The association of body composition and musculoskeletal characteristics with police recruit performance: A cross-sectional study
Objective: Exploring how body composition and musculoskeletal characteristics relate to physical performance may provide insights for optimising training outcomes. We explored if body composition and musculoskeletal characteristics were associated with tactical and cardiorespiratory performance. Methods: A cross-sectional study of police recruits within the Western Australia Police Force was performed. Total and regional body composition was assessed using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry, with the tibial morphology and mid-thigh muscle cross-sectional area assessed using peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography. Tactical performance was measured with a Physical Performance Evaluation, and cardiorespiratory fitness assessed using the Beep Test. Variables that were significant in univariate regressions progressed to generalised linear models, assessing relationships between measures and performance outcomes. Results: Twenty-seven recruits aged 21–51 years (40.7% female) participated. Better tactical performance was associated with lower body fat percentage (p \u3c 0.001), lower body mass index (p \u3c 0.001), higher appendicular muscle mass (p = 0.005), and a lower proximal (66%) tibia polar cross-section moment of inertia (p = 0.007). Better cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with lower body fat percentage (p = 0.004), higher appendicular lean mass (p = 0.006), a lower proximal (66%) tibia polar cross-section moment of inertia (p = 0.005), and a higher mid-thigh muscle cross-sectional area (p \u3c 0.001). Conclusions: Various body composition and musculoskeletal characteristics are associated with tactical performance and cardiorespiratory fitness in WA police recruits. Lower body fat percentage and higher appendicular muscle mass were associated with both better cardiorespiratory fitness and tactical performance, highlighting the potential relevance of these characteristics in preparing police recruits for operational duties
The impact of configuration management decisions on firm resilience: Integrating resource configuration, operational flexibility, and collaborative supply chain strategies
Global competition requires the company\u27s appropriate rules and policies. The company is trying to build strong, firm resilience to maintain sustainability. The research aims to analyze the influence of management configuration decisions on company resilience through the integration of resource configuration, operational flexibility, and collaboration in the supply chain. This study was conducted on 462 manufacturing companies in Indonesia that were experiencing changes in operational systems and global competitive pressures. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) method. The research results show that management configuration decisions influence resource configuration and supply chain collaboration integration but do not directly influence operational flexibility. Resource configuration is proven to increase operational flexibility and supply chain collaboration integration, which in turn strengthens company resilience. Operational flexibility also plays an important role in supporting the integration of supply chain collaboration and company resilience in the face of external disruptions. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the development of a tough and practical supply chain strategy for management in building an organization that is adaptive to disruption
Theory and technology of enhanced coal seam gas production by integrated drilling, hydraulic punching and fracturing in coal mine: Part 2 technology
To enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of coal seam gas extraction in coal mines, this study introduces an integrated approach combining drilling, hydraulic punching, and fracturing technologies. This method optimizes drilling media tailored to specific coal seams and fine-tunes technical parameters during drilling and permeability improvement processes. Furthermore, it clarifies the relationships among the coal breaking rate, discharge of drill cuttings, jet velocity, rotation speed, and displacement. This ensures precise and effective permeability improvement in both soft and hard coal formations. To implement this technology, a set of high-performance drilling tool with a large inner diameter, high pressure resistance, and superior sealing capabilities has been developed. Consisting of a water braid, drill pipe and hydraulic ejector, this tool meets the requirements of substantial displacement and high pump pressure. Field test results demonstrate remarkable enhancements in borehole formation, coal breaking and slagging efficiency. Specifically, the operation time is reduced by 60%–80%, the coal output is increased by 1–1.5 times, the pure coal seam gas extraction yield is increased by 1–2 times, and the extraction radius expands by more than 100%. These results highlight significant advancements in operational efficiency and permeability improvement effects, paving the way for efficient and economical coal seam gas extraction practices
Using natural language processing and machine learning to detect online radicalisation in the Maldivian language, Dhivehi
Early detection of online radical content is important for intelligence services to combat radicalisation and terrorism. The motivation for this research was the lack of language tools in the detection of radicalisation in the Maldivian language, Dhivehi. This research applied Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to detect online radicalisation content in Dhivehi, with the incorporation of domain-specific knowledge. The research used Machine Learning to evaluate the most effective technique for detection of radicalisation text in Dhivehi and used interviews with Subject Matter Experts and self-deradicalised individuals to validate the results, add contextual information and improve recognition accuracy. The contributions of this research to the existing body of knowledge include datasets in the form of labelled radical/non-radical text, sentiment corpus of radical words and primary interview data of self-deradicalised individuals and a technique for detection of radicalisation text in Dhivehi for the first time using Machine Learning. We found that the Naïve Bayes algorithm worked best for the detection of radicalisation text in Dhivehi with an Accuracy of 87.67%, Precision of 85.35%, Recall of 92.52% and an F2 score of 91%. Inclusion of the radical words identified through the interviews with SMEs as a count feature improved the performance of ML algorithms and Naïve Bayes by 9.57%
