Spectra of magnetic perturbations triggered by pellets in JET plasmas
Aiming at investigating edge localised mode (ELM) pacing for future application on ITER, experiments have been conducted on JET injecting pellets in different plasma configurations, including high confinement regimes with type-I and type-III ELMs, low confinement regimes and Ohmically heated plasmas. The magnetic perturbations spectra and the toroidal mode number, n, of triggered events are compared with those of spontaneous ELMs using a wavelet analysis to provide good time resolution of short-lived coherent modes. It is found that—in all these configurations—triggered events have a coherent mode structure, indicating that pellets can trigger an MHD event basically in every background plasma. Two components have been found in the magnetic perturbations induced by pellets, with distinct frequencies and toroidal mode numbers. In high confinement regimes triggered events have similarities with spontaneous ELMs: both are seen to start from low toroidal mode numbers, then the maximum measured n increases up to about 10 within 0.3 ms before the ELM burst

The importance of group-fit in new director selection

Director selection is an important yet under-researched topic. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to extant literature by gaining a greater understanding into how and why new board members are recruited. \ud

This exploratory study uses in-depth interviews with Australian non-executive directors to identify what selection criteria are deemed most important when selecting new director candidates and how selection practices vary between organisations. \ud

The findings indicate that appointments to the board are based on two key attributes: first, the candidates’ ability to contribute complementary skills and second, the candidates’ ability to work well with the existing board. Despite commonality in these broad criteria, board selection approaches vary considerably between organisations. As a result, some boards do not adequately assess both criteria when appointing a new director hence increasing the chance of a mis-fit between the position and the appointed director. \ud

The study highlights the importance of both individual technical capabilities and social compatibility in director selections. The authors introduce a new perspective through which future research may consider director selection: fit. \ud

The in-depth analysis of the director selection process highlights some less obvious and more nuanced issues surrounding directors’ appointment to the board. Recurrent patterns indicate the need for both technical and social considerations. Hence the study is a first step in synthesising the current literature and illustrates the need for a multi-theoretical approach in future director selection research

Integration ELMs or Interpolation ELMs?
Recent finite element Eulerian-Lagrangian Methods (ELMs) have traded the classical notion of interpolation at the feet of the characteristic lines for that of integration. In this paper, the stability and accuracy of selected integration and interpolation ELMs is formally analyzed and compared.
We show that integration generally leads to better accuracy, but some integration ELMs are only conditionally stable. Stability criteria are established, on the basis of Courant number, diffusion number, and type and number of quadrature points.

Defining the mechanisms of multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance in soft tissue sarcoma
Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a rare, heterogeneous, and challenging group of cancers to treat effectively. The approval of pazopanib, as well as promising clinical trial data for a number of other multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), has demonstrated that this family of drug could be employed in the effective treatment of a number of advanced STS subtypes. However, treatment of advanced STS patients with multi-target TKIs has been shown to universally result in drug resistance, either through an intrinsic resistance or an acquired resistance after an initial response. The mechanisms of multi-target TKI resistance in STS are currently poorly understood and, as a result, STS patients currently lack effective salvage therapies. There is therefore a clinically unmet need to better understand mechanisms of multi-target TKI resistance in STS. This increased knowledge will allow for the development of novel treatment strategies to combat the emergence of TKI resistance, as well as salvage therapies that could be employed to treat TKI-resistant disease. In order to answer these questions, this project employed patient-derived xenograft (PDX)-derived STS cells as models of acquired and intrinsic pazopanib resistance and these were subjected to small molecule inhibitor screens. The multi-target TKI dasatinib was found to be an effective salvage therapy in pazopanib-resistant STS cells, mediated through inhibition of the Src signalling pathway. Building on this, I attempted to establish upstream mediators of Src signalling activity in Src-dependent, pazopanib-resistant STS and subsequently identified integrin signalling as a potential upstream regulator. Additionally, I determined that the KTIs erdafitinib and ponatatinib were effective in the first-line treatment of the A204 and G402 malignant rhabdoid tumour (MRT) cell lines characterised by co-activation of PDGFRa and FGFR1. Further to this, in A204 models harbouring multi-target TKI resistance towards pazopanib, regorafenib, sitravatinib, and anlotinib, erdafitinib and ponatinib were also found to be effective salvage therapies. Interestingly, the acquisition of sitravatinib resistance resulted in the emergence of collateral sensitivity to selective FGFR inhibition by infigratinib. Upon re-acquisition of resistance to infigratinib, I have also elucidated further-line strategies that can be utilised to control disease progression. Through these means, I have nominated a number of treatment strategies that could be employed in order to control disease progression and resistance in MRT, an aggressive paediatric STS subtype
