No full textThe article proposes a reconsideration of the Babel-Bibel Streit, wìhich took place at the beginning of the last century, in the cultural milieu of that time and in relation to methodological problems that are still object of discussion. The dispute was originated by Friedrich Delitzsch's lectures dealing with new interpretations of the Bible suggested by the Mesopotamian documents and the new discoveries in that field. The consequences of the controversy on the study of the ancient Near East and on interdisciplinary researches bearing on the Mediterranean area are briefly considered in the light of present developments

Terminology related to family is analyzed in administrative and legal documents. Various issues are considered, such as the impact of the imperial dimension and organization, the preservation of the family structure as functional to the administration of the territory and its exploitation, the economic function of households in production and trade, and the position of women as particularly indicative of social dynamics
