Compliance or non‐compliance during financial crisis: Does it matter?
YesThis paper investigates whether shareholder value is affected by non-compliance with the prescriptions of a principle-based ‘comply or explain’ sys-tem of corporate governance in the context of the global financial crisis of2007–2009. Using System Generalized Method of Moments estimates to controlfor different types of endogeneity, the main findings of this paper suggest thatnon-compliance with the UK Corporate Governance Code adversely affectsshareholder value. Furthermore, ex-post estimates reveal that compliance withcertain corporate governance mechanisms is more beneficial than others. Withregard to this, compliance with provisions related to board independence ismore important than complying with performance-related pay requirements ofthe code. These findings have implications for policy makers and financialinstitutions regarding the usefulness of compliance with a prescribed code ofcorporate governance, specifically during periods of financial distress
An assay for quantitative analysis of polysialic acid expression in cancer cells
YesPolysialic acid (polySia) is a linear polysaccharide comprised of N-acetylneuraminic acid residues and its over-expression in cancer cells has been correlated with poor clinical prognosis. An assay has been developed for quantitative analysis of cellular polySia expression. This was achieved by extracting and purifying released polySia from glycoproteins by mild acid hydrolysis and optimised organic extraction. The polySia was further hydrolysed into Sia monomers, followed by fluorescent labelling and quantitative analysis. The assay was qualified utilising endoneuraminidase-NF to remove polySia from the surface of C6-ST8SiaII cancer cells (EC50 = 2.13 ng/ml). The result was comparable to that obtained in a polySia-specific cellular ELISA assay. Furthermore, the assay proved suitable for evaluation of changes in polySia expression following treatment with a small molecule inhibitor of polysialylation. Given the importance of polySia in multiple disease states, notably cancer, this is a potentially vital tool with applications in the fields of drug discovery and glycobiology
Effect of various packing structure on gas absorption for enhanced CO2 capture
YesThe increasing concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is a primary global environmental concern due to its detrimental impacts on climate change. A significant reduction in CO2 generation together with its capture and storage is an imperative need of the time. CO2 can be captured from power plants and other industries through various methods such as absorption, adsorption, membranes, physical and biological separation techniques. The most widely used systems are solvent based CO2 absorption method. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of various random and structured packing materials in absorption column on CO2 removing efficiency. Aspen plus was used to develop the CO2 capture model for different packing materials with Monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent in order to optimize the system. It was found that the lowest re-boiler duty of 3,444 kJ/KgCO2 yield the highest rich CO2 loading of 0.475 (mole CO2/mole MEA) by using the BX type of structured packing having the highest surface area. The surface area of the different packing materials were inversely proportional to the temperature profiles along the column. Furthermore, the packing materials with higher surface areas yielded higher CO2 loading profiles and vice versa. The findings of this study and recommendation would help further research on optimization of solvent-based CO2 capturing technologies

Classification images for contrast discrimination
YesContrast discrimination measures the smallest difference in contrast (the threshold) needed to successfully tell two stimuli apart. The contrast discrimination threshold typically increases with contrast. However, for low spatial frequency gratings the contrast threshold first increases, but then starts to decrease at contrasts above about 50%. This behaviour was originally observed in contrast discrimination experiments using dark spots as stimuli, suggesting that the contrast discrimination threshold for low spatial frequency gratings may be dominated by responses to the dark parts of the sinusoid. This study measures classification images for contrast discrimination experiments using a 1 cycle per degree sinusoidal grating at contrasts of 0, 25%, 50% and 75%. The classification images obtained clearly show that observers emphasize the darker parts of the sinusoidal grating (i.e. the troughs), and this emphasis increases with contrast. At 75% contrast, observers almost completely ignored the bright parts (peaks) of the sinusoid, and for some observers the emphasis on the troughs is already evident at contrasts as low as 25%. Analysis using a Hammerstein model suggests that the bias towards the dark parts of the stimulus is due to an early nonlinearity, perhaps similar to that proposed by Whittle
The Chemistry of Ynamide and its Application in Organic Synthesis
YesYnamide, is an understudied but attractive class of alkynes, activated by the donating ability of the nitrogen adjacent to alkynes. With the nucleophilicity on β-carbon and the electrophilicity on α-carbon of ynamides, this review summarizes the syntheses of ynamides and miscellaneous reactions - oxidation, rearrangement, cyclization, and cycloaddition to construct complicated heterocyclic rings. A cost-effective process chain for thermoplastic microneedle manufacture combining laser micro-machining and micro-injection moulding
YesHigh-throughput manufacturing of transdermal microneedle arrays poses a significant challenge due to the high precision and number of features that need to be produced and the requirement of multi-step processing methods for achieving challenging micro-features. To address this challenge, we report a flexible and cost-effective process chain for transdermal microneedle array manufacture that includes mould production using laser machining and replication of thermoplastic microneedles via micro-injection moulding (micromoulding). The process chain also incorporates an in-line manufacturing data monitoring capability where the variability in the quality of microneedle arrays can be determined in a production run using captured data. Optical imaging and machine vision technologies are also implemented to create a quality inspection system that allows rapid evaluation of key quality indicators. Bilingual Cyber-aggression Detection on Social Media using LSTM Autoencoder
YesCyber-aggression is an offensive behaviour attacking people based on
race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and other traits. It has become
a major issue plaguing the online social media. In this research, we have developed
a deep learning-based model to identify different levels of aggression (direct, indirect and no aggression) in a social media post in a bilingual scenario. The model
is an autoencoder built using the LSTM network and trained with non-aggressive
comments only. Any aggressive comment (direct or indirect) will be regarded as
an anomaly to the system and will be marked as Overtly (direct) or Covertly
(indirect) aggressive comment depending on the reconstruction loss by the autoencoder. The validation results on the dataset from two popular social media
sites: Facebook and Twitter with bilingual (English and Hindi) data outperformed
the current state-of-the-art models with improvements of more than 11% on the
test sets of the English dataset and more than 6% on the test sets of the Hindi
dataset
‘’I feel like I’m in poverty. I don’t do much outside of work other than survive": In-work poverty and multiple employment in the UK
YesThis paper argues for the need to reconsider the changing nature of in-work poverty (IWP). In doing so, we present evidence not included in current debates or statistics, of people working in more than one job, yet still experiencing IWP. Using the dynamic theory of poverty and a qualitative approach, we identify various structural constraints that sustain cycles of IWP. This highlights the multi-dimensionalities of poverty, incorporating the temporalities, types and depths of IWP. Our evidence demonstrates how poverty is experienced and individualised and also how it is created and sustained through paid work, rather than being challenged by it
