Integrating AI and Metaverse in Value Creation of Customer Experience: A Systematic Review and Future Research Agenda
YesPurpose - The study aims to contribute to the body of knowledge by characterising the integration of AI and the metaverse from the perspective of the TCCM and ESG frameworks, focusing on their role in value creation for customer experience.
Design/methodology/approach- This study employed a systematic literature review method based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol, and 42 articles were selected as the final sample size related to the AI and metaverse literature. Further, the TCCM and ESG frameworks were used to present the theoretical perspectives.
Findings- This study found that little investigation has been performed in the context of how AI and the metaverse contribute to the value creation of customer experience. The environmental, social, and governance perspectives have been discovered, which further confirms the need for employing innovative immersive technology for social and environmental sustainability. Prior studies were centred on either AI or the metaverse and were primarily related to general themes rather than E-Commerce Customer Experience. China (eight studies) was the leading country that performed research related to this domain, followed by other countries such as Singapore (four studies), India (three studies), South Korea (three studies), and the United Kingdom (three studies), etc.
Originality/value – The present study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on integrating AI and the metaverse, considering the perspectives of the TCCM and ESG frameworks to investigate the value creation of customer experience by enriching the knowledge economy.
Research limitations/implications– The present study extends theoretical knowledge in the extant literature on AI and the metaverse. This can further support scholars and researchers in their academic and research initiatives in the context of their respective studies. This study is based on a systematic literature review approach and employed solely the Web of Science electronic database. Future research must study and design concepts considering scenarios of what would happen if AI and the metaverse were implemented in diverse industries and contextual settings
Beyond the Hype: Challenges of Implementing AR Marketing in Developing Economies
YesThis scoping review aims to apply the Arksey O'Malley framework to identify the dark side of using Augmented reality (AR) marketing in emerging economies. An effective search strategy was developed to identify relevant studies and literature on the dark side of AR marketing in emerging economies. The Web of Science academic database was utilized to gather relevant literature. The thematic analysis was carried out to identify prevalent themes in the literature on the dark side of using Augmented reality (AR) marketing in emerging economies. The four notable identified themes were, namely, consumer privacy concern, over-dependency on foreign technology, non-consideration of cultural norms and sensitivities, and lack of local expertise. Despite contributing to the literature, this scoping review is constrained in its area of inquiry due to the seven-year timescale, which reviewed research findings published between 2018 and 2024. Firms need to determine whether to offer AR functionality based on the characteristics of the products that they sell in developing economies
An Overview of Distributed Firewalls and Controllers Intended for Mobile Cloud Computing
YesMobile cloud computing (MCC) is a representation of the interaction between cloud computing and mobile devices, reshaping the utilisation of technology for consumers and businesses. This level of mobility and decentralisation of devices in MCC necessitates a highly secured framework to facilitate it. This literature review on distributed firewalls and controllers for mobile cloud computing reveals the critical need for a security framework tailored to the dynamic and decentralised nature of MCC. This study further emphasises the importance of integrating distributed firewalls with central controllers to address the unique security challenges in MCC, such as nomadic device behaviour and resource allocation optimisation. Additionally, it highlights the significance of Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASBs) in improving data security and ensuring compliance within mobile cloud applications. This review also addresses specific research questions related to security concerns, scalable framework development, and the effectiveness of distributed firewall and controller systems in MCC. It explores the complexities involved in merging Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualisation (NFV), and CASB into a cohesive system, focusing on the need to resolve interoperability issues and maintain low latency and high throughput while balancing performance across distributed firewalls and controllers. The review also points to the necessity of privacy-preserving methods within CASB to uphold privacy standards in MCC. Furthermore, it identifies the integration of NFV and SDN as crucial for enhancing security and performance in MCC environments, and stresses the importance of future research directions, such as the incorporation of machine learning and edge computing, to further improve the security and efficiency of MCC systems. To the best of our knowledge, this review is the first to comprehensively examine the integration of these advanced technologies within the context of MCC
Turkish trade in eight service categories and role of the exchange rate
YesA new strand of literature in international economics is now in the early stages of development, i.e., the impact of exchange rate changes on service trade. We add to this literature by considering the link between the Turkish lira's real effective exchange rate and its trade in services. Sinsectce nonlinear adjustment of the exchange rate has proved to yield more significant outcomes relative to linear adjustment, we estimate a nonlinear model (assuming the effects are asymmetric) in addition to a linear model (which assumes the effects are symmetric). When we first estimated the models using Turkish aggregate trade in services, we could only find some short-run effects. However, we disaggregated the data into eight service categories to reduce aggregation bias. We then found short-run significant effects in all eight service industries. Short-run effects lasted into long-run effects in six industries. The unaffected industries were construction and transport
Navigating Power Dynamics in the Public Sector through AI-driven Algorithmic Decision-Making
