    Smartphone Assessment of the Sitting Heel-Rise Test

    YesThe study presents a new approach for assessing plantarflexor muscles’ function using a smartphone. The test involves performing repeated heel raises for 60 s while seated. The seated heel-rise test offers a simple method for assessing plantarflexor muscles’ function in those with severe balance impairment who are unable to complete tests performed while standing. The study aimed to showcase how gyroscopic data from a smartphone placed on the lower limb can be used to assess the test. Eight participants performed the seated heel-rise test with each limb. Gyroscope and 2D video analysis data (60 Hz) of limb motion were used to determine the number of cycles, the average rise (T-rise), lowering (T-lower), and cycle (T-total) times. The number of cycles detected matched exactly when the gyroscope and kinematic data were compared. There was good time domain agreement between gyroscopic and video data (T-rise = 0.0005 s, T-lower = 0.0013 s, and T-total = 0.0017 s). The 95% CI limits of agreement were small (T-total −0.1118, 0.1127 s, T-lower −0.1152, 0.1179 s, and T-total −0.0763, 0.0797 s). Results indicate that a smartphone placed on the thigh can successfully assess the seated heel-rise test. The seated heel-rise test offers an attractive alternative to test plantarflexor muscles’ functionality in those unable to perform tests in standing positions

    Construct Development for Resilient Leadership Model (Rel Model): A View from Malaysian SMEs

    YesEntrepreneurs need to be more resilient. As economic disruptions are inevitable, organizations need to have resilient leaders. Resilient organizations possess the capacity to sustain favorable transformations and successfully navigate numerous hurdles during periods of crisis or adversity. The purpose of this research is to develop a new measurement tool for resilient leadership within the context of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Despite vast empirical evidence on the topic of leadership toward sustainable performance, validated assessments of resilient leadership are still underexplored. Therefore, the researchers initiated a quantitative research approach by gathering data from 100 SME leaders across various industries. The newly developed resilient leadership questionnaires were electronically distributed to the respondents. The data was analyzed using SPSS 26.0. The data analysis comprised descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and exploratory factor analysis. The results revealed and verified six- dimensions of resilient leadership, which include adaptability, emotional intelligence, visionary, spiritual intelligence, growth mindset, and internal ecosystem. The measurement scale developed, and the factor structure produced can be used to assess and develop more resilient leaders that could help to sustain business performance among SMEs. The inclusion of a spiritual element into the model adds value and provides a holistic view of a resilient leadership model that is not only applicable to the context of SMEs in Malaysia but also across borders

    YesCRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) gene editing technologies appear to be a game-changer and suggest great potential for genome manipulation and for developments in next-generation therapeutics. Ethical, legal and social concerns have been raised in light of recent applications in humans. Concern also arises in relation to the potential of such developments for misuse. In addressing the post-COVID19 challenges raised by responsible research innovation and in confronting what to do about the vexed question of “dual-use”, we contend that awareness-raising and education concerning the ethical, legal and social implications of scientific research innovation represents a welcome and empowering alternative to top down regulatory responses that may serve to stifle innovation. The design and subsequent implementation of a novel transformative pedagogy combining Team-Based Learning and Threshold Concepts yields both empirical evidence-based metrics for real-time learning. As well as generating novel empirical data-sets for the identification of subject-specific threshold concepts across discrete specialisms in the life sciences, we argue that this hybrid methodology can be used to engage science professionals and students alike in meaningful and much-needed dialogue about developments relating to genome manipulation. We demonstrate how evidence-based threshold concepts can inform the design of bespoke subject-specific training as we suggest was the case from our deployment of team-based learning and threshold concepts during our proof of concept application, prior to the pandemic, during the course of two European Union Human Brain Project training programmes undertaken in 2017 and 2018, with experts in neuroscience research at the Karonlinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.The Leverhulme Trust Grant EB-2018-005/1

    Latent Semantic Analysis and Graph Theory for Alert Correlation: A Proposed Approach for IoT Botnet Detection

    YesIn recent times, the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has brought a significant shift in the digital transformation of various industries. The enabling technologies have accelerated this adoption. The possibilities unlocked by IoT have been unprecedented, leading to the emergence of smart applications that have been integrated into national infrastructure. However, the popularity of IoT technology has also attracted the attention of adversaries, who have leveraged the inherent limitations of IoT devices to launch sophisticated attacks, including Multi-Stage attacks (MSAs) such as IoT botnet attacks. These attacks have caused significant losses in revenue across industries, amounting to billions of dollars. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a system for IoT botnet detection that comprises two phases. The first phase aims to identify IoT botnet traffic, the input to this phase is the IoT traffic, which is subjected to feature selection and classification model training to distinguish malicious traffic from normal traffic. The second phase analyses the malicious traffic from stage one to identify different botnet attack campaigns. The second stage employs an alert correlation approach that combines the Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) unsupervised learning and graph theory based techniques. The proposed system was evaluated using a publicly available real IoT traffic dataset and yielded promising results, with a True Positive Rate (TPR) of over 99% and a False Positive Rate (FPR) of 0%.Researchers Supporting Project, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under Grant RSPD2024R95

    Experimental investigation on flexural performance of steel-UHPC composite beams with steel shear keys

