Seismic response of grid tubular-double steel plate concrete composite shear walls and combined system subjected to low reversed cyclic loading
YesIn order to improve the efficiency of the structural lateral resistance system, a new type of Grid tubular-Double Steel Plate (GDSP) concrete composite shear walls is proposed and investigated in this paper. Six test specimens, namely one reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall, three GDSP concrete composite shear walls, one concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) frame, one CFST frame and GDSP concrete composite shear wall combined system were physically tested to failure. The seismic performance of the six test specimens, including hysteresis behavior, ductility, energy dissipation, degradation of stiffness and strength, are recorded and compared. The results show that the GDSP concrete composite shear walls exhibited typical bending failure under low reversed cycle loading, achieving good seismic performance with full hysteresis curve, high bearing capacity, excellent ductility, slow degradation of stiffness and bearing capacity. Under the same axial compression ratio, the yield load of GDSP concrete composite shear wall was about 2.73 times, whilst the peak load was 3.23 times, respectively, of those of RC shear wall. On the other hand, the peak displacement of GDSP concrete composite shear wall was 5 times while ultimate displacement was 3.86 times, respectively, of those of RC shear wall. For GDSP concrete composite shear walls, with the increase of axial compression ratio, the peak load of the new types of concrete composite shear wall increases, but the ductility decreases, gradually. The CFST frame and GDSP concrete composite shear wall can work together co-ordinately. The hysteretic curve of the combined system is fuller, the ductility is improved, the degradation of stiffness and strength are slow when compared with GDSP concrete composite shear wall. The role and experiences of responders attending the sudden or unexpected death of a child: a systematic review and meta-synthesis
YesThe infrequency of sudden deaths means that professionals have limited exposure, making it difficult to gain experience and feel confident in their role. This meta-synthesis aims to synthesise qualitative research on the experience of professionals responding to cases of sudden or unexpected death. A systematic literature search was conducted using Academic Search Complete, CINHAL, Embase, psycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science, identifying ten papers for inclusion. Studies were appraised and synthesized using the principles of meta‐synthesis. Four
superordinate themes were identified: perceptions of role, experience on scene, approaches to coping, and barriers to support. Findings suggest the way responders perceive their role and their experience on scene affect the approach taken to tasks and coping strategies used. The complexity of experience is often not acknowledged by responders or their colleagues.
Experiences are compounded by cumulative factors which were expressed by different professional groups and across settings. Several barriers relating to workforce culture within organisations were identified, alongside the implications these have on staff wellbeing and the impact on bereaved families
Structure and diffusive dynamics of aspartate α-decarboxylase (ADC) liganded with d-serine in aqueous solution
YesIncoherent neutron spectroscopy, in combination with dynamic light scattering, was used to investigate the effect of ligand binding on the center-of-mass self-diffusion and internal diffusive dynamics of Escherichia coli aspartate α-decarboxylase (ADC). The X-ray crystal structure of ADC in complex with the D-serine inhibitor was also determined, and molecular dynamics simulations were used to further probe the structural rearrangements that occur as a result of ligand binding. These experiments reveal that D-serine forms hydrogen bonds with some of the active site residues, that higher order oligomers of the ADC tetramer exist on ns–ms time-scales, and also show that ligand binding both affects the ADC internal diffusive dynamics and appears to further increase the size of the higher order oligomers.TR acknowledges a PhD studentship jointly funded by the ILL and the Universität Hamburg (Federal Excellence Cluster Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging EXC 1074)
The Geochemistry of Submerged Marine Landscapes: Lipid, Isotopic and Inorganic composition of Sediment Cores from the Palaeo-landscape of Doggerland
Ten thousand years ago Great Britain was a part of the European continent, where the surface of the North Sea was about 70 metres below present sea level. The large, prehistoric submerged landmass that connected the island of Great Britain to the European continent is now widely known as Doggerland. 85 samples from six different cores, which were collected from this prehistoric landscape, were studied using multi proxy -organic and inorganic- geochemical methods. Thermal analysis determined the organic matter and carbonate content, which were utilized as characterizing indices, dividing each core into various depositional units. In addition, lipid analysis studying three sets of biomarkers (n-alkanes, fatty acids and sterols), was used to distinguish between various depositional environments, especially between terrestrial and aquatic. Furthermore, the cores were mineralogically analysed using the detected clay and non-clay minerals as depositional indicators; significant states such as high and low energy environments, palaeosoil, type of weathering and stone types were identified and used to recognize any mineralogical and thus depositional alteration. Finally, the sulfur isotope analysis identified different sources of sulfur, which were then used as environmental distinguishing proxies. An integration of these analytical results provided a detailed geochemical history of each core; importantly, a Storegga tsunami deposit was detected in core ELF01A. The primary contribution of this thesis was establishing an analytical approach using combined results from a range of analytical methods. Anticancer water-soluble organoruthenium complexes: synthesis and preclinical evaluation
