No full textThis introductory chapter places Companion Species in its scholarly and societal context. It is closely connected to changing visions of differences, particularly the constructed nature of the differences between human and non-human animals. It explains its role in hagiographical and animal studies. Containing chapters referring to saints in different religious milieus, Christian, Muslim, and Old Norse, it shows the diversity of animals and saints in medieval Europe.</p

No full textThis chapter explores how human-animal encounters are described in the sister- and brotherbooks of the Devotio Moderna, both concerning sisters and brothers interacting with actual animals and their symbolic use as analogies for humans or divine or demonic manifestations. Despite the omnipresence of animals in the daily lives of these sisters and brothers as food, livestock, predators, or pets, few animals appear in their biographies. If they do surface, they are mostly present in the lives of women. What made some animals special enough to be included in these human biographies? The chapter addresses the manifold functions of references to animals: ranging from symbolic to actual, from exemplars to tempters, and from helpers to adversaries.</p

No full textDe kranten staan vol met veelbelovende waterstofprojecten. Dat waterstof de energietransitie kan versnellen staat vast, maar wat zal de bijdrage van groene waterstof zijn in de toekomst? Waarvoor kan waterstof het beste gebruikt worden? Mobiliteit of in huishoudens? Onderzoeken naar de technische toepassingen voor het gebruik van waterstof zijn in volle gang. Naast de techniek is het belangrijk om te weten wat het grote publiek weet over waterstof. Dit is onderzocht met de publieksmonitor waterstof. De resultaten van deze publieksmonitor worden besproken tijdens de Barn Talk op 3 februari om 16.15. De panelleden zullen de monitor duiden en inhoudelijk reageren en het gesprek zal geleid worden door lector Wim Elving en Marcel Koenis, business developer, beiden verbonden aan EnTranCe, Centre of Expertise | Energy van de Hanzehogeschool Groningen.Over de publieksmonitor waterstofVanuit het project Groene Waterstof Booster is een periodieke monitor opgezet om bij het publiek te peilen wat zij over waterstof weten. De resultaten van deze monitor staan centraal tijdens de Barn Talk. Ze worden geduid door Jan-jaap Aué als lector, Werner ten Kate wethouder van Hoogeveen, Ulco Vermeulen van Gasunie en Mark Peterse van Portaal. No full textThis volume presents a series of case studies concerning the use and reuse of Egyptian hagiography in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The first three contributions analyze the use of Egyptian hagiography in the context of late antique Egypt and, in particular, examine to what extent these texts can be used as historical sources for the reconstruction of traditional (pagan) religion. The other contributions illustrate the different contexts in which Egyptian hagiography was reused in the medieval West.