Vitamin K: Metabolism, genetic influences, and chronic disease outcomes
Vitamin K refers to a group of lipid-soluble vitamins that exist in two natural isoforms; phylloquinone (PK, vitamin K1) and menaquinones (MKs, vitamin K2). Phylloquinone, the primary dietary source, is found abundantly in green vegetables and plant oils. Menaquinones (MK-4 through MK-13) are synthesized by anaerobic bacteria and may be obtained through the diet from fermented foods and animal products (e.g., meats, dairy and eggs). Originally recognized for its role in blood coagulation, vitamin K is an essential cofactor for the posttranslational carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins (VKDPs), which are implicated in various physiological processes including; blood coagulation, calcium homeostasis, as well as metabolic and inflammatory pathways. Therefore, vitamin K has attracted considerable research interest for its potential implications in several diseases. While promising, the specific roles of vitamin K in various health conditions, the quantity of vitamin K (both PK and MKs) required for the function of various VKDPs, and the influence of genetics on vitamin K metabolism, remain unclear. This review aims to (i) provide an overview of the structure, dietary sources, metabolism, and physiological roles of vitamin K, including those relating to; cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, respiratory conditions, musculoskeletal health and cancer; (ii) discuss the impact of genetic factors on vitamin K status and how such factors modulate the role of vitamin K in the aforementioned chronic diseases; and (iii) outline key directions for future research
Kidfluencers, public relations and human rights: An exploration of the impact on the human rights of children as social media influencers within public relations and promotional practice
In this article we explore the human rights of children as important stakeholders in public relations (PR) practice by examining the phenomenon of social media influencer children, commonly termed kidfluencers. Children’s human rights in the digital realm have been a focus for the United Nations and those researching from media, communications and law disciplines, but have largely been ignored by PR scholarship. Given social media influencer relations is now an important part of PR practice, and a multibillion-dollar global industry, the need for more research on the genre from a PR perspective is apparent. Our research, using the UN (Human) Rights of the Child as a framework, and examining publicly available media reports on the topic of kidfluencers, uncovers key areas of concern for children working as kidfluencers, and for PR practitioners working with these children. We argue for more focus on children as stakeholders in PR research and suggest that PR practitioners and organisations need to put children at the centre of their thinking
Conceptual diagrams help dietetic students to understand and apply the nutrition care process
Aim: To evaluate the impact of a conceptual diagram assessment task on dietetic student knowledge of and confidence applying the Nutrition Care Process. Methods: Situated within a pragmatic research paradigm, this mixed methods study applied a survey administered before and after a conceptual diagram assessment task using the Nutrition Care Process to explore changes in student knowledge, self-reported confidence, perceptions towards the Nutrition Care Process, and student experience. Nineteen students enrolled in a first-semester unit within a Master level dietetic course completed the assessment task, which visually presented a client case sourced from the student-run clinic within the Nutrition Care Process framework, as an adjunct to traditional teaching. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test determined changes in knowledge and the McNemar test determined changes in self-reported confidence and perspective. Open-ended responses were thematically analyzed. Results:Knowledge scores (maximum of 10) significantly increased following participation in the assessment task (before 5.63 ± 1.67, after 8.36 ± 1.16, P Conclusions: Using conceptual diagrams alongside client cases is a novel and effective education tool to help dietetic students understand and apply the Nutrition Care Process as part of a system of assessment
Analysis of Pre-service Teachers’ Personal Metaphors about Foreign Language Teaching
This study analyses the characterisation and evolution of the personal metaphors of a sample of 34 trainee foreign language teachers, through a questionnaire of open-ended questions that included asking the participants to make drawings representing the roles of the teacher. Four categories of metaphors were considered for the analysis: behaviourist/transmissive, cognitivist/constructivist, situated, and self-referential. The results indicate that most participants were able to conceptualise their image of the teacher in the form of metaphors. The pre-service teachers’ metaphors represented are mainly cognitivist/constructivist and behaviourist/transmissive. When comparing them before and after the internship in the primary schools, most of them did not change their metaphors or their associated models about foreign language teaching; only two participants experienced a progressive change in their metaphors and three experienced a regressive change in their metaphors. The validity of metaphors as a tool for increasing the self-reflection and critical awareness of trainee teachers is confirmed
Teaching in Racially Diverse Schools: Towards a Racial Competency Framework
Safe learning environments foster the wellbeing, engagement, and educational outcomes of students. To develop resources that enable schools to create safe learning environments, we conducted focus group discussions with teachers and African heritage students in selected public schools in an Australian state. This paper reports insights from our discussions with the school staff. The findings indicate that teachers face ‘relational uncertainty’ in dealing with racial issues impacting their engagement with these students. To address these challenges, we propose a racial competency framework, featuring distinctive dimensions, drivers, and domains. The framework emphasises the need for schools to support racial value awareness, racial literacy, and anti-racist orientations through drivers such as deliberation, learning, and commitment. Furthermore, in assessing whether schools nurture racial competency, we focus on school policy and governance, teacher practices, and community engagement. The proposed framework offers a comprehensive approach to creating racially safe and inclusive learning environments that foster a sense of belonging and engagement
