The difference in practice papers and scholarship: We publish the latter
The differences between regularly published practice papers and evidence-based Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) manuscripts as preferred publications are outlined and discussed in this editorial. By examining the literature and backstory of SoTL, clear guidelines for well-designed research studies supported by evidence provide compelling reasons for SoTL papers to contribute to international knowledge, change thinking, advance practice in higher education and meet the aims of scholarly academic journal. The types of evidence that can be used are described, and a practical checklist for authors to benchmark their manuscript against SoTL principles is also offered as a hands-on tool for improving manuscript submissions. Studies based on evidence and scholarship establish credible, valid, and current knowledge through defensible theoretical frameworks and systematic methodology. Scholarly studies not only contribute to knowledge, improve practice, advance pedagogy, and inform policy but also drive significant change in international higher education contexts
Higher dietary nitrate intake is associated with lower likelihood of first clinical diagnosis of central nervous system demyelination in Australian women
Dietary nitrate is a precursor to nitric oxide, for which plausible mechanisms exist for both beneficial and detrimental influences in first clinical diagnosis of central nervous system demyelination (FCD), a common precursor to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether dietary nitrate has any role in FCD onset is unclear. We tested associations between nitrate intake from food sources (plant, vegetable, animal, processed meat, and unprocessed meat) and likelihood of FCD. We used data from the Ausimmune Study (264 cases, 474 controls) and logistic regression with full propensity score matching. In females, higher nitrate intake from plant-based foods (odds ratio [OR] per 60 mg/day = 0.50; 95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.31, 0.81; p = \u3c 0.01) and vegetables (OR per 60 mg/day = 0.39; 95 % CI 0.22, 0.70; p = \u3c 0.01), but not other sources, was statistically significantly associated with lower likelihood of FCD. In males, no associations were found between any source of nitrate intake and likelihood of FCD. Our results support further research to explore a possible beneficial role for plant-derived nitrate in people at higher risk of MS
Molecular testing of lung cancer in Australia: Consensus best practice recommendations from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in collaboration with the Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia
Molecular testing plays a critical role in guiding optimal treatment decisions for lung cancer patients across a variety of clinical settings. While guidelines for biomarker testing exist in other jurisdictions, to date no best practice guidelines have been developed for the Australian setting. To address this need, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia collaborated with the Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia to identify state-based pathologists, oncologists and consumer representatives to develop consensus best practice recommendations. Sixteen recommendations were established encompassing appropriate biomarkers, lung cancer subtype, tumour stage, specimen types, assay selection and quality assurance protocols that can inform and standardise best practice in molecular testing of lung cancer. These multidisciplinary evidence-based recommendations are designed to standardise and enhance molecular testing practices for lung cancers and should help ensure laboratories provide high-quality molecular testing of lung cancer for all Australians, including those from regional or remote communities
Patterns of dietary fatty acids and fat spreads in relation to blood pressure, lipids and insulin resistance in young adults: A repeat cross-sectional study
Background/Objectives: Determining whether dietary fatty acids and the use of fat spreads are associated with cardiovascular risk factors is difficult due to the multicollinearity of fatty acids and the consumption of multiple spread types. Methods: We applied clustering methodologies using data on 31 different fatty acids and 5 different types of fat spreads (high fat: butter, blended butters, and margarines; lower fat: polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) and investigated associations with blood pressure, serum lipid patterns and insulin resistance in the Raine Study Gen2 participants in Western Australia, at 20 and 22 years of age. Results: Amongst n = 785 participants, there were eight distinct clusters formed from the fatty acid data and ten distinct clusters formed from the fat spread data. Male participants had higher systolic blood pressure than females (122.2 ± 11.6 mmHg versus 111.7 ± 10.3, p \u3c 0.001 at age 20 and 123.4 ± 10.6 versus 113.9 ± 9.8, p \u3c 0.001 at age 22). Males consuming exclusively butter as a fat spread had significantly higher SBP (+4.3 mmHg) compared with males not using spreads. Males consuming a high intake of margarine had significantly higher SBP (+6.6 mmHg), higher DBP (+3.4 mmHg) and higher triglycerides (+30.5%). Amongst females, four patterns of fatty acid intake were associated with lower levels of HDL cholesterol compared with the low-saturated-fat/high n-3 reference group (p = 0.017 after adjustment for relevant confounders, range = −10.1% to −16.0%, p = 0.017). There were no associations between clusters and HOMA-IR or other serum lipids for males or females. Conclusions: Compared to using no fat spreads, amongst males, a high intake of margarine was characterised by higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure and higher serum triglycerides, whilst the use of butter also was associated with higher SBP. Diets low in n-3s or high in trans fats were associated with sub-optimal HDL levels amongst females
Persistence of contested value cocreation practices
The climate crisis and other global challenges make it clear that not only are new value cocreation practices (VCPs) needed, but some current VCPs must be discontinued. Prior service literature assumes that VCPs can be disrupted by reforming the institutions that govern them. However, empirical observations show that VCPs may persist even when targeted by institutional work, and recent organizational research points to contested practices that continue to be enacted even when challenged or criticized. To understand this phenomenon in value cocreation, we conducted an embedded case study of exotic pet-keeping—a set of VCPs that continue despite intervention efforts. Our findings reveal that when exotic pet-keepers became reflexive of contestation in the symbolic elements of their VCPs, they modified their material elements, leading to four types of contested VCP reconfiguration. Two of these types—conforming and confining—resulted in the dissipation of the contested VCPs, while the other two—converting and circumventing—led to their persistence. We contribute to service research by introducing the concept of contested VCPs and developing a typology and a theoretical framework of their reconfiguration. Our work offers practitioners and policymakers a new approach to designing interventions to discontinue VCPs and evaluating their outcomes
