Roberto Ventresca, A Flawed Germanization. Economic Cultures and Political Conflicts in Western Europe During the Great Recession (2010- 2015). Notes for a Research The paper overviews the main historiographical issues on which the research project titled A Flawed Germanization. Economic Cultures and Political Conflicts in Western Europe during the Great Recession (2010- 2015) will be built. Starting from a short reconstruction of the main factors behind the outbreak of the 2007-2008 Great Recession in Western Europe, this essay takes into account the main topics the research will deal with, such as the policies promoted by the European Union in order to face the economic and financial crisis in the time between 2010-2015 (i.e. the creation of the European Financial Stability Facility, the setting up of the so-called fiscal compact) and the role played by Germany in the conceptualization of such measures. According to this, the research aims at understanding whether and to what extent the policies promoted by the actors – conceived at both national and supranational levels – of post20017 European governance were deeply intertwined with some of the most significant economic cultures that have been contributing to shape the very features of European integration history over the last decades, such as German ordo-liberalism and Anglo-Saxon neo-liberalis

Roberto Ventresca, Crisis as a Disciplinary Tool. Neoliberalism, European Integration, and the Great Recession (2008-2012) This article focuses on the mutual interdependence between the management of the so-called post-2007 Great Recession in Europe and the transformations that occurred in the very shape of specific layers of contemporary economic thought. As for its ‘spatial’ perspective, this article refers to the institutional perimetry of the European Union (EU); with respect to its conceptual focus, it deals with the evolutions and transformations of the neoliberal school of thought. In doing so, this contribution will first and foremost explore whether and to what extent the EU management of the effects brought about by the 2007-2008 economic crisis went hand in hand with the spread and implementation of neoliberal economic policy prescriptions; second, this paper aims at understanding in which terms the spread of neoliberal-oriented measures contributed in turn to reshape the decision-making process of EU institutions after the outbreak of the Great Recession. Therefore, this article will examine how and to what extent the management of the post-2007 economic crisis, as far as European Union institutions and policymakers were concerned, implied the reconfiguration of the very features of the so-called neoliberal school of thought

Processi di liberalizzazione tra integrazione continentale e conflittualità internazionale. Italia, Europa, Oece (1947-1953)

This article examines Italy’s experience in the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (Oeec) in the aftermath of World War II. In particular, it explores the trade liberalization strategies pursued by Italy in the framework of the Organization, such as the progressive reduction of duties, tariffs and quotas on imports of goods from Western Europe’s markets. Furthermore, the article analyzes the most important negotiations that marked Italy’s participation in the Oeec trade liberalization scheme between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, namely the Stikker and Pella Plans (1950); the establishment of the European Payments Union (Epu) in 1950; the liberalization package envisaged by La Malfa in 1951; the reintroduction of quantitative restrictions by the United Kingdom and France in 1951- 1952. The aim of this article is to investigate the features, assumptions and outcomes of the “philosophy of liberalization” undertaken by Italy’s ruling classes in the broader context of the European economic integration process, and the origins of what would later become the European common market

This contribution aims at understanding how one of the political and economic areas most aff ected by the Great Recession, namely the European Union (EU), reacted to its impact and dealt with its eff ects in the short and medium term. I will consider the period between 2008, when the fi rst signals of the EU banking system’s fl aws appeared, and 2015, when the Greek referendum on the “austerity” measures imposed by the EU Commission, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB) – the so-called troika – made clear the political, economic and even cultural implications within which the leaders of the EU institutions and its member states faced the eff ects of the crisis that broke out about seven years ago. The article will also focus on the role played by some of the main EU member countries, such as Germany. This contribution will therefore off er an overview of the main turning points that marked the spread and worsening of the Great Recession in the EU area between 2008 and 2015. It fi nally aims at illuminating the interdependence between national and international choices that drove European leaderships – the EU Commission, the ECB and EU member states, with particular emphasis on to the role played by Germany – in their attempt to face the global economic and fi nancial collapse which occurred in those years

    «Alberelli senza radici». I delegati italiani alla Ccee-Oece e l’avvio del processo d’integrazione economica europea (1947-1951)

This article deals with Italy's participation in the post-1945 process of international economic reconstruction and takes into account the experience of the Italian delegation to the Conference - then, since 1948, Organisation - for European Economic Cooperation (Ceec-Oeec). The role of the main delegation's members (Campilli, Tremelloni, and Malagodi) will be fully investigated and, first and foremost, it will be highlighted how the Italian representatives to the Ceec-Oeec set up and interpreted their function of economic international experts committed to the management of the Marshall Plan. Secondly, this contribution will explore the manifold features of the relationships that emerged between the Italian delegates and Rome's central authorities (ministry of Foreign Affairs; Premiership). Thirdly, it will be assessed if and to what extent the delegates earned their own autonomy with respect to the general guidelines indicated by Italy's central government. By placing the Ceec-Oeec's case of study within the wide context of Italy's involvement in the early steps of the European economic integration process and the Cold War, this article aims to shed new light on the contradictory ways through which Italy's economic and diplomatic elite contributed to manage the country's accession to the new Euro-American «bloc» in the aftermath of WWII
