    Churches and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria

    YesFollowing the global adoption of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015, Nigeria has established a variety of domestic mechanisms to promote the local implementation of the SDGs across the country. Mechanisms established for this purpose at the federal level of government include the establishment of the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs (OSSAP-SDG), a Committee on SDGs in the upper and lower chambers of the National Assembly, and an Inter-Ministerial Committee on SDGs to coordinate the engagement with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies as it relates to SDGs. Similar mechanisms for the localisation of the SDGs have also been established in the thirty-six (36) states of the federation. Nonetheless, the attainment of the SDGs in Nigeria continues to be hampered by various governance challenges, including the low level of awareness and inadequate agency among Nigerian citizens about the SDGs (Njoku 2016). One institution that has been identified as a possible solution to overcoming these challenges are faith-based organisations (FBOs), such as churches, mosques, and temples (Akinloye 2018). This call for the inclusion of FBOs in development initiatives such as the SDGs is driven in part by the increase in the number, influence and visibility of FBOs (Jennings et al 2008) and a shift towards development frameworks that are more suited for understanding development in poorer and less developed parts of the world (Brett 2009). In this regard, FBOs also possess important organisational features such as their popular legitimacy and motivational qualities (James 2009), strong donor networks (Ferris 2005)6, and historical rootedness (Jennings et al 2008) that have seen them emerge as key and effective partners in driving development in their respective host communities. Within the context of Nigeria, the FBOs – SDG link is further enhanced by the influential role of religion and religious leaders in the lives of their members (Afolabi 2015) and the proliferation of churches especially (Obiefuna et al 2016)

    Numerical investigation of the influence of the small pipeline on local scour morphology around the piggyback pipeline

    YesThis paper presents the results from a numerical simulation study to investigate the effect of the position angle (α) of small pipeline on the local scour and the hydrodynamic force around the piggyback pipeline in steady current conditions. Results show that the local scour depth around the piggyback pipeline increases first and then decreases with the increase of α. The scour depth and width reach the maximum values as the small pipe locates at the top of the large pipeline (i.e. α = 90°). The scour around the piggyback pipeline is accelerated when α ranges between 30° and 165°, while for α = 0°–30° and 165°–180°, the local scour around the piggyback pipeline is inhibited. Furthermore, the small pipe placed in front of the large pipe has slightly larger effect on the scour hole morphology than that when it is placed behind the large pipe. The drag force coefficient increases first and reaches the maximum value at α = 75°, and then decreases with the increase of α. Eventually the drag force coefficient approaches roughly a constant. The lift force coefficient is approximately a V-shaped with the variation of α and has the maximum value at α = 90°

    Reweighted Discriminative Optimization for least-squares problems with point cloud registration

    YesOptimization plays a pivotal role in computer graphics and vision. Learning-based optimization algorithms have emerged as a powerful optimization technique for solving problems with robustness and accuracy because it learns gradients from data without calculating the Jacobian and Hessian matrices. The key aspect of the algorithms is the least-squares method, which formulates a general parametrized model of unconstrained optimizations and makes a residual vector approach to zeros to approximate a solution. The method may suffer from undesirable local optima for many applications, especially for point cloud registration, where each element of transformation vectors has a different impact on registration. In this paper, Reweighted Discriminative Optimization (RDO) method is proposed. By assigning different weights to components of the parameter vector, RDO explores the impact of each component and the asymmetrical contributions of the components on fitting results. The weights of parameter vectors are adjusted according to the characteristics of the mean square error of fitting results over the parameter vector space at per iteration. Theoretical analysis for the convergence of RDO is provided, and the benefits of RDO are demonstrated with tasks of 3D point cloud registrations and multi-views stitching. The experimental results show that RDO outperforms state-of-the-art registration methods in terms of accuracy and robustness to perturbations and achieves further improvement than non-weighting learning-based optimization

    TiO2 nanostructured coated functionally modified and composite electrospun chitosan nanofibers membrane for efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant in wastewater