YesPublic sector institutions are under increasing pressure to deliver greater public value through disruptive technologies, despite ongoing pressures. In response to evolving technological change and an abundance of information, many public sector organisations have adopted Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve decision-making and generate social value. While AI’s role in public administration is gaining attention, little is known about how its use alters internal power dynamics. This research uses a qualitative case study approach, drawing on 30 semi-structured interviews with operational managers and various analysts in a large public institution to explore how AI influences power relations. Findings reveal that AI use creates tensions among operational managers, organisation-wide analysts and increasingly influential “hybrid”/in-house analysts with both technical and institutional expertise. The study introduces and empirically validates AI Power Enactment Framework and proposes the AI Power Matrix, offering policymakers a structured tool to evaluate AI projects. These insights can guide targeted funding strategies and capacity building to reduce overreliance on hybrid analysts and better support AI implementation success in the public sector
Unveiling the Impact of Information Vagueness on Carbon Emission Inventories using Fuzzy Sets
YesCarbon emissions reporting has become essential to pursue corporate sustainability. Several market regulators have established guidelines on disclosures of greenhouse gas emissions. However, significant challenges persist due to the uncertainty and vagueness in emissions data, particularly in the context of Scope 3 emissions from the supply chain. This uncertainty hinders effective decision-making and compromises the comparability of emissions data across companies, leading to a lack of accountability, inefficient regulatory frameworks, and delayed action on climate change. Without developing proper management approaches to address this vagueness urgently, companies, investors and policymakers risk making misguided decisions that can significantly hinder global sustainability goals that need to be quickly addressed. This study introduces a Two-Dimensional Fuzzy-Monte Carlo (2DFMC) framework that integrates Monte Carlo simulations to model variability with Type-2 Fuzzy Sets (T2FS), which capture higher-order uncertainty inherent in carbon emissions data. We tested the model for Brazilian companies that release emission data through GHG Protocol. By combining these methodologies, the 2DFMC model addresses both aleatory (randomness) and epistemic (vagueness) uncertainty, providing a more robust tool for evaluating carbon performance, especially for Scope 3 emissions. Our results show that the 2DFMC approach improves the accuracy and reliability of emissions assessments, helping companies better manage data uncertainty and ensuring more trustworthy carbon disclosures. The 2DFMC framework offers critical practical implications for companies and regulators: it enhances environmental accountability, improves the comparability of emissions disclosures, and provides actionable insights for better-informed decision-making. Conceptualising vulnerability regimes in shared settings in the sharing economy
YesThe aim of this paper is to theorise what mechanisms shape and actualise gender-based vulnerability in private shared settings of the sharing economy. Despite extensive documentation of gendered risks and discrimination in the sharing economy, there remains a lack of conceptual frameworks that explain these mechanisms. Yet, understanding them is crucial for assessing associated risks, addressing problematic experiences discussed in the literature, and determining if the sharing economy can deliver on its promises of fair access and social sustainability. By synthesising insights from Joan Acker's structural theory of inequality regimes and Cecilia Ridgeway's cultural-interactionist theory of gender inequality, we develop the novel concept of vulnerability regimes. We conceptualise vulnerability regimes as emerging when internalised gender status beliefs, shaped by dominant socio-cultural norms, are enacted within interactional contexts structured by key elements of sharing platform design. We define these elements as asymmetric control over material and labour resources, intimate proximity, trust mechanisms, and lack of external observation and institutional accountability. We conceptualise that the outcome of this interaction generates three axes in vulnerability regimes such as access to services, quality of service, and security and privacy. The proposed theorising provides a foundation for guiding empirical research. It also informs platform governance, regulatory frameworks, and strategies aimed at ensuring safer, more equitable participation in the sharing economy as well as other relevant contexts
The ‘Threat’ of ‘Conversions’: Cultural Violence in the 2008 anti-Christian violence in India
YesWith the rise of the Hindu nationalist movement in India, a system of anti-Christian violence has emerged. This paper explores the movement’s justifications of physical and structural violence against India’s Christians, casting them as a form of cultural violence. It argues that Hindutva’s broad conception and portrayal of India’s Christians as a demographic, cultural and political ‘threa’t allows justifications for violence to be deployed adroitly and flexibly across varying state contexts, and the national level. The portrayal as an internal and external threat enables the movement to escalate tropes about the Christian ‘threat’, as and when required to justify direct and structural violence. Thus, making the system of anti-Christian violence in India more potent. By examining newspaper archives, civil society and government reports, and documents and speeches of Hindutva-aligned organizations, this paper revisits the 2008 anti-Christian violence, primarily in Orissa and Karnataka, India’s worst episode of anti-Christian violence

On decomposing the energy rebound effect
YesWe suggest a new decomposition of the rebound effect, highlighting the contribution of four components: efficiency, technology, capital, and energy changes. The new approach offers several advantages: it has a strong economic foundation as it starts from the modeling of the production process, it naturally gives the option to understand how each of the four components contributes to the rebound effect, and it is based on a non-parametric estimation method that does not resort on strong assumptions nor require estimating parameters. We apply our technique to the case of China’s logistics industry, which is counteracted by increased energy consumption and carbon emissions to support economic growth. Our findings reveal that the rebound effect varies significantly across provinces, with an average of 0.76. Economic growth, driven by factors such as capital accumulation and technological advancements, plays a crucial role in determining the rebound effect, with provinces experiencing higher growth benefiting from improved energy efficiency. We further establish determinants of the rebound effect, viz., government intervention, environmental control, and economic growth. The results highlight region-specific energy policy that takes note of the spatially heterogeneous impacts of economic development and policy efforts on the rebound effect
