Fiona O'Loughlin
Fiona was one of seven children in an Irish Catholic family. She grew up in a wheat farming town in South Australia.
Her first comedy show rated extremely highly with her audience.
Fiona gained international acclaim at Montreal's invitation only "Just for Laughs Comedy Festival" and at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. By 2007, Fiona's increasing international success secured her a section on "The World Stand Ups" in London putting her into the semi finals of the US production "Last Comic Standing". Based in Alice Springs, Fiona is known as the 'world's most isolated comedian'. Fiona cares for her family of five children and husband Chris, a local dentist. Together they have fostered over 30 children.
Fiona not only finds time for her family and work as a stand-up comedian, she is also a columnist, writer and presenter for the ABC Radio. She has appeared on ABC Television's "Spicks and Specks", and "The Sideshow".ComedianWrite
Art Forum - Hall, Fiona
5 November 1997. Fiona Hall's contribution to Archives and the Everyday is a work inspired by documents, paraphernalia and the table on which Queen Victoria signed permission for the Australian colonies to federate in 1901, from the Parliament House Art Collection. Fiona Hall recently won the prestigious Contempora 5 Award, and is currently working on a commissioned garden piece for the National Gallery of Australia. In 1997 she is based at the CSA as ANU Creative Arts Fellow. A special three part exhibition of Fiona Hall's work is in the CSA Gallery, 12 September-19 October
Fiona Foley: Veiled Paradise
Background
A solo exhibition titled Fiona Foley: Veiled Paradise held at QUT Art Museum. This retrospective of Fiona Foley’s art practice spans 35 years. Dr Foley is a leader in the field of Aboriginal art from the mid 1980s and is a lecturer at Queensland College of Art. New work was created specifically for this major exhibition. The exhibition ran from 19 June – 26 September and had 3040 people in attendance during this time. An 84-page catalogue containing two essays accompanied the exhibition. On the opening night speeches were made by Associate Professor Sandra Phillips UQ, Mr Wesley Enoch Indigenous Chair at QUT and Vice Chancellor QUT Margaret Sheil.
Research Contribution
Dr Foley was awarded an external grant from the Cherish Fund - Australia Council of the Arts for $49,467. Dr Foley created a new photographic series titled, The Magna Carta Tree on Badtjala country in February 2021 specifically for the exhibition Veiled Paradise. The new series contains 17 images which Foley wrote on in her essay Exploding time past and time present, published in Griffith Review 73: Hey, Utopia! The exhibition was favourably reviewed in Art Guide Australia by art critic Dr Louise Martin-Chew who writes, “researching and responding to this period of Badtjala history has been a crucial focus of Foley’s work.”
Research Significance
A biography by Louise Martin-Chew was launched during the exhibition titled Fiona Foley Provocateur: An Art Life and published by QUT Art Museum. This biography was the basis of Louise Martin-Chew’s PhD candidature at The University of Queensland. Works in the exhibition included, sculptures, printmaking, photography, film, installations, drawings and painting. Dr Foley gave classes to QUT students, QUT Indigenous staff, invited elders and members of the Institute for Collaborative Race Research.
