The determinants of the readiness to let go among senior generation owner-managers of small and medium-sized family businesses
The objective of this study was to assess the determinants of the readiness of the senior generation owner-managers to finally transfer the management and control of the family business to the younger generation. Data from 504 questionnaires linked to 81 family businesses were collected and analysed. An Oblimin oblique rotation was carried out on the principal components of the exploratory factor analysis. Five factors with eigen-values greater than one, explaining 62.64 per cent of the variance, were extracted. These five factors describing the theoretical dimensions of the dependent variable were: the senior generation owner-manager’s readiness to let go, and the independent variables of retirement planning, perceived suitability of the successor, estate planning, and the perceived liquidity of the business after the transfer. No significant practical differences relating to these five factors could be found between the perceptions of male and female respondents, the senior and younger generation family members or family members involved in medium-sized or small businesses. Practical recommendations are suggested to ensure a smooth final transfer of the management and control of the business to the younger generation family members

The assessment of the family vision generation process in small and medium-sized family businesses
The objective of this study was to assess the family vision generation process in small and medium-sized family businesses. Data from 489 questionnaires administered to 79 family businesses were collected and analysed. An Oblimin oblique rotation was performed on the principal components of the exploratory factor analysis. Three factors with eigenvalues greater than one were extracted, explaining 61.93% of the variance, describing the theoretical dimensions of the generation of the family vision, the commitment of the younger generation family members to family business continuity and the commitment of the senior generation family members to family business continuity. The results of this study indicate that a significant proportion of the variation in the generation of the family vision is explained by the commitment of the senior and younger generation family members to family business continuity. No practically significant differences in the mean values could be found between the three extracted factors and the demographic variables in this study. Recommendations are offered to utilise the questionnaire as a measuring instrument. Practical recommendations are suggested to ensure an effective family vision generation process in small and medium-sized family businesses.http://search.sabinet.co.za/WebZ/Authorize?sessionid=0&next=ej/ej_content_sabr.html&bad=error/authofail.htm
Development of a guidance and Intra-Arterial flow monitoring catheter
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2016.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis entails the development and testing of devices that can aid in
guiding a needle into a blood vessel. Furthermore, a concept flow meter is
also developed and tested. Physicians often have difficulty placing a needle in
blood vessels. For a number of procedures access to blood vessels are required.
Investigating methods to ease this process is thus beneficial to the medical
field. Likewise, measuring blood flow is also of importance in the medical
field. Measuring blood flow to the brain can prevent brain ischemia, which
can lead to death of brain tissue.
Near infrared (NIR) light is used to guide the needle towards a blood vessel.
Two optic fibre strands are placed inside the needle, one to transmit NIR light
and one to receive reflected light. The reflected light, when pointing at blood,
is different from other tissue types. The in vitro and in vivo tests both showed
that there is a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in reflected light
when pointing at and away from a blood vessel.
Electrical impedance is used to determine when the needle enters a blood
vessel. A sine wave is generated and passed through biological tissue. The
measured impedance is different for blood and other tissue types. It was found
that when a signal of 29.85 kHz was used, there was a statistically significant
difference (p < 0.001) between blood and muscle and blood and fat.
The flow meter works on the principle of thermal convection. The concept
device that is developed, has an ambient temperature sensor and a second
temperature sensor wrapped in a heating coil. In the presence of fluid flow, heat
is carried away from the heater by thermal convection, causing a temperature
drop. The device was tested in vitro in distilled water flow and blood flow at
flow rates between 0.1 ml/s and 0.45 ml/s. Both the fluids had high variances
in the temperature difference between the ambient and heater temperature. By
removing the offsets, clear trends become visible. For the distilled water tests,
a fit in the tested flow region was obtained with a coefficient of determination
of R2 = 0:9801. The blood tests however were more erratic and the best fit
that could be obtained had a coefficient of determination of R2 = 0:6056. In
both cases however, CFD results indicate that this method is a viable method
if some of the flow meter design aspects are improved.
The results indicate that a combination of the aforementioned technologies
can be used to guide a needle into a blood vessel and measure flow rate. While
further investigation is required to make this a product in the medical practice,
the investigation in this thesis serves as a basis for future clinical trials in the
development of a guidance and intra-arterial flow monitoring catheter.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tesis behels die ontwikkeling en toets van toestelle wat ’n naald kan lei tot in
’n bloedvat.
toe.
Wanneer ’n vloeistof oor

