Operational performance of two-stage food production systems : process interactions and capacitated storage

    Get PDF
The food sector has seen several important developments in recent years. First, competition has become fiercer because of the increased market power of food retailing. Secondly, quality legislation has become more stringent due to a growing concern for food safety throughout the society. Third, sustainable production has become more important, and organizations are held responsible for the environmental performance of their production system. In this thesis, several aspects of these developments are studied from an Operations Management perspective. Specific questions that are addressed are: * What are the implications of capacity- and time-constrained intermediate storage on production performance? * What are the performance implications of demand characteristics like high product mix variability and lead time reductions? * How do planning decisions and process configurations influence the realization of product losses The results provide insight in the operational performance of two-stage food production systems with intermediate storage. This performance not only entails competitiveness (through the insights on lead time performance), but also sustainability (through the insight in realization of product losses).

Planning and scheduling in process industries considering industry-specific characteristics

ABSTRACT: The process industry has experienced growing logistical demands, growing variety in products, and more intense competition. These all together have steered the industry towards a strong focus on efficient planning and scheduling practices. The process industry has a specific set of product and process characteristics which have significant impacts on the management of production operations. These involve considerations regarding raw material availability and yield, flexible product recipes, perishable materials, traceability requirements, storage capacity limitations, and production setups. These characteristics are practically important for their own sakes. However, in many production environments, a subset of these appears together. Therefore, planning and scheduling often concerns the combination of several industry-specific characteristics and also the interactions between them. The literature offers a variety of models and methods which take into account these characteristics individually. Nevertheless, the relationship between them has not been fully addressed. The research presented in this thesis can be regarded as an attempt to fill this gap. It addresses particular problems of practical interest originating from specific production environments, and present new integrative approaches thereof while making use of both optimal and heuristic procedures based on well-grounded optimization methods.

Make-to-order and make-to-stock in food processing industries

Treating planning flows in patient flows

Understanding how organisational characteristics of UK contact centres impact their scope for innovation

    Get PDF
Advances in information and communications technology (ICT) has allowed the location of contact centres to be disjointed from the country they are providing service to, resulting in the UK having to compete with other countries as a location for contact centres, but the UK industry cannot match the low labour cost of many offshore locations. This means that the UK contact centres have to now compete on other factors rather than cost. There are many ways in which organisations can compete but one of the key ways for developed economies to compete is through increased innovation. Therefore the aim of the research is to examine how UK contact centres approach innovation. The research is carried out through a structured methodology of a systematic literature review and comparative case studies. The main findings of the research are that UK contact centres approach innovation in two main ways, either structured or ad-hoc and that they are involved in a range of different types of innovation, with the aim innovation type being process innovation

Combined make-to-order and make-to-stock in a food production system

The research into multi-product production/inventory control systems has mainly assumed one of the two strategies: Make-to-Order (MTO) or Make-to-Stock (MTS). In practice, however, many companies cater to an increasing variety of products with varying logistical demands (e.g. short due dates, specific products) and production characteristics (e.g. capacity usage, setup) to different market segments and so they are moving to more MTO-production. As a consequence they operate under a hybrid MTO-MTS strategy. Important issues arising out of such situations are, for example, which products should be manufactured to stock and which ones on order and, how to allocate capacity among various MTO-MTS products. This paper presents the state-of-the-art literature review of the combined MTO-MTS production situations. A variety of production management issues in the context of food processing companies, where combined MTO-MTS production is quite common, are discussed in details. The authors propose a comprehensive hierarchical planning framework that covers the important production management decisions to serve as a starting point for evaluation and further research on the planning system for MTO-MTS situations.

The future of resilient supply chains

    Get PDF
While supply chain resilience has been touched upon frequently, research remains (with the exception of often repeated anecdotal examples) relatively disparate on what disruptions actually are. This research aims to advance theoretical and managerial understandings around the management of supply chain disruptions. A two-stage research process is used which focuses first on polling academic experts. This stage is followed by the extraction of insights from practitioners in the automotive, electronics and food industries. Our findings coalesce around: (1) the types of disruptions that respondents are most concerned about; (2) the associated strategies suggested to cope with disruptions; and, (3) how resilience can be measured. It is apparent that there are some areas where academics and practitioners agree and others where they agree to a lesser extent. Both sets of actors tend to agree on how resilience can be quantified, with recovery time the preferred indicator. However, there is a discrepancy around how resilience is achieved within the supply chain. Academics emphasise the importance of redundancy while practitioners refer more to flexibility. Also, they disagree around what constitutes “key disruptions”: academics suggested high-profile events, while practitioners are more concerned with day-to-day problems

Buyer focus: evaluation of a new concept for supply chain integration

The goal of integrated supply chains is to remove barriers to ease the flow of materials and information. This article concentrates on an important barrier: shared resources in a supply chain. The removal of these shared resources is closely related to the recently introduced concept of buyer focus. Buyer focus is described as the singling out of resources in order to supply one buyer along the whole range of its products. The value of buyer focus for supply chain integration is evaluated and in two cases illustrated. This article suggests that there are two extreme configurations in supply chains. On the one hand, suppliers with buyer-focused operations to enable high levels of integration in order to cope with uncertainty in volume, mix and leadtime. On the other hand, shared resources and low levels of integration, which are more likely in supply chains that are dominantly cost driven.

The Role of ICT in Supply Chains

    Get PDF
Many companies struggle with the question how to make effective use of information and communication technology (ICT) in their supply chains. Also, the literature is not conclusive with respect to the mechanisms and context factors that determine the success of ICT in the supply chain. This thesis elaborates upon the struggle to make ICT effective. The impact of ICT on supply chain (SC) performance is examined from the perspective that ICT business value is generated by the deployment of ICT and complementary resources within supply chain processes. Moreover, this thesis studies the role of external context factors in the generation of ICT business value in the supply chain. The thesis analyses survey based literature to conclude that ICT is often too broadly measured, ignoring the different effects of particular types of technologies and ignoring relevant contextual factors. Moreover, current research mainly focuses on the path ICT-SCM-SC performance, neglecting possible interaction between the constructs. Two empirical chapters address those shortcomings by analyzing the empirical data obtained through a survey conducted among Chinese manufacturing companies. First, the thesis provides evidence that intra-organizational and inter-organizational ICT improve performance in a different way. Inter-organizational ICT leads to more supply chain integration, which in turn improves supplier performance, while intra-organizational ICT provides a condition under which supply chain practices are more effective. Second, the thesis shows that SC practices play an important role in making ICT beneficial, and, additionally, that ICT and associated SC practices particularly improve SC performance if demand uncertainty is high.