    YesTest results of steel-ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) composite beams with welded steel shear keys (SSKs) under four-point bending are presented in this paper. The objective of the investigation is to reduce the self-weight and manufacturing cost of large-span structures. The study investigates the effects of strength of concrete slab, type, spacing and size of SSK, and concrete slab height and width on flexural behavior of composite beams. The experimental results demonstrate that enhancing concrete strength, reducing SSK spacing, increasing concrete slab size, and using large-size SSK can all significantly enhance the flexural performance. The composite beams with welded SSK exhibit a maximum relative slip of less than 4 mm, while the counterpart with welded bolts has a maximum relative slip greater than 4 mm. The study shows that the welded SSK is more effective than welded bolts in improving the interface shear performance of composite beams and improving the stiffness and load capacity. Additionally, the study defines four failure modes of steel-UHPC composite beams, and the formulae for flexural capacity is developed based on the reasonable basic assumptions. The calculated results fit well with the tested results.     Comparative analysis of automated scanning and manual penetration testing for enhanced cybersecurity

    YesWeb platform security has become a significant concern in the current cyber world. Adversaries constantly advance their skills and technologies to bypass modern cyber defence techniques to lure website vulnerabilities. In the cyber world, finding and mitigating vulnerabilities on the website is essential to avoid any damage to the organization. Two key techniques - vulnerability assessment and penetration testing - play a crucial role in identifying and mitigating these weaknesses. While vulnerability assessment scans the platform, revealing potential flaws, penetration testing goes a step further, simulating real-world attack scenarios to assess their true exploitability and possible damage. This paper compares automated scanning and manual penetration testing to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques in uncovering vulnerabilities. The experimental results confirm that manual penetration testing is more effective than automated testing in terms of accuracy. Additionally, practical studies highlight the importance of a penetration tester's skills and experience in identifying and exploiting security weaknesses. Automated tools may also generate false positive results

    Enhancing safety in IoT systems: A model-based assessment of a smart irrigation system using fault tree analysis

    YesThe agricultural industry has the potential to undergo a revolutionary transformation with the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Crop monitoring can be improved, waste reduced, and efficiency increased. However, there are risks associated with system failures that can lead to significant losses and food insecurity. Therefore, a proactive approach is necessary to ensure the effective safety assessment of new IoT systems before deployment. It is crucial to identify potential causes of failure and their severity from the conceptual design phase of the IoT system within smart agricultural ecosystems. This will help prevent such risks and ensure the safety of the system. This study examines the failure behaviour of IoT-based Smart Irrigation Systems (SIS) to identify potential causes of failure. This study proposes a comprehensive Model-Based Safety Analysis (MBSA) framework to model the failure behaviour of SIS and generate analysable safety artefacts of the system using System Modelling Language (SysML). The MBSA approach provides meticulousness to the analysis, supports model reuse, and makes the development of a Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) model easier, thereby reducing the inherent limitations of informal system analysis. The FTA model identifies component failures and their propagation, providing a detailed understanding of how individual component failures can lead to the overall failure of the SIS. This study offers valuable insights into the interconnectedness of various component failures by evaluating the SIS failure behaviour through the FTA model. This study generates multiple minimal cut sets, which provide actionable insights into designing dependable IoT-based SIS. This analysis identifies potential weak points in the design and provides a foundation for safety risk mitigation strategies. This study emphasises the significance of a systematic and model-driven approach to improving the dependability of IoT systems in agriculture, ensuring sustainable and safe implementation

    APOE genotype, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) supplementation and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) levels in patients with multiple colorectal polyps: A secondary analysis of the seAFOod polyp prevention trial

    YesIntroduction: We examined the relationship between Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) levels in participants of the seAFOod trial, who were undergoing colonoscopy surveillance after removal of colorectal polyps. Methods: Baseline and on-treatment (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] 2 g daily or placebo for 6 months) levels of n-3 HUFAs, and plasma 18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (HEPE), were analysed according to APOE genotype (based on polymorphisms rs429358 and rs7412) in 584 participants. Results: Before treatment, APOE2/2 individuals had lower levels, and APOE4/4 participants had higher levels, of n-3 HUFAs, including EPA, than APOE3/3 counterparts (P < 0.01 for the APOE2/2 versus APOE4/4 comparison). After EPA supplementation, n-3 HUFA levels were not significantly different when stratified by APOE genotype, although APOE4 carriers displayed lower plasma 18-HEPE levels than individuals without an APOE4 allele (P = 0.002). Conclusions: APOE genotype is associated with differential n-3 HUFA and 18-HEPE levels in individuals with multiple colorectal polyps.This project (NIHR128210) was funded by the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme, an MRC and NIHR partnership.     Exploring how mobile money adoption affects nutrition and household food security

    YesThis paper explores how using mobile money services affects food security and nutritional status of households in Tanzania. This study uses data obtained from three waves of the Tanzanian National Panel Surveys and the instrumental variable (IV) approach. The evidence from this paper shows that using mobile money services resulted in household's enhanced nutritional and food security status. Households' receipt of remittances is the main pathway in which using mobile money services influences the food security and nutritional outcomes among households in Tanzania