YesThe synthesis, characterisation, and evaluation of the in vitro cytotoxicity of five maleonitriledithiolate-based ruthenium metal complexes bearing various phosphine ligands towards two ovarian cancer cell lines (A2780 and A2780cisR), one non-small-cell lung cancer cell line (H460) and one normal prostate cell line (PNT2) are presented herein. These 18-electron complexes were designed with four water-soluble phosphine ligands to increase the water-solubility character of the corresponding electron-deficient ruthenium complex which showed great in vitro promises, and triphenylphosphine for comparison. The complexes with triphenylphosphine-3,3',3''trisulfonic acid and triphenylphosphine present similar cytotoxicity compared to the 16-electron precursor, with equal cytotoxicity to both A2780 and A2780cisR. Hints at the mechanism of action suggest an apoptotic pathway based on ROS production. Glucose level detection using millimetre-wave metamaterial-inspired resonator
YesMillimetre-wave frequencies are promising for sensitive detection of glucose levels in the blood, where the temperature effect is insignificant. All these features provide the feasibility of continuous, portable, and accurate monitoring of glucose levels. This paper presents a metamaterial-inspired resonator comprising five split-rings to detect glucose levels at 24.9 GHz. The plexiglass case containing blood is modelled on the sensor's surface and the structure is simulated for the glucose levels in blood from 50 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl. The novelty of the sensor is demonstrated by the capability to sense the normal glucose levels at millimetre-wave frequencies. The dielectric characteristics of the blood are modelled by using the Debye parameters. The proposed design can detect small changes in the dielectric properties of blood caused by varying glucose levels. The variation in the transmission coefficient for each glucose level tested in this study is determined by the quality factor and resonant frequency. The sensor presented can detect the change in the quality factor of transmission response up to 2.71/mg/dl. The sensor's performance has also been tested to detect diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome. The sensor showed a linear shift in resonant frequency with the change in glucose levels, and an R2 of 0.9976 was obtained by applying regression analysis. The WordPress Workshop: Blogging as a Method for Theory Development
YesBlogs have proven to be a useful tool for academics as a tool for education and outreach in the Digital Age, with much written about their effectiveness in the classroom and as alternative means of publishing research. However, less consideration has been given to utilising the blog format for developing theory, particularly for graduate students and early career researchers. This paper will draw on both recent literature and personal experience to explore the potential of blogging as a means of introducing and developing unconventional and radical theory and research prior to more "formal" publication
Fish Bones, Isotopes, and Microscopes: A Pilot Study in Applying Analytical Methods to Iron Age Faunal Remains
YesPrevious research on the Iron Age in Britain has argued that no fishing occurred during this period in Britain. This argument has now been complicated by large assemblages of fish bones that have been excavated from Iron Age sites in the Northern Isles. Further investigation into this issue became the focus of the author's MSc dissertation research in 2016, specifically on the recently excavated fish bone assemblages from the site of Swandro on Rousay, Orkney. Analytical methods, including stable isotope analysis and scanning electron microscopy, were applied in an attempt to determine how the fish may have been utilised at the site. Results have revealed evidence that could be interpreted as fishing activity and possible consumption by humans at Swandro. This paper disseminates and further examines these results and considers how this particular project is useful as a pilot study in the application of analytical methodologies to problematic faunal remains such as fish, and why this could be important to future zooarchaeological and environmental archaeological research
A New mm-Wave Antenna Array with Wideband Characteristics for Next Generation Communication Systems
YesThis paper presents a planar multi-circular loop antenna with a wide impedance bandwidth for next generation mm-wave systems. The proposed antenna comprises three circular rings with a partial ground plane with a square slot. The resonating structure is designed on a 0.254 mm thin RO5880 substrate with a relative permittivity of 2.3. The single element of the proposed design
showed a resonance response from 26.5 to 41 GHz, with a peak gain of 4 dBi and radiation efficiency of 96%. The proposed multicircular ring antenna element is transformed into a four-element array system. The array size is kept at 18.25 × 12.5 × 0.254 mm3 with a peak gain of 11 dBi. The antenna array is fabricated and measured using the in-house facility. The simulated and measured results are well agreed upon and are found to be suitable for mm-wave communication systems
Women’s experiences of immigration detention in Italy: examining immigration procedural fairness, human dignity, and health
YesRecent decades have witnessed a growing number of states around the world relying on border control measures, such as immigration detention, to govern human mobility and control the movements of those classified as “unauthorised non-citizens.” In response to this, an increasing number of scholars from several disciplines, including psychologists, have begun to examine this phenomenon. In spite of the widespread concerns raised, few studies have been conducted inside immigration detention sites, primarily due to difficulties in gaining access. This body of research becomes even scanter when it comes to the experiences of detained women. This study is the first of its kind to have surveyed 93 women confined in an Italian immigration detention facility. A partial mediation model with latent variables was tested through partial least structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings revealed the negative impact that unfair immigration procedures have on detained women’s human dignity, which in turn negatively affects their self-rated physical and mental health. Overall, our study sheds light on the dehumanisation and damage to human dignity that immigration detention entails, as well as its negative impact on the health of those affected.
