An early alert feedback system in learning

The fields of teaching and learning are evolving as a result of new techniques like blended-, online-, and exploratory learning being implemented. Lecturers need to ensure successful teaching and also create an environment in which students can learn effectively. Two important factors that a lecturer can control to enhance learning are instruction and feedback. A learning analytics system was developed for the latter, utilizing mathematical programming models, which enables a lecturer to provide real-time progress feedback to students at regular intervals during the course of a program. This paper highlights flaws identified in some existing feedback scenarios, discusses the development of an electronic feedback system, and explains how its implementation can keep students informed on their progress from an early stage of instruction and present them with actionable targets for reaching their ultimate goa

A diet expert system utilizing linear programming models in a rule-based inference engine

    No full text
Linear programming is commonly used for solving complex problems in various fields, such as dietetics. Expert systems use expertise and inference procedures to solve problems that require advanced expert knowledge and are also applied to health related problems. Over the years many variations and facets of the diet problem and other related problems have been solved by means of linear programming techniques as well as expert systems. In this research, an expert system was created for the purpose of solving multiple facets of the diet problem, by creating a rule-based inference engine consisting of goal programming- and multi-objective linear programming models. The program was successfully applied to case studies specific to South African teenage girls, which were obtained through the knowledge acquisition phase. The resulting system compiles an eating-plan for a girl that conforms to the nutritional requirements of a healthy diet, includes the personal food preferences of the girl, and consists of food items that result in the lowest total cost. The system also allows prioritization of the food preference and least cost factors by means of weighted priorities

A prescriptive specialized learning management system for academic feedback towards improved learning

The dynamic nature of technological advances is causing changes in many fields and especially in tertiary education. Student numbers are increasing annually and institutions need to maintain education quality whilst ensuring student retention. A specialized learning management system (SLMS) was developed in this study that provides students with comprehensive feedback which will enable them to better manage their academic performance. It will also assist institutions/lecturers in identifying at-risk students early in a semester to facilitate retention. The system uses a prescriptive analytics engine implemented by means of mathematical modelling techniques together with an algorithmic approach to process academic student data in realtime. Feedback is delivered timely and is comprehensive in the sense that it presents students with individualized instructions towards improvement in a module. The system was implemented in a field test and evaluated according to validation criteria established from a literature study on related research efforts. A survey was conducted to measure user response in terms of the identified factors. The results showed that the SLMS conforms to the attributes essential to an action-recommender system and was favorably accepted by the target user

Sentencing in Botswana a comparative analysis of law and practice

Thesis (LLD)--University of Pretoria, 2016.This thesis considers capital punishment, corporal punishment and mandatory minimum sentencing in Botswana and the continued usefulness of these three sentencing options. The thesis adopts a comparative approach. Firstly, the thesis examines the abolition of capital punishment in South Africa, and the United Kingdom, as well as inroads made in the manner of application of capital punishment in retentionist commonwealth Caribbean states. Secondly, the process leading to prohibition of judicial corporal punishment in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, England and Wales, as well as the United States is analysed. Thirdly, the thesis considers mandatory minimum sentencing in South Africa, England and Wales and Australia. The imposition of judicial corporal punishment on juvenile offenders is also examined. Alternative sanctions that may replace these sentencing options are investigated. The findings are that the selected sentencing options fall short of international human rights standards and, in particular the right to life and the right to human dignity. The primacy of these rights is notable in sentencing law and practice of each comparative jurisdiction. The promovenda identifies current barriers to dispensing with these sentencing options in Botswana. Drawing from the comparative jurisprudence, she proposes how Botswana may successfully achieve abolition of the death penalty, prohibition of judicial corporal punishment and improvement of the mandatory minimum sentencing regime. Recommendations are also made for suitable alternative sanctions such as life imprisonment, correctional supervision and restorative justice approaches to sentencing of adult and juvenile offenders, which, if incorporated, will advance sentencing law in Botswana.Procedural LawLLDUnrestricte
