Energy Poverty and the Challenges of Consumer Access to Electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Routledge Handbook of Consumer Protection and Behaviour in Energy Markets

    No full text
YesAs the world is transitioning to a low carbon economy, there are various energy issues that have arisen not only in the developing world but also the developed world. These rotate around the energy access, energy poverty and energy security challenges that must be addressed in different countries. The crucial role of energy in our everyday lives can no longer be underestimated. Energy is used in our homes for cooking, lighting. It is also used in hospitals, industries and other sectors of the economy. Despite of this, hundreds of millions of people still lack even basic access to modern energy such as electricity, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for lighting and cooking, respectively. In the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region for instance, over 600 million people lack access to modern energy. For the developed world like the United Kingdom, in recent years they have been struggling with energy poverty challenges, specifically, issues of affordability, as most people have been finding it hard to pay for the energy bills. Despite these energy challenges, there have been debate to limit the reliance of certain types of energy such as fossil fuels, which are considered to be the main contributor to Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHE), that are associated with climate change. This book chapter therefore, is intended to explore the energy access challenges in SSA, and analyse the effectiveness of the energy transition initiatives. The chapter will also draw more attention to the realities of the energy progression dialogue in both the global north and global south. The full-text of this book chapter will be released for public view at the end of the publisher embargo on 27 Mar 2026

Dynamic connectedness between AI, green finance, and energy assets: Risk transmission and portfolio implications during net-zero transition period

    No full text
YesThe integration of artificial intelligence with green finance is rapidly increasing. It gains more importance against the backdrop of achieving a low-carbon future in the fast-changing global economy. In this context, this paper exploits daily prices between January 2018 and August 2024 to assess the opportunities associated with AI-augmented assets and green finance, and how AI assets can change the portfolio diversification and risk-management strategies. Through a market spillover framework, during crisis episodes, the findings indicate that AI and green-energy indices are transmitters of return spillovers. Green bonds and dirty energy indices, on the other hand, are net absorbers of the shock, which indicates their passive behavior. Besides, portfolio analysis shows that AI-based and clean-energy investments are beneficial to manage portfolios and provide significant hedging performance. Other assets like green bonds and equity securities demonstrate negative hedging effectiveness, which indicates a high exposure to risk. These findings highlight the invaluable nature of AI and clean-energy assets in driving market connections and providing robust risk management. The conclusions made in this study provide policymakers and investors with a key insight that is vital to adjust their investments amid fast-changing landscape of AI and green finance.University of Bradfor

The Impact of Global Biodiversity Loss on Corporations across Industries

    No full text
YesThe decline in biodiversity poses a significant risk to the sustainability of industries and countries worldwide. Hence, businesses must understand and reduce their impact on biodiversity, and this commitment should be reflected in their annual and sustainability reports. This study draws on the natural capital-based view and examines data from 2,779 publicly traded companies in 59 countries from 2015 to 2023 to determine how companies address biodiversity issues and shape related disclosures. We find that some companies are taking biodiversity issues seriously. In addition, our findings show that green innovation has a direct and positive impact on financial performance indicators. This indicates that environment-friendly innovations make resource use more efficient and improves a company's reputation, subsequently enhancing its financial outcomes

Smartwatch assessment of CPR performance administered to an instrumented mannequin

