Logic and Irony in the Drama of the Orphan of Zhao 趙氏孤児
The Orphan of Zhao is a masterpiece of Yuan drama. The story is based on the historical records on Jin 晋 state during the Spring and Autumn period, such as Chunqiu Zuoshizhuan 春秋左氏伝 and Shiji 史記. The synopsis of the play is as follows. In the era of Duke Ling 霊公, General Tu’an Gu 屠岸賈 had the hatred towards Minister Zhao Dun 趙盾. Tu’an Gu intended to kill every member of the family and the Zhao family faced the extinction. Under the conspiracy of Tu’an Gu, the last member Zhao Shuo 趙朔, the son of Zhao Dun, was falsely condemned and was forced to kill himself. His wife was pregnant then and gave birth to a boy after Zhao Shuo’s death. Cheng Ying 程嬰, who was the home doctor of Zhao family, hid the orphan in the medicine chest and took him out of the palace. Tu’an Gu, knowing that the orphan was hidden, decided to kill all infants in Jin if the orphan in the search was not found. Facing this situation, Cheng Ying consulted the retired minister Gongsun Chujiu 公孫杵 臼 and proposed a plan to save the life of the orphan. According to the plan, Cheng took his own son to Gongsun and then informed Tu’an Gu of his place, pretending that he was the orphan in the search. Tu’an Gu was deceived by their acting and killed the child whom he believed to be the orphan. Tu’an Gu was satisfied and adopted Cheng Ying’s son, who is in fact, the orphan. After twenty years, Chen Ying told the orphan the truth. The orphan immediately carried out his revenge. Although the historical records serve as the outline source of the story, they do not provide details. The author discusses how this play successfully supplemented the lacking details with logical and plausible reasoning, in conjunction with addition of effective dramatic imagination. Along with the dramatic irony of Tu’an Gu who was unaware of the truth, the Orphan of Zhao has achieved the popularity as a well-constructed drama
Fei-yen wai-zhuan the true era of its birth and investigation of its author
Fei-yen wai-zhuan 飛燕外傳 (The Unofficial Biography of [Zhao] Fei-yen) is one of the classical-language fictions in traditional China, describing the famous romance between Emperor Cheng-di 成帝 and Zhao Fei-yen 趙飛燕 sisters in the Former Han Dynasty. The author is attributed with Ling Xüan 伶玄, who definitely had confessed that he was living with the Former Han Dynasty in his brief autobiography. However, it was too suspicious to believe, from the beginning of its appearance in the Southern Song Dynasty, scholars have been puzzled to determine the true era of its birth. Through their discussions, now it is widely accepted that Fei-yen wai-zhuan was born during the Six Dynasties, not in the Tang Dynasty, though it is still lacking in conclusive evidence. But some insist that it could be compared with the great masterpieces of Tang-tales, like Ying-ying zhuan 鶯鶯傳, Li Wa zhuan 李娃傳, Huo Xiao-yü zhuan 霍小玉傳, which belonged to the Tang Dynasty. Then should we say that Fei-yen wai-zhuan was a premature masterpiece? It still remains a great mystery to all, including its author Ling Xüan himself. This study, paying attention to the text itself, proves this tale should belong to the Tang Dynasty. Its main keywords are two, Zhen-la 眞臘 and Qi-chu Ling-hua jing 七出菱花鏡 (Water-chestnut flower shaped bronze mirror, circled by seven petals). The former, used first in the historical records in China was in the Sui Dynasty Da-ye 大業 12years(616), and the latter one likely appeared after reign of Empress Wu(690--705). These facts simply tell us Fei-yen wai-zhuan was born in the Tang Dynasty. The true author of this tale is Niu Seng-ru 牛僧孺, a famous prime minister of late Tang and was also a well-known writer of Tang-tales, who authored Xüan-guai lu 玄怪錄. We could know the close affinities between Fei-yen wai-zhuan and Xüan-guai lu. As a drafted scholar-official, all of Niu's life had been under the strife in bureaucracy with the factional parties at that time. Once the opposition party blamed Niu for violating his majesty, to write the tale Zhou Qin xing-ji 周秦行記 named Niu Seng-ru. Though its writer was anonymous, Niu was nearly accused of injury to the majesy (Lèse majesté). I contend Niu decided to write Fei-yen wai-zhuan under a pseudonym to make counterattack against a recreant writer in the same manner and to regain true pride for himself