    YesIn this study, we prepared chitosan (Cs_P) nanofibers (NFs) membrane by electrospinning. The Cs_P NFs membrane was then chemically functionalized (CsF) by a novel stepwise chemical process. The CsF NFs membrane was electrospray with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to prepare the CsF_Coa NFs membrane. A second NFs membrane with embedded TiO2 NPs (Cs_Co) was also prepared by electrospinning. The TiO2 NPs, Cs_P, CsF s, CsF_Coa NFs, and Cs_Co NFs membranes were analyzed by standard spectroscopic, microscopic, X-ray, and thermal methods. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the incorporation of the new functional group into the Cs structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirmed the FTIR results and the fabrication of the CsF NFs membrane. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs showed a smooth morphology for the Cs_P NFs membrane and a denser morphology for the CsF NFs membrane (NFs swelled with functionalization). The SEM micrographs also showed a dense cloud of TiO2 NPs on the surface of the Cs_Coa NFs membrane. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the particle size of TiO2 NPs varied between 20 and 35 nm and tended to be spherical. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the existence of the anatase phase of the TiO2 NPs. The presence of TiO2 in the Cs_Coa and Cs_Co NFs membranes was also confirmed by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Surface profilometry confirmed an increase in the surface roughness of the CsF and Cs_Coa NFs membranes. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed that the isotherms and hystereses for all NFs membranes were of the IV and H3 types, respectively, corresponding to mesopores and slit pores. The higher photocatalytic activity of the Cs_Coa NFs membrane (89%) compared to the Cs_Co NFs membrane (40%) was attributed to a balance between the short band gap, high surface roughness, and lower surface area

    Performance evaluation of a brackish water reverse osmosis pilot-plant desalination process under different operating conditions: Experimental study

    YesThe Reverse Osmosis (RO) input parameters have key roles in mass transport and performance indicators. Several studies can be found in open literature. However, an experimental research on evaluating the brackish water RO input parameters influence on the performance metrics with justifying the interference between them via a robust model has not been addressed yet. This paper aims to design, construct, and experimentally evaluate the performance of a 50 m3/d RO pilot-plant to desalinate brackish water in Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Iran. Water samples with various salinity ranging from 1000 to 5000 ppm were fed to a semi-permeable membrane under variable operating pressures from 5 to 13 bar. By evaluating permeate flux and brine flowrate, permeate and brine salinities, membrane water recovery, and salt rejection, some logical relations were derived. The results indicated that the performance of an RO unit is largely dependent on feed pressure and feed salinity. At a fixed feed concentration, an almost linear relationship was found to relate feed pressure and both permeate and brine flowrates. Statistically, it was found that 13 bar feed pressure results in a maximum salt rejection of 98.8% at a minimum permeate concentration of 12 ppm. Moreover, 73.3% reduction in permeate salinity and 30.8% increase in brine salinity are reported when feed pressure increases from 5 to 13 bar. Finally, it is concluded that the water transport coefficient is a function of feed pressure, salinity, and temperature, which is experimentally estimated to be 2.8552 L/(m2 h bar)

    Sustainable energy for national climate change, food security and employment opportunities: Implications for Nigeria

    YesThis paper looks into the issues around renewable energy with a view to identify the opportunities for Nigeria and critically review the nation’s renewable energy policy vis-`a-vis the efforts and achievement of governments and indigenous practitioners. It identified the inherent opportunities of renewable energy resources at ameliorating the incidents of climate change and global warming and also surveyed international statistics on the relationships between energy and renewable energy adoption, national development, population explosion, job creation and rural-urban integration. It found out that for Nigeria to sustain economic growth especially as it relates to agriculture and food security, renewable energy for power generation must be included in the nation’s rural development plan.     Career intentions, their influences and motivational factors in diagnostic radiography: A survey of undergraduate students

