Internet pathfinder SAMCRA for irritation-free internet phoning
The growth of the Internet is going to grind to a halt unless fundamental changes are made in its organisation, predicts Piet Van Mieghem, Professor of Telecommunication Networks at TU Delft. Routing, the information highways traffic control system, is already a cause for concern. And, as in the case of road congestion, simply creating additional capacity will not provide relief. Van Mieghems solution: simply offer better Internet connections for sale in order to guarantee the quality of the connection for Internet phoning or video conferencing and ensure the service proceeds without interruption. Internet service providers could then really start making money from the Internet. But this calls first of all for smart routing software which is guaranteed to find the best route through the network, preferably without having to compute for days. With the routing algorithm samcra, Van Mieghem and his Network Architectures & Services (nas) research group at Delft University of Technology have found a prospective solution that, theoretically, seems to have the best qualifications. A comprehensive simulation and test programme recently carried out together with American researchers demonstrated that the computation method also satisfied the high requirements under practical conditions.Delft University of Technolog
The black box of a mysterious disorder
Red and swollen limbs that feel hot or cold, a numb feeling, lack of mobility, and worst of all, pain. These are symptoms of post-traumatic dystrophy (PD). Researchers from various disciplines are working together in the TREND research consortium to open the black box of this mysterious disorder. Mechanical engineers at TU Delft are using mechanical perturbation systems to determine the neurological causes of the disorder. They have developed three test rigs that can be used to find out what is wrong with the central nervous system of individual PD patients. In collaboration with American neurologist, David Bashor, the Delft researchers have been the first to link a Biological Neural Network model with 2300 neurons to a musculoskeletal model. They managed to simulate the motor symptoms of the PD patients by blocking a specific connection between two types of neurons in the model. Together with medical researchers from five teaching hospitals they are now looking for the underlying cause of the disorder that will explain other symptoms such as pain, skin ailments, and gastro-intestinal complaints

Delft: Views on Delft
Around 1661, Johannes Vermeer painted what has become one of the most famous city views: the View of Delft. The city of Delft is depicted from across the water of the River Schie. We see the city as a collection of brick buildings with lower and higher towers, peaking into the sky, and being reflected in the water of the river. The light looks alive: despite the clouds it is bright, setting the buildings of Delft and the riverbank in the foreground in a palpable warmth. Delft, an intermediate European city in the province of South Holland, between The Hague and Rotterdam, has featured quite prominently in Dutch city narratives, partially thanks to Vermeer’s paintings, which showed fragments of both spatial and social characteristics of the city in the sev-enteenth century. In the same period, biologist Anthoni van Leeuwenhoek experimented with lenses and built a microscope, which led to the discovery of the micro-world of cells and bacteria. The city’s small streets, the canals, the church towers and the market squares still remind us of the times of Vermeer and Van Leeuwenhoek. But Delft today, as a centre of trade, knowl-edge and art, is a very vibrant city, with the University of Technology as one of its most celebrated contemporary inhabitants. The TU Delft is recog-nized around the world for educating progressive thinkers and innovators in varied engineering fields, while its Faculty of Architecture has raised, and keeps raising, inspired generations of architects and designers. In 2008, Hurricane Ike devastated Bolivar Peninsula, narrowly missing the more heavily industrialized and populated areas in the region. In the aftermath of the hurricane, the Severe Storm Prediction, Education and Evacuation from Disasters (SSPEED) Center at Rice University in Houston, and Texas A&M University in Galveston (TAMUG) led initiatives to propose and design flood mitigation strategies.