    No full text
YesCardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that requires effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to preserve life. Smartwatches equipped with accelerometer sensors and worn close to the wrist joint may offer an accessible way to provide CPR feedback. This study determined whether accelerometer data from a smartwatch could provide valid estimates of CPR parameters, including compression, decompression, frequency, and cycle time. Nineteen medical school students performed CPR on an instrumented mannequin while wearing a smartwatch. CPR parameters were derived from the smartwatch’s accelerometer signals using a custom algorithm after first resampling the data to 60 Hz to circumvent the issue of small fluctuations in the sampling frequency inherent in these devices. Results were compared with kinematic data obtained from video analysis undertaken simultaneously. Across 3,005 CPR cycles, smartwatch analysis indicated that 76.7% of compressions were within the recommended depth range (5–6 ± 0.5 cm), while the mannequin software reported a mean performance score of 98.7 ± 1.35%. There was good agreement between smartwatch and video analysis for cycle duration (bias = 0.00 s; 95% CI: −0.05 to 0.05 s) and compression depth (bias = − 0.31 cm; 95% CI: −1.61 to 0.98 cm). These findings demonstrate that smartwatch accelerometer data analyzed with the proposed algorithm can accurately assess CPR performance administered to a mannequin, supporting its potential use as a practical assessment tool for CPR. Further work is needed to develop a smartwatch App that provides real-time feedback to improve CPR performance during training and real-world resuscitation scenarios.Brasil (CAPES) Finance Code 00

Evidence for punishment and execution on the foreshore: a unique early medieval burial (680-810 AD) from London

    No full text
YesIn 1991, a rescue excavation uncovered a unique early medieval burial (680-810 AD) of an adult female on the foreshore of the River Thames, London. Parts of her body had been covered by moss, and her body had been placed between two sheets of bark, with the grave marked by posts, making the body visible at high tide. Multidisciplinary analyses of the human remains shows that she was from London, and had survived a severe beating to her back that had been repeated before death, which was caused by a blow to her head. We suggest that she may have been beaten then executed, with the choice of burial location perhaps symbolising execution by drowning. The full text will be available at the end of the publisher's embargo: 12th May 202

Pharmacogenomic Medicine Use and Adverse Outcomes in Hospitalised Older Patients: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

YesThis study aimed to assess the prevalence of the use of medications with pharmacogenomic guidelines upon hospital admission in patients aged 65 and over and evaluate its association with adverse outcomes, including length of stay, unplanned admissions, and repeat hospital admissions. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using hospital admissions data from 2018–2019 in one NHS hospital trust in England, focusing on patients aged 65 and over. The usage of medications with pharmacogenomic guidelines was examined, and comparisons were made between their prevalence in unplanned and planned admissions. Multivariable models assessed whether the use of medications with pharmacogenomic guidelines were associated with adverse outcomes, considering frailty status. Analysis of 59, 973 admissions revealed 67 pharmacogenomics medicines as per the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) guidelines, with 11 classified as high-risk among 1438 unique medicines identified from 560, 179 recorded medications. Notably, unplanned admissions exhibited a higher prevalence of medications with pharmacogenomic guidelines (84% versus 64%, p < 0.001) compared to planned admissions. The models demonstrated the usage of these medications was associated with adverse outcomes (length of stay in hospital, unplanned admission and repeat hospital admission) with substantial evidence (Delta_AICc < 2) particularly in patients with high frailty status. This study highlights the association between medications with pharmacogenomic guidelines and adverse outcomes, particularly among patients with high frailty. The findings emphasise the importance of integrating pharmacogenomic-guided care into the management of older individuals with frailty to mitigate adverse outcomes and enhance medication safety

Adoption of Self-Directed Learning in Post- and Pre-Pandemic Contexts: A Leadership Perspective

    No full text
YesLearning is acknowledged by many as a lifelong process and self-directed learning (SDL) plays a key role in this step as they take the responsibility in controlling what they learn to reach their goals and objectives. At the same time, the leadership role of instructors and institutional heads fostering a supportive environment becomes crucial. Despite the transformation of global education from a teacher-centric to a student-centric approach, especially with the pandemic situation, emerging contexts have seen a reduced impact. The study aims to explore this phenomenon in the emerging context of India and Sri Lanka to first identify the present context of SDL and identify the key drivers and challenges associated with the learning transformation. The study aims to capture both the learners' and educators' perspectives in this regard to build a stronger foundation, understand the dynamic role of empowered leadership in higher education and deepen the knowledge on more context-specific factors that are yet to be explored in the emerging nations' perspective
