SLOPE Phase 2: sponsors’ third field workshop, Laingsburg Karoo, South Africa
Outcrops of the Permian ecca Group in the southwestern Karoo basin are outstandingly well exposed and easily accessible. Present day erosion allows viewing of laterally continuous (tens of kilometres) outcrops in the Tanqua and Laingsburg depocentres. Key objectives of this report are:
-To illustrate the downdip and across-strike changes in facies, incisional styles, channel dimensions,in-complex and out-of-complex net:gross variations and the internal stratigraphy of Unit C and D;
-Discussion of seismically resolvable surfaces, geometries and volumes and uncertainties in estimating facies, net:gross and reservoir quality from seismic alone;
to build further on the Vischkuil story, variability of MTDs, run out distances, etc. and to discuss the effects of depositional vs tectonic topography on facies, geometries and thichness of lower Fan A;
-Examination of different types of channel, channel complex, and channel complex set, related to different profile positions. Discussion on the relative amounts of lateral spill vs bypass vs in-channel aggradation and the implications for axis to margin to overbank sand connectivity;
-To introduce and debate a sequence stratigraphic hierarchy for the slope succession

Computational modelling of mobile bearing TKA anterior–posterior dislocation
Anterior-posterior stability in an unconstrained mobile-bearing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and one with rotational constraints is compared in a computational model based on an ASTM test. Both TKA designs dislocate at loads greater than reported maximum in vivo forces. The posterior drawer forces (mean: 3027 N vs. 1817 N) needed to induce subluxation increase with a greater anterior jump distance (12 mm vs. 7 mm; refers to the vertical height of the anterior or posterior border of the tibial insert's articulating surface). The posterior jump distance for both tested TKA differed by 1.5 mm and had minimal effect on the magnitude of the anterior drawer forces at dislocation in mid-flexion (unconstrained vs. constrained: 445 N vs. 412 N). The unconstrained insert dislocated by means of spin-out whereas in the constrained TKA the femur dislocated from the bearing during posterior drawer and the bearing from the baseplate during anterior drawer. MCL function is an important consideration during ligament balancing since a ± 10% variation in MCL tension affects dislocation forces by ± 20%. The simulation platform provided the means to investigate TKA designs in terms of anterior-posterior stability as a function of knee flexion, collateral ligament function and mechanical morphology
Rotatory knee laxity tests and the pivot shift as tools for ACL treatment algorithm.
The goal of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery is to eliminate the pivot shift phenomenon. Different injury mechanisms and injury patterns may lead to specific knee laxity patterns. Computer navigation is helpful for the surgeon during examination under anesthesia. Surgical treatment may have to be altered if high-grade laxity is detected preoperatively for example by utilizing a computer navigation that is a helpful adjunct for surgeons during examination under anesthesia. A typical case for revision ACL reconstruction is presented. This article describes several techniques of laxity assessments. Based on the type and degree of pathologic laxity, a treatment algorithm has been developed.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: V
Recognition of cultural differences
In hierdie bydrae gaan
daar egter spesifiek gefokus word op die problematiek van erkenning van kulturele verskille omdat
dit in hedendaagse samelewings so 'n belangrike rol speel.
The demand for the recognition of cultural differences is central to a number of debates associated
with multiculturalism. Following Charles Taylors analysis of the relation between modernity and
cultural pluralism, it is argued that the demand of cultural relativism, namely that the equal value
of cultures should be recognised, is not justifiable. This however should not serve as an excuse for
underestimating the significance of cultural differences or for ethnocentric indifference towards
claims for recognition. The prerequisites for claims towards recognition are further explored by
distinguishing between two justifiable claims: on the one hand the claim that the right to differ
should be recognised and on the other hand the claim that the inherent value of the difference
should be recognised. It is argued that the possibilities of granting recognition are in most cases
restricted to the first claim. Although the second claim may also be justified, it is in most cases not
possible to meet it. The conclusion is that we encounter an aporetic ground for both cultural critique
and intercultural tolerance; in fact a better ground for tolerance than cultural relativism which
easily leads to indifference.Publisher's versio
Gediagnoseerde kankerpasiënte se beskouings van psigo-opvoedkundige intervensies in psigo-onkologiese ondersteuning
MEd (Opvoedkundige Sielkunde), North-West University, Potchefstroom CampusThe aim of this qualitative exploratory study was to investigate and describe the views of cancer patients regarding psycho-educational interventions during their cancer treatment. The conceptual framework that supports this study was guided by a constructivist-interpretivist perspective, and the study is approached through the lens of the hope theory. A purposeful sampling strategy was used to select participants who had all previously been diagnosed with cancer but were, at the time of the research, in full remission. The participants’ interests were taken into account by voluntary participation and obtaining informed consent before the data collection process began. The data collection process consisted of focus groups, and data saturation occurred after two focus group interviews were held. The nine participants in the focus groups shared their experience with cancer and identified shortcomings related to psycho-educational interventions. The findings suggest that psycho-educational interventions may be significant in psycho-oncological support. Most of the participants indicated that this type of support falls short and that the training and education of cancer-related aspects, especially the psychological aspects thereof, are of importance.Master

Strategic marketing planning for radio stations in Lesotho
Thesis (Ph.D.(Business Management))--University of the Free State, 2007This research study advocates that radio stations in Lesotho should make full use of the benefits offered by marketing both as a philosophy and a business function. The research study also recommends that the radio stations in Lesotho use the strategic marketing planning steps and approach that have been prescribed throughout this project, that is, the development of a mission statement, corporate objectives, situation analysis, competitor analysis, and marketing objectives
Xenograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction was associated with high graft processing infection
Purpose: To evaluate clinical ad radiological outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with an immunochemically modified porcine patellar tendon xenograft controlled against human Achilles tendon allograft at 24-month minimum follow-up. Methods: 66 patients undergoing arthroscopic ACL reconstruction were randomized into 2 groups: 34 allografts and 32 xenografts treated to attenuate the host immune response. Follow-up was 24-month minimum. Anterior knee stability was measured as KT − 1000 side-to-side laxity difference (respect to the contralateral healthy knee). Functional performance was assessed by one-legged hop test. Objective manual pivot-shift test and subjective (IKDC, Tegner and SF-36) outcomes were collected. MRI and standard X-Ray were performed. Results: 61 subjects (32 allograft, 29 xenograft) were evaluated at 12 and 24 months. Six of the subjects in xenograft group (20.6%) got an infection attributed to a water-based pathogen graft contamination in processing. Intention-to-treat analysis (using the last observation carried forward imputation method) revealed higher KT − 1000 laxity in xenograft group at 24-month follow-up (P =.042). Also pivot-shift was higher in xenograft group at 12-month (P =.015) and 24-month follow-up (P =.038). Per-protocol analysis (missing/contaminated subjects excluded) did not revealed clinical differences between groups. Tibial tunnel widening in the allograft group was low, whereas xenograft tunnel widening was within the expected range of 20–35% as reported in the literature. No immunological reactivity was associated to xenograft group. Conclusions: High infection rate (20.6%) was reported in xenograft group. Both groups of patients achieved comparable clinical outcomes if missing/contaminated subjects are excluded. Improved harvesting/processing treatments in future studies using xenografts for ACL reconstruction are needed to reduce infection rate, otherwise xenograft should not be used in ACL reconstruction.
