The Integration of IVUS and OCT

    No full text
Ultrasound and optical coherence tomography (OCT) provide complementary capabilities-ultrasound has high penetration depth but low resolution; OCT has high resolution but low penetration depth. The integration of these two technologies enable superior imaging capabilities for intravascular applications.Jiawen Li, Teng Ma, Qifa Zhou and Zhongping Che

Target recognition by means of polarimetric ISAR images

    No full text
Automatic target recognition (ATR) is generally the reason why inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging systems are employed. Moreover, the use of fully polarimetric radar systems in radar imaging applications such as SAR and ISAR has enhanced both image quality and classification capabilities. The authors propose a novel technique for ATR using polarimetric ISAR (Pol-ISAR) images. The proposed method is based on a model matching approach. Results are obtained that show the effectiveness of such a technique.M. Martorella, E. Giusti, L. Demi, Z. Zhou, A. Cacciamano, F. Berizzi, B. Bate

    Engaging Material Education in Design

    No full text
OVERVIEW: For years now, design students have started to hold a conscious dialogue with materials, especially considering materials and their experiential attributes as designable elements. However, the design education focused on materials still struggles to keep pace with the practical needs of future designers and contradicts the technological and material world where we live. This study aims to comprehend the dynamic role materials play in design education and propose a feasible pedagogical framework based on the concept of materials experience. Through two consistent studies where the materials courses and their results in design schools are analysed, the research has worked out the corresponding material innovation patterns and highlighted the relevant design capacity. Then, the hypothesis of the pedagogical framework is proposed, with its feasibility verified in a real classroom to conclude the research

Limit periodic upper and lower solutions in a generic sense

    No full text
The method of upper and lower solutions is a main tool to prove the existence of periodic solutions to periodic differential equations. It is known that, in general, the method does not extend to the almost periodic case. The aim of the present paper is to show that, however, something interesting survives: if the classical assumptions of the method are satisfied, then the expected existence result holds generically in the limit periodic framework

Rail Condition Monitoring using Axle Box Acceleration Measurements: Defect detection in the Netherlands and Romania

    No full text
In this paper we discuss rail condition monitoring based on axle box acceleration (ABA) measurements. We present three case studies. The first one in The Netherlands, the detection of local defects with different severity levels (squat A, squat B and squat C) is analysed. The second case from the Faurei testing ring in Romania, the detection of rail defects over the whole testing ring is presented and examples of responses at a local defect (wheel-burn) is discussed with measurements at 80km/h (conventional speed measurement) and 200km/h (high speed measurement). In the third case, ABA measurements were obtained during operation in a train with passengers in the railway line near Brasov, Bartolomeu-Zărneşti. Examples of the defects and validations are discussed.Railway Engineerin
