The role of spitefulness in personality disorders: Toward a better comprehension of the cluster B
IntroductionCluster B personality disorders (i.e., Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders), is characterized by a dramatic pattern of relating to others, with symptoms characterized by a difficulty regulating emotional states and behavior (APA, 2000). The desire to cause pain often characterized these disorders (i.e. borderline) involving vindictively harming another with serious and often negative interpersonal consequences. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of research about the nature of relationships between spitefulness and personality disorders.ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the association between spitefulness and personality disorders in an offenders samples (N = 305).AimsTo investigate the associations among spitefulness and personality disorders. We hypothesized that spitefulness would be differently associated with emotional and impulsive personality disorders (cluster B: antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic).ResultsAs expected, spitefulness and some personality, disorders were positively associated. Specifically, ASPD and Borderline are strongly associated with high levels of spitefulness.ConclusionsSuch results confirm the theorization that the assessment of spitefulness improve the accuracy of diagnosing of these personality disorders.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.</jats:sec
The conundrum of control. Making sense through artistic practices
Every day we encounter situations in which “things spin out of control” or in which
our forms of life are subjected to increasingly stringent controls. Our daily lives seem
to oscillate between these two poles. However, the nature of control is a difficult
conundrum to probe. Art practices help us make sense of the paradoxes related to the
enhancing interplay between control and non-control by putting them on display. The
author argues that cooperation between these two poles is essential but is currently
hindered, leading to a sterile bipolarity. What happens if this interplay between the
two poles collapses?
The essay is structured into three parts: the first defines control and its relationship
with law, life, and art. The second part characterizes artistic practices based on
their functions in human experience. The third part delves into two exemplary cases:
Taiwanese artist Tehching Hsieh and Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn
Danto’s Choice The author maintains that Danto’s attempt to reach an essentialist definition of art by way of a “philosophy of art without aesthetics” is contradictory, and puts Danto in front of a dilemma: either Danto subverts his position, considering an aesthetic reflection as the necessary presupposition of his philosophy of art (thus giving up an essentialist definition of art in favor of a weaker, but more substantive and informative, charachterization of art itself), or he sticks to his ‘philosphy of art without aesthetics’, but without being able to distinguish an artistic representation from a representation whatsoever
Per un giudizio estetico "thick". Steinberg, Johns e l'arte contemporanea
For a “Thick” Aesthetic Judgment. Steinberg, Johns, and Contemporary Art. The Author maintains that today the nature of aesthetic judgment is widely misunderstood, and that it needs a reappraisal. He proposes three theses, stemming from Kant: 1. That the notions of taste and aesthetic judgment are still essential for understanding and justifying the importance and value we (sometimes) acknowledge to (past and contemporary) works of art; 2. That aesthetic judgment does not depend on determinate methods, rules, poetics; 3. That aesthetic judgment is not a “thin” expression of individual preferences, but has a “thick” structure (conceptual and non conceptual, cultural and trans-cultural)
“Profanation”, play, etherotopia: how to save the museum from cannibalism
According to many analyses, contemporary museums are doomed to become multifunctional centers, large shopping malls for mass consumption, freestanding citadels for “cultural” shows and events, part of the phantasmatic and sensational reality to which culture is reduced. The author tries to reinterpret the function of the museums – and of the culture they represent – as sites which ought and can preserve their “otherness” in relation to the dominant experience of reality. In order to do so, he reads them in the light of notions like profanation, play, and etherotopia (Foucault)
Tullio De Mauro e Emilio Garroni
A study of the relationship between the work of Tullio De Mauro and that of Emilio Garroni would require lengthy research on their respective texts, in-depth theoretical reflection, and constant comparison with the Italian and international philosophical-cultural debate contemporary to them, with which they maintained a constant dialogue. Such investigation would also constitute an important chapter in the history of Italian culture from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Of this rich and articulated mosaic, a few individual tiles are considered here. To begin probing the “distance in proximity” that I believe characterizes the relationship between the two scholars, the essay in fact takes its cue from the different way of reading a passage from an author dear to both, paragraph 90 of Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations. A theoretical knot from which a dialogue unravels, sometimes explicit, sometimes subterranean, centered on the nature of “sense” in human experience and that of linguistic and philosophical (mis)understanding. Two often divergent perspectives emerge, but rooted in a deep ethical consonance
Cities’ Mind: Some Lessons Learnt from the Mediterranean
The city is not made up only of stones, buildings, roads, bridges or gates. The city is also a mental place that hosts ways of life, practices, perceptions, rituals, movements, moods and feelings. This distinction between the built territory on the one hand, and the way in which people inhabit and live in a city on the other, does not seem to be sustainable anymore, above all in the light of the technological transformations which over the last few decades have contributed to reconfiguring the urban space as a hybrid space. This essay, in a dialogue with the concepts of Gilbert Simondon's philosophy, offers a general picture of the evolution processes of the city, which the author considers the first and oldest example of "artificial intelligence"

Introduction. Optical coherence tomography (ОКТ) is a non-invasive instrument for studying optically heterogeneous media with micron precision, including skin cancer. However, ОКТ tissue images are very noisy. It complicates both expert and automated image evaluations. There are almost no systematic comparisons of noise reduction algorithms in the literature.Objective. To obtain comparative test results on a set of ОКТ images of skin melanoma using various noise reduction algorithms.Materials and methods. A number of noise reduction algorithms were described, which include two relatively simple classical algorithms: Wiener and median, and more complex ones: a Complex Diffusion Filter (CDF), an Interval type-II Fuzzy Anisotropic Diffusion Filter (ITTFADF) and an Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) filter, previously proposed by the author for visualizing of mesh implants. Quantitative metrics were determined: a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) metrics, an Effective Number of Looks (ENL) metrics, Structural Similarity Index Metrics (SSIM) and a correlation coefficient χ, reflecting two main principles of improving image quality: to reduce noise and to save the borders of tissue layers and heterogeneities.Results. The results of a comparative testing on a set of images, consisting of 10 melanomas (to which various noise reduction algorithms were applied) were obtained.Conclusion. The study did not reveal the best algorithm for all four metrics. According to the SNR metric, the EMD and the CDF filters perform the best depending on the type of area. At the same time, the EMD filter is either the best in all respects, or is inferior in SNR in heterogeneous areas and takes the second place in ENL. Taking as the correct hypothesis that the border preservation is more important before an integral noise estimate, it is possible to make an unambiguous conclusion about the need to use the EMD filter. As an alternative to the EMD filter, Wiener filter (which wins on the border preservation metrics) should be used or the ITTFADF, which ranked third in all used metrics.