    YesThe choice of career and speciality can be a complex process. It is unclear what influences career decisions within undergraduate radiographers and whether the curriculum provides sufficient support. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was undertaken. All undergraduate diagnostic radiography students within one UK higher education institution were invited to participate. Questions were related to anticipated career choice, motivational factors and influences. Results: The response rate was 67.6% (90/133). The most popular specialist area for career preference was general radiography. The top three motivational factors were work life balance, career development and job satisfaction. The most influential factors on career choice were clinical placements, radiographers on placements and formal teaching. Career guidance was predominantly sourced from the personal academic tutor and was informed by role models. Conclusion: Radiography academic teams and clinical placement providers must work together to ensure that students have access to high quality placements across specialities. The experiences received during undergraduate training are important in specialty choice. Implications for practice: Career guidance is essential and should begin as early as possible.     A Bayesian network based study on determining the relationship between job stress and safety climate factors in occurrence of accidents.

    YesJob stress and safety climate have been recognized as two crucial factors that can increase the risk of occupational accidents. This study was performed to determine the relationship between job stress and safety climate factors in the occurrence of accidents using the Bayesian network model. This cross-sectional study was performed on 1530 male workers of Asaluyeh petrochemical company in Iran. The participants were asked to complete the questionnaires, including demographical information and accident history questionnaire, NIOSH generic job stress questionnaire, and Nordic safety climate questionnaire. Also, work experience and the accident history data were inquired from the petrochemical health unit. Finally, the relationships between the variables were investigated using the Bayesian network model. A high job stress condition could decrease the high safety climate from 53 to 37% and increase the accident occurrence from 72 to 94%. Moreover, a low safety climate condition could increase the accident occurrence from 72 to 93%. Also, the concurrent high job stress and low safety climate could raise the accident occurrence from 72 to 93%. Among the associations between the job stress factor and safety climate dimensions, the job stress and worker's safety priority and risk non-acceptance (0.19) had the highest mean influence value. The adverse effect of high job stress conditions on accident occurrence is twofold. It can directly increase the accident occurrence probability and in another way, it can indirectly increase the accident occurrence probability by causing the safety climate to go to a lower level

    A comparative study on weld characteristics of AA5083-H112 to AA6061-T6 sheets produced by MFSC and FSSW processes

    YesThis study's objective was to conduct a comparative analysis and characterization of the microstructural evolution within the weld nugget for joints of AA5083-H112 and AA6061-T6 produced by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) and modified friction stir clinching (MFSC) processes. The mechanical performance of the welded joints was assessed in shear using a single lap joint. The microstructural study identified significant variation in joint microstructure and material flow due to the differences in the tool geometry and methodology used for the welding processes. The results show that the use of modified friction clinching process improves the welded joint by eliminating keyholes/hook defects leading to the formation of high-strength joints. Mechanical characterization of the welded joints indicated that the shear strength increased significantly from 78.69 MPa for the conventional FSSW to 131 MPa for the MFSC process

    Psychological processes in adapting to dementia: illness representations among the IDEAL cohort

    YesHow people understand and adapt to living with dementia may influence well-being. Leventhal’s Common Sense Model (CSM) of Self-Regulation provides a theoretical basis for exploring this process. We used cross-sectional and longitudinal data from 1,109 people with mild-to-moderate dementia in the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) cohort. We elicited dementia representations (DRs) using the Representations and Adjustment to Dementia Index (RADIX), a validated measure based on the CSM, identified groups sharing distinct DR profiles, and explored predictors of group membership and associations with well-being, and whether problem-focused coping played a mediating role in these associations. We identified four DR classes: people who see the condition as a disease and adopt a diagnostic label; people who see the condition as a disease but refer to symptoms rather than a diagnostic label; those who see the condition as part of aging; and those who are unsure how to make sense of the condition. A fifth group did not acknowledge any difficulties. “Disease” representations were associated with better cognition and younger age, while “aging” and “no problem” representations were associated with better mood and well-being. The association with well-being remained stable over 24 months. There was limited partial support for a mediating role of problem-focused coping. Variations in DRs may reflect individual differences in the psychological processes involved in adjusting to dementia. DRs provide a framework for personalizing and tailoring both communications about dementia and interventions aimed at supporting people in coping with dementia. There is a need to debate what constitutes a positive DR and how its development might be encouraged
