Design metrics for evaluating the propulsive efficiency of future ships
No full textThere is an increasing need for the ship design process to take account of environmental issues such as the emission of greenhouse gases and the likely extension of a carbon dioxide charging mechanism to international shipping. These issues, together with the need for economic viability, provide further incentives to improve the efficiency of propulsion of ships. The main components of powering are firstly reviewed. Individual components and other power saving devices are identified which should contribute to improvements in the overall efficiency of propulsion. Suitable design metrics and procedures, taking into account economic and environmental factors, are recommended for the design of future ships

Strategische alliantie voor Esprithuis: Strategische allianties als organisatie- en rechtsvorm van samenwerkingsverbanden in de bouw
No full textSamenwerkingsverbanden binnen de bouw krijgen steeds meer aandacht. De studies naar projectallianties door de faculteit Bouwkunde van de Technische Universiteit Delft zijn daar een voorbeeld van. Door de kennis over projectallianties rijst de vraag of projectoverstijgende alliantie - zogenaamde strategische allianties - bruikbare samenwerkingsverbanden kunnen zijn voor ondernemingen in de bouw. Vereniging EspritHuis is een bedrijvenvereniging die op basis van mass customization woningen wil gaan bouwen. Mass customization vraagt van de aanbiedende partij(en) een vergaande uitwisseling van informatie over de verschillende producten die worden aangeboden. De klant krijgt in een mass customized project namelijk de vrijheid om - binnen de (ruime) grenzen van de aanbieder - zijn of haar woonwensen te realiseren. De ontwikkelingen die door Vereniging EspritHuis zijn getieerd vragen van de deelnemers aan de ontwikkeling een intensieve en langdurige samenwerking. De doelen van het ontwikkelingsproces van Vereniging EspritHuis heeft sterke parallellen met de algemene eigenschappen van een strategische alliantie. De probleemstelling van dit rapport is daarom als volgt. Gezien de eerder geschetste situatie is het waardevol de strategische alliantie als organisatie- en contractmodel te onderzoeken en te beschouwen of deze is toe te passen op procesgroep EspritHuis, die op basis van mass customization een nieuw bouwproduct op de markt wil zetten. Vanuit het huidige organisatiemodel van EspritHuis is - om alle deelnemers aan de ontwikkeling te laten wennen aan de verhoudingen binnen een strategische alliantie - een stappenplan opgesteld voor de groei naar een model wat past binnen strategische allianties. Daarnaast is op basis van de nieuwe wetgeving voor personenvennootschappen een keuzeschema opgesteld om de juiste rechtsvorm te kiezen voor de strategische alliantie. Vanuit de mededingingswetgeving is niet te verwachten dat EspritHuis beperkingen zal worden opgelegd.Architectur

Local pre-processing for node classification in networks : application in protein-protein interaction
No full textNetwork modelling provides an increasingly popular conceptualisation in a wide range of domains, including the analysis of protein structure. Typical approaches to analysis model parameter values at nodes within the network. The spherical locality around a node provides a microenvironment that can be used to characterise an area of a network rather than a particular point within it. Microenvironments that centre on the nodes in a protein chain can be used to quantify parameters that are related to protein functionality. They also permit particular patterns of such parameters in node-centred microenvironments to be used to locate sites of particular interest. This paper evaluates an approach to index generation that seeks to rapidly construct microenvironment data. The results show that index generation performs best when the radius of microenvironments matches the granularity of the index. Results are presented to show that such microenvironments improve the utility of protein chain parameters in classifying the structural characteristics of nodes using both support vector machines and neural networks
Synchronous collaborative information retrieval: techniques and evaluation
No full textSynchronous Collaborative Information Retrieval refers to
systems that support multiple users searching together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. To date most SCIR systems have focussed on providing various awareness tools in order to enable collaborating users to coordinate the search task. However, requiring users to both search and coordinate the group activity may prove too demanding. On the other hand without effective coordination policies the group search may not be effective. In this paper we propose and evaluate novel system-mediated techniques for coordinating a group search. These techniques allow for an effective division of labour across the group whereby each group member can explore a subset of the search space.We also propose and evaluate techniques to support automated sharing of knowledge across searchers in SCIR, through novel collaborative and complementary relevance feedback techniques. In order to evaluate these techniques, we propose a framework for SCIR evaluation based on simulations. To populate these simulations we extract data from TREC interactive search logs. This work represent the first simulations of SCIR to date and the first such use of this TREC data