Discovery and structural characterization of lanthipeptides from soil and rumen bacteria
As members of the ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide natural products (RiPPs), lanthipeptides possess myriad structural diversity and potential for discovery using genome-guided approaches. Biological activities of interest embedded within lanthipeptide structures include antimicrobial, antiviral, and morphogenetic functions. Continued discovery efforts seek to expand the characterized activities and structures of these compounds, as well as the enzymes that execute their biosynthesis.
The contents of this thesis are focused on the discovery of lanthipeptides using a variety of methods. Chapters 2 and 4 demonstrate the application of heterologous expression of gene clusters to produce lanthipeptides. The resulting peptide structures and enzyme activities provide intriguing insights into diversity of biosynthetic approaches present in this class of compounds. Furthermore, the abundance of precursor peptides encoded in the lanthipeptide biosynthetic systems discussed in Chapters 2 and 4 offer examples of combinatorial biosynthesis and the tantalizing possibility to harness this attribute. In contrast, Chapter 3 provides a glimpse into the targeted screening of Actinobacteria for the production of lanthipeptides, which suggests additional structural diversity. The successful application of these methods increases the number of lanthipeptide compounds and systems, which ultimately allows for a deeper understanding of and appreciation for this class of natural products.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Xi Zhao, accepted the attached license on 2017-02-14 at 19:34.The student, Xi Zhao, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2017-02-14 at 19:41.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2017-02-17 at 09:12.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10562 on 2017-08-10 at 14:29:31Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-10T19:51:37Z (GMT). How to interpret a discovery or null result of the 0 ν 2 β decay
The Majorana nature of massive neutrinos will be crucially probed in the next-generation experiments of the neutrinoless double-beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay. The effective mass term of this process, < m >(ee), may be contaminated by new physics. So how to interpret a discovery or null result of the 0 nu 2 beta decay in the foreseeable future is highly nontrivial. In this paper we introduce a novel three-dimensional description of vertical bar < m >(ee)vertical bar, which allows us to see its sensitivity to the lightest neutrino mass and two Majorana phases in a transparent way. We take a look at to what extent the free parameters of vertical bar < m >(ee)vertical bar can be well constrained provided a signal of the 0 nu 2 beta decay is observed someday. To fully explore lepton number violation, all the six effective Majorana mass terms < m >(alpha beta) (for alpha, beta = e, mu, tau) are calculated and their lower bounds are illustrated with the two-dimensional contour figures. The effect of possible new physics on the 0 nu 2 beta decay is also discussed in a model-independent way. We find that the result of vertical bar < m >(ee)vertical bar in the normal (or inverted) neutrino mass ordering case modified by the new physics effect may somewhat mimic that in the inverted (or normal) mass ordering case in the standard three-flavor scheme. Hence a proper interpretation of a discovery or null result of the 0 nu 2 beta decay may demand extra information from some other measurements.National Natural Science Foundation of China [11375207, 11135009]SCI(E)[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]

Multiplicity-one representations of divergence-free Lie algebras
AbstractDivergence-free Lie algebras (also known as the special Lie algebras of Cartan type) are Lie algebras of volume-preserving transformation groups. They are simple in generic case. Dokovic and Zhao found a certain graded generalization of them. In this paper, we classify all the irreducible and indecomposable multiplicity-one modules of the simple generalized divergence-free Lie algebras

Solar photovoltaics can help China fulfill a net-zero electricity system by 2050 even facing climate change risks
As China has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2060, electrifying its energy sector is no doubt one of the priority measures to support the transition towards a more sustainable and decarbonized energy system. Solar photovoltaics (PV) has been known as one of the most promising renewable technologies to facilitate the electrification of energy systems. The feasibility of utilizing PV to implement a nationwide decarbonized electricity system now becomes an urgent unanswered question, especially in the context of global climate change and rapid economic growth in China. Here, by using a GIS-based multiple-criteria decision-making approach we address this question by conducting a comprehensive feasibility analysis with consideration of various economic, technological, logistical, and climate change factors. We show that it is feasible for China to fulfill a net-zero electricity system by 2050, through the installation of 7.46 TW solar PV panels on about 1.8% of the national land area (mostly in western China) with a total capital investment of 4.55 trillion USD in the next 30 years. Besides, we show that future climate change may lead to a slight decrease (less than 5%) in solar energy potential, but this would not affect the capability of the nationwide PV system to meet the need for a fully-electrified energy system.National Natural Science Foundation of Chin
