the choice of clustering scheme had limited influence on schedule adherence. Future research should incorporate a test dataset to more robustly estimate the performance gains of the best methods. To derive insights that are applicable in real-world settings, the approach must also be extended to include multiple transit routes. Additionally, there is potential to integrate passenger experience metrics into similar analyses to provide a more comprehensive evaluation

Integrating Syntactic Structure in Transformer Language Models : A Study of Part-of-Speech Augmentation

    No full text
In modern natural language processing tasks, the transformer architecture has set significant benchmarks across common language modeling metrics. Transformer-based language models typically process linguistic information implicitly through self-attention mechanisms, offering little insight into linguistic priors such as syntactic structure. This thesis investigates the enhancement of transformer performance via explicit incorporation of Part of-Speech (POS), a form of syntactic knowledge. Specifically, we examine different methods of fusing tokens with POS in the embedding layer to provide a computationally inexpensive injection method. We amend a transformer-decoder with dense POS embeddings and compare it against a baseline model on the WikiText-2 dataset in terms of perplexity and next-token prediction. Our experiments indicate that integrating POS information through concatenation and projection leads to statistically significant improvement, decreasing perplexity by approximately 15.1% (from 42.70 to 36.26) and increasing next-token prediction accuracy by 0.69 percentage points (from 55.18% to 55.86%) on the WikiText-2 test set. We find the concatenation and projection method particularly effective, outperforming simple element-wise addition. We discuss the findings, linking the performance gains to the role of POS tags as an inductive bias within an information-theoretic framework. Furthermore, we provide methodological details for aligning tags with subword tokens and acknowledge limitations concerning model scale and tagger accuracy. This research provides evidence and implementation insights for incorporating explicit syntactic knowledge through lightweight embedding fusion into decoder-only transformer architectures

This thesis work investigates the possibility of 3-D printing an ionization chamber for use in the field of microdosimetry. The aim is to achieve a proof of concept with a detector printed with a combination of conductive and non-conductive materials. The design can then be coupled with existing electronics to provide radiation measurements. In addition to printing a working detector, the work aims to suggest potential design changes in geometry and dimensioning. A spherical detector was designed and printed using PLA and Conductive PLA filaments. The diameter of the active region is approximately 5 cm, while the entire detector with stem is 11 cm tall, with a wall thickness is 3 mm. The printed detector was equipped with a BNC cable and banana connectors to be coupled with electronics. Measurements were performed with the detector at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, with the goal of using the variance method for determining dose mean lineal energy at the micrometer scale. Under irradiation from a cesium-137 source, the variance method gave a dose mean lineal energy of 0.685 ± 0.055 keV/μm for cesium-137 in a simulated site diameter of 53 μm. This is in line with literature values obtained with commercial detectors. The dose rate was also calculated to validate the performance of the detector. This study will give a basis for the use of such 3-D printed models in the field of micro- and nanodosimetry.

Perihelion Shifts of Various Celestial Bodies : Using Newtonian Mechanics and General Relativity

    No full text
This report focuses on one of the most important tests for the validity of the theory ofgeneral relativity, more precisely the problem of Mercury’s anomalous perihelion preces-sion. This problem, as well as a few possible solutions for it, are introduced and describedin further detail in the introduction. Four of these solutions, which in this report arecalled the Newtonian solution, the relativistic method, Brown’s method and a numericalsolution in form of a simulation, are then described further in the investigation. TheNewtonian and relativistic methods are derived after a short introduction to general rel-ativity. Subsequently, each of the four methods is used to determine the perihelion shiftof a few celestial bodies, after which the results from each method are compared to eachother and to observed values for the shift.

Simulating the Shallow Water Equations with an SBP-SAT scheme

    No full text
This thesis focuses on the derivation and numerical solution of the shallow water equations (SWE), which is a system of partial differential equations used to model fluid flow in situations where the horizontal length scales are much larger than the vertical depth. Since the SWE generally cannot be solved analytically, a high-order numerical method is introduced. Specifically, the Summation-By-Parts (SBP) framework combined with the Simultaneous Approximation Term (SAT) technique is presented and implemented to solve the equations with accuracy and stability. The scheme is implemented in Python. Different test cases were used to analyze the accuracy and stability of the implemented scheme. It was concluded that the scheme worked well for basic wave behaviors, while it struggled with more challenging scenarios involving complex water flow and shocks

Modelling Autonomous Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) For KTH Campus

    No full text
This thesis explores the network design and simulation of an Autonomous Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) system for the KTH Royal Institute of Technology campus in Stockholm, Sweden. The study addresses current mobility challenges within the campus, particularly to the Albanova campus, which has limited accessibility. Using a data-driven approach, the research integrates e-scooter trip data and SL smart data for public transport to construct an O-D matrix characterizing mobility demands within the campus. A simulation framework was developed using VIPsim, allowing for the evaluation of multiple dispatch and routing algorithms under varying fleet sizes and demand scenarios. Five algorithms were tested across morning and afternoon peak periods, with performance assessed based on key indicators such as average waiting time, vehicle utilization, and passenger service rates. Results show that DRT can significantly improve campus mobility, offering a flexible and efficient transportation alternative, particularly in serving the Albanova campus. During morning peak hours, 15 vehicles were enough to achieve reasonable waiting times, while only 10 vehicles were needed for afternoon peak hours. However, in the afternoon peak hour, 10 vehicles were not enough to minimize waiting time according to user preference of less than 5 minutes; therefore, increasing vehicle capacity is necessary. In terms of algorithm performance, the Max Pass algorithm, which assigns vehicles based on maximizing the number of passengers, performed best in both the morning and afternoon peak hours compared to the Min Max algorithm, which assigns vehicles based on minimizing waiting time.

    No full text
While being one of the least digitalized sectors, the construction industry is facing increasing demands for more efficient information management and digital collaboration. This master’sthesis explores how semantic technologies, in the form of ontologies and knowledge graphs, can support more structured, traceable and interoperable data management in construction projects. Through a combination of literature review and semi-structured interviews with both industry professionals and researchers, the study analyzes the potential to implement these technologies. The findings show that these tools offer concrete opportunities for improved decision support, knowledge reuse, automated compliance checking and more efficient project management. Simultaneously, several challenges related to organizational culture, leadership, competence and lack of standardized processes emerge. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of understanding these technologies not merely as technical solutions but also as part of a broader organizational transformation

    No full text

    No full text
