    The workshop was organized by the CGIAR Research Initiative on Low-Emission Food Systems (MITIGATE+), which is implemented by a large consortium of partners. The Initiative aims to reduce annual global food systems emissions by working closely with key actors in target countries to co-create knowledge that enables them to make evidence-based decisions and address challenges in food systems discourse, policy development, and implementation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Initiative’s partners support the establishment of a multistakeholder platform and a “living lab for people” (LL4P) that will support bottom-up innovation cases to help transform food systems in Nandi county, Kenya, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop was part of a series of stakeholder workshops that aims to help clarify development opportunities, the role of different actors in Nandi county, and their interests.     Guide to facilitate a multi-actor theory of the change development process

    It remains a critical challenge for researchers and practitioners to combine innovations and interventions in system changes to help achieve sustainable development goals. Ideally, theories of change establish this link by working backward from the outcomes to identify all of the conditions that must be in place for the desired change to occur. In practice, theories of change are often developed looking forward by formulating a story about the way an intervention that is considered effective based upon a plausible claim, leads to outcomes. In either case, theories of change are based upon assumptions that are in many ways implicit and not transparent. For instance, assumptions about why and which actors need to change which behavior and what drives their behavioral changes are critical. This highlights the importance of reflecting on the steps taken when creating outputs to achieve outcomes.     Using games for social learning to promote self-governance

    Governance of shared resources needs to overcome collective action problems. Relational values and decision-making play a critical role in this process. Approaches are needed to stimulate self-governance, taking relational values into account. We review the literature on the use of collective action games as a tool to stimulate social learning and self-governance. We emphasize the importance of legitimacy in decision-making and the risk of crowding out internalized motivations — for instance, based on relational values — with instrumental incentive mechanisms. We further highlight the need to include ecological outcome indicators in the game design to allow the activation of relational values.     Games for triggering collective change in natural resource management: A conceptual framework and insights from four cases from India

    As resource users interact and impose externalities onto each other, institutions are needed to coordinate resource use, create trust, and provide incentives for sustainable management. Coordinated collective action can play a key role in enabling communities to manage natural resources more sustainably. But when such collective action is not present, what can be done to foster it? There is growing awareness that the governance of natural resources has to be adapted to the specific context. Interventions are often implemented at small scale, and the potential to scale up facilitation intensive approaches is limited. Moreover, sustainable resource management frequently fails to emerge or breaks down after the project ends. To date, researchers have typically used behavioral games to study cooperation patterns of communities. Recently, games have been adapted as learning and stakeholder engagement tools to improve management of the commons, strengthen self-regulation of resource use, and enhance constructive interactions among resource users. Combining games with other interventions and tools and facilitated discussions has been proposed as a promising approach to improve collective action institutions through experiential learning — a classic approach in education. This paper reviews existing literature and synthesizes lessons learned from a series of studies testing the use of behavioral games for institutional capacity development in India. We conclude that, while games alone will not be the solution to all natural resource management challenges games can provide a structured and therefore replicable approach for influencing behavior.     Intervening in complex agrifood systems: Assessing outcomes of a multistakeholder approach in central Mozambique

    Inclusive co-design of system innovations incorporates diverse perspectives and bodies of knowledge that can generate solutions that fit well in a local context and over time influence the socio-technical regime. In operationalizing system transformation-oriented co-design processes, research and development actors have experimented in recent decades with the role of multistakeholder approaches. A specific application of such approaches in the agrifood system context are Agricultural Innovation Platforms (AIPs). Despite the growing application of AIPs and similar approaches, documentation of AIP achievements and assessment of their outcomes beyond the lifetime of the program are rare. We present an approach for integrating the logic of outcome harvesting into the process of AIP facilitation. We also document the outcomes from an AIP approach implemented in a mixed crop-livestock farming system in central Mozambique, using a mixed-methods approach. Our results indicate likely changes in behavior and behavioral drivers associated with the AIP approach. We also share experiences on methodological challenges in assessing outcomes of AIP processes.     This paper is devoted to the development of mathematical theory of thermomechanical phase transitions. A hierarchy of mathematical models for smart materials and structures technologies is discussed in the context of models describing shape memory alloy dynamics. The authors analyze mathematical models resulting from the Falk-Konopka generalization of the Landau theory to the meso-scale level. Using center manifold techniques, the authors derive a low-dimensional model obtained directly from the three-dimensional Falk-Konopka model. The results of the theoretical analysis are supported by computational experiments