Pleural infection: Controversies on the therapeutic strategies
Purpose of review Management of pleural infection remains heterogeneous worldwide. This review highlights current controversies in therapeutic strategies for pleural infection, focusing particularly on recent studies and their implications. Recent findings The introduction of intrapleural therapy combining alteplase [a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)] and deoxyribonuclease (DNase) has revolutionized treatment practices, though the optimal delivery and dosing regimen is an area of active investigation. Variations to simplify administration protocols and/or to lower the required drug doses have been published. Most were exploratory studies, but the variations showed maintained therapeutic efficacy. Whether intrapleural alteplase/DNase or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is superior is a topic of debate. Retrospective comparative analyses between the two revealed no clear benefits on all-cause mortality from either approach. Pilot randomized trials have been published and further full-scale, head-to-head trials are underway. Summary Effective management of pleural infection involves adequate pleural drainage and appropriate antibiotic use. This review outlines the current evidence (and its limitations) and highlights knowledge gaps in optimizing the therapeutic strategies
Rapid weight loss across combat sports and the relationships between methods and magnitude
This study examined rapid weight loss (RWL) habits across combat sports (CS) and how common usage of different methods was related to the magnitude of RWL. Competitors (N = 256) from CS including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay thai/kickboxing (MT/KB), wrestling, mixed martial arts (MMA), judo, taekwondo, and karate participated in the study. Athletes completed an online survey which included questions on their regular weight loss habits, including magnitudes of weight loss over different time periods and types of methods utilised. Athletes typically started losing weight in their early 20s and engaged in RWL on average three times a year. Magnitudes of weight loss were greater in MT/KB and MMA than other cCS examined (d between 0.63 and 1.54). Wrestlers demonstrated higher prevalence of skipping meals or fasting than other CS (d between 0.7 and 1.29). Athletes at higher competitive levels engaged in larger magnitudes of RWL (d between 0.49 and 0.57). The usage of methods of body fluid manipulation such as fluid restriction, water loading, and sauna were associated with greater amounts of weight loss within 2 weeks and 24 h of weighing in (d between 0.36 and 0.45). Findings indicate that larger weight cuts are linked to strategies involving higher risk, such as sauna, and may be more common among athletes who begin RWL practices at a younger age. Use of certain high-risk methods were associated with increased likelihood of disordered eating behaviours. To reduce reliance on these practices, practitioners and regulators should emphasise the use of smaller weight cuts and to begin losing weight further out from competition

The applications of the most cutting-edge artificial intelligence in AM and surface functional modification are also presented. This article also explores the application of AM in various medical specialties, such as orthopedics, dentistry, cardiology, and neurosurgery, demonstrating its potential to solve complex clinical challenges and advance patient-centered healthcare solutions. Furthermore, it highlights the critical roles of AM in shaping the future of medical implant manufacturing. The optimistic outlook on the bright future of AM in medical metals delivers personalized, high-performance medical implants that improve patient treatment outcomes and well-being
Summarizing attributable factors and evaluating risk of bias of Mendelian randomization studies for Alzheimer’s dementia and cognitive status: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: No effective treatment is available to delay or reverse the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s dementia (AD). Mild cognitive impairment, a clinical state between normal aging and AD, may offer the proper window for AD intervention and treatment. This systematic review aimed to summarize evidence from Mendelian randomization (MR) studies exploring factors attributable to AD and related cognitive status and to assess its credibility. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library to identify MR studies investigating the associations between any factor and AD and related cognitive status. The risk of bias in MR studies was evaluated using nine signaling questions tailored to identify potential biases based on the STROBE-MR guidelines. Results: A total of 125 eligible publications were examined, including 106 AD-related MR studies reporting 674 records and 28 cognition-related MR studies reporting 141 records. We identified 185 unique causal risk factors for AD and 49 for cognitive status. More than half of the MR studies reporting AD or cognitive status outcomes exhibited poor methodological quality, with a high risk of bias observed in 59% of the AD-related studies and 64% of the cognitive-related studies. Conclusions: This systematic review summarized modifiable factors and omics signatures, providing a database of MR studies on AD and related cognitive status. The evaluation of bias risk in MR studies serves to raise awareness and improve overall quality. A critical appraisal checklist for assessing the risk of bias may pave the way for the development of a standardized tool. The autonomy paradox, working from home and psychosocial hazards
This article investigates the experience of knowledge workers in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, who worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic to understand their exposure to psychosocial hazards, specifically: workload and work pace; the work-home interface and social isolation. We explored how the increased autonomy afforded by working from home fitted with workers’ actual experience during the pandemic. Drawing on interviews with 33 NSW remote workers and 19 line-managers conducted in early 2021, this article argues that the increased autonomy afforded to employees by remote work is paradoxical. Many interviewees worked longer hours and experienced work intensification, as well as an unwelcome blurring of the work and home spheres. The phenomenon of greater work output was bound up in the trust between workers and line management. Further, interviewees experienced a sense of social isolation. The potential for work intensification, blurring, and social isolation all featured in the working from home literature before COVID-19. This article provides a novel application of the ‘autonomy paradox’ concept, by integrating it within the framework of psychosocial workplace hazards
