Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to think over the construction process of narrative focus in Author, Author (2004), by David Lodge, a biographical novel about the writer Henry James (1843-1916). The narrator does not limit himself to guiding the reader through the narrative; rather, his attitude towards factual aspects of the life and literary course of the North-American novelist seems to play a fundamental role in the novel. In the fictional construction of the débâcle of "Guy Domville", in London, 1895 for instance it is possible to distinguish the narrator's bipartition, in order to tell and show two different episodes which happen in two different places, simultaneously. In other moments, the authorial voice blends with that of the subject of the enunciation to such a degree that the less attentive reader may not be capable of organizing the discourse, in a first moment. James' gradual movement away from prose fiction so as to find his playwright identity; the lack of success as a playwright; his subsequent slow psychological recovery; the return to prose fiction; and, finally, the weak result of writing and revising prefaces to his literary works in order to put together The Novels and Tales of Henry James: The New York Edition (1905), are some of the most conspicuous events in James' trajectory discussed in Author, Author

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Disturbi di Personalità in un gruppo di asmatici: studio prospettico con follow up a dieci anni

The aim of our inquiry was to value, through a longitudinal implant with a follow up after ten years if a deficit like asthma could take part in a personality adaptations as a far as to develop a personality disorder. there are two phases of the research. During the first phase were administer to a goup of 58 asthmatic persons and to an equivalent control group: Questionario Scala d'ansia per l'età evolutiva, the childrens depressions scale, the self perception profile for children, the questionnaire of fear and phobia, the family relations test. In the second phase of our inquiry were adiminstered to a group of 39 subject of the original cohort the personality questionary of structured interview for DSM axis II and defense mechanisms inventory. The results confirm among the asthmathics persons in follow up an high frequency of personality disorders and presence of disadactive defensive profiles. However the data give proof of a combined effect among asthma, deep anxiety levels, excessive weight to socials performances, bad management of aggressiveness to take a part in the codetermination of a personality disorder

Development of a novel gamma detector for the LUXE strong-field QED experiment at DESY

The dynamics of particle motion in intense electromagnetic fields is characterized by a strong non-linearity and radiation emission. Quantum electrodynamics in strong fields is the theory describing the dynamics of charge particles in such environments, whose understanding is crucial for several physical environments: from astrophysics systems to nuclear and future-collider physics. The advent of high-power laser technology renewed the interest in the investigation of such regime, with a considerable theoretical and experimental effort in characterizing this strong field regime with counter-intuitive new phenomena long-predicted by theory (i.e., Sauter-Schwinger pair production). This is the scientific context for the `Laser Und XFEL Experiment' at DESY, where the transition to the strong field regime of quantum electrodynamics will be characterized. This work is divided in two parts. In Part I, non-linear electrodynamics in intense background field is introduced. The main characteristics and theoretical tools for its description are consistently given, and the scientific opportunities from its study are presented. Lastly, the science case of the LUXE experiment is discussed. In Part II, the research activity carried on during the doctoral program is presented. As a first step, an introduction is given to the challenges in characterizing the strong field processes (specifically, the normalized field amplitude) in beam-laser SFQED experiments. The theory discussion on the measurement of the laser intensity is followed by the introduction of the Gamma Beam Profiler sapphire micro-strip detector. Finally, the results from the sapphire research and development campaign to design, develop and characterize such a detector are presented

    The Burden of Pediatric Asthma

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, imposing a consistent burden on health system. In recent years, prevalence of asthma symptoms became globally increased in children and adolescents, particularly in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Host (genetics, atopy) and environmental factors (microbial exposure, exposure to passive smoking and air pollution), seemed to contribute to this trend. The increased prevalence observed in metropolitan areas with respect to rural ones and, overall, in industrialized countries, highlighted the role of air pollution in asthma inception. Asthma accounts for 1.1% of the overall global estimate of "Disability-adjusted life years" (DALYs)/100,000 for all causes. Mortality in children is low and it decreased across Europe over recent years. Children from LMICs particularly suffer a disproportionately higher burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. Global asthma-related costs are high and are usually are classified into direct, indirect and intangible costs. Direct costs account for 50-80% of the total costs. Asthma is one of the main causes of hospitalization which are particularly common in children aged < 5 years with a prevalence that has been increased during the last two decades, mostly in LMICs. Indirect costs are usually higher than in older patients, including both school and work-related losses. Intangible costs are unquantifiable, since they are related to impairment of quality of life, limitation of physical activities and study performance. The implementation of strategies aimed at early detect asthma thus providing access to the proper treatment has been shown to effectively reduce the burden of the disease