An investigation of the determinants of estate and retirement planning in intergenerational family businesses
This study highlighted the importance of estate and retirement planning in small and medium-sized family businesses. Data from 504 questionnaires linked to 81 family businesses were collected and analysed. An Oblimin oblique rotation was performed on the principal components of the exploratory factor analysis. Five factors with eigenvalues greater than one, explaining 65.78% of the variance, were extracted. These five factors describing the theoretical dimensions of retirement planning, perceived fairness of the will, estate taxes, perceived liquidity of the business after succession and acquiring equity ownership were extracted. No practical significant differences could be found between the perceptions of male and female respondents as well as between family members involved in medium-sized or small businesses with regard to the five factors. Practical recommendations are suggested to ensure a smooth final transfer of the management and control of the business to the next generation family members.http://search.sabinet.co.za/WebZ/Authorize?sessionid=0&next=ej/ej_content_busman.html&bad=error/authofail.htm

The impact of Blue Flag status on tourist decision-making when selecting a beach
The Blue Flag programme holds many benefits when looking from a conservation point of view, such as preserving the natural environment. But what are the benefits when looking from a tourism perspective? In the literature it is stated that a beach’s Blue Flag status has little to no impact on the decision making of visitors when selecting a beach at which to spend their holiday. The aim of this article is to determine the impact of Blue Flag status on visitors’ decision-making when selecting a beach. Probability sampling was used with systematic sampling methods. A survey was conducted from between March and April, 2013 at six beaches across the Margate area. A total of 572 usable questionnaires were collected. The results showed whether or not a beach has Blue Flag status has little influence on the decision-making of beach visitors as little difference was found between the decision-making aspects of Blue Flag and non-Blue Flag beach visitors. It was noted that aspects of importance for decision-making for both groups of visitors form mostly part of the criteria set by the Blue Flag programme.
This article makes three main contributions to the current literature; firstly, new information was identified regarding the role of the Blue Flag programme and what visitors are looking for when selecting a beach. Secondly, important aspects considered by visitors selecting a beach, such as cleanliness, landscape and popularity are identified. Lastly, this was the first time such research was conducted within a South African setting.http://www.ajhtl.com

Factors influencing a memorable game viewing experience
Not on Sherpa or Masterfile. On journal website it says: This is an open-access journal - free use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium is allowed, provided that the journal, and original author/s are credited. One of the most important aspects in selling tourism products is to provide tourists with a memorable experience. In the case of South Africa, most of the tourism product offerings are nature or wildlife based, with South African National Parks as one of the biggest contributors to the wildlife tourism product offering. The two most preferred methods to engage with wildlife is self-drive game viewing and making use of operators in safari vehicles for guided game viewing. The purpose of this article is therefore to determine which factors determine a memorable game viewing experience in each of the abovementioned options, namely self-drive and guided viewing. A quantitative research method was used by means of a web-based survey.
The survey was posted on the official website of South African National Parks. A total of 387 usable questionnaires were received back during this time frame. The results indicated that wildlife ambiance and interpretation are fundamental in having a memorable game viewing experience for self-drive game viewing and guided game viewing in safari vehicles, respectively. This article makes two main contributions to the current literature: Firstly, it has found that national park management do have limited control over some factors (for example species variety, species numbers and infrastructure) which require good management in order to provide tourists with a memorable experience; and secondly, it is the first time that memorable wildlife experience has been determined concerning land-based wildlife and within South African National Parks.http://www.ajhtl.com/uploads/7/1/6/3/7163688/article_7_vol._3_2_july.pd
