Tangible interfaces in virtual environments for industrial design
In the fields of industrial design and car manufacturing the
creation of 3D curves plays a fundamental role within the design
process: it allows the improvement of the visual appeal of
artifacts, it enhances ergonomics and the product’s commercial
competitiveness through product differentiation. When flexibility
and intuition are to be privileged it is fundamental to achieve
natural, intuitive, mathematically correct, creation and
modification of surfaces.
The scientific aim of this research is the development of an
innovative metaphor to modeling of 3D curves which maintains
the natural expertise of the designer. The major contribution of
this paper is the capability of the system to create and modify the
curve naturally, without mathematical artifices, within the limits
set by the use of Bezier curves.
The proposed metaphor combines the benefits of two
acknowledged techniques referred to as the Digital Tape Drawing
and the Eraser Pen, which allow the real-time modification of the
curve. The integrated adoption of tangible interfaces and
innovative mathematical tools, combined with the adoption of
semi-immersive environment and lightweight interaction devices,
delivers intuitive curve creation for free-form modeling within the
virtual scene. The paper describes the details of the algorithm
developed and it highlights its strengths during the styling phase
Depiction of Multivariate Data Through Flow Maps
Flow maps are graphical representations that depict the movement of a geospatial phenomenon, e.g. migration and trade flows, from one location to another. These maps depict univariate spatial origin-destination datasets, with flows represented as lines and quantified by their width. One main feature of these maps is the aggregation of flows that share the same origin. Thus, visual clutter is reduced and the readability improved. This chapter describes a novel technique that extends flow maps to visualize multivariate geographical data. Instead of a univariate color scheme, we interpolate strategic color schemes to communicate multivariate quantitative information. Additionally, our approach crystallizes on augmenting flows with pie charts. To evaluate the relevance and impact of our approach, three case studies are presented

The paper illustrates the potential of smart-phones as a medium of exchange of memories and experiences. Our application aims at providing diverse types of cultural user experience: to enable tourists to explore new places from a social-driven perceptive; to support new forms of connection and interaction between users and information (data exchange, contents sharing, feedback); to compose interactive narrative conveying the richness of information of interest to the user; to allow users to experience the narrative and underlying physical environment as a mixed-reality experience while allowing for deeper, context-specific exploration at any time through AR system

di Chieti dedicato a Giovanni Battista Vico, ma in realtà percorre strade ramificate
e in apparenza eccentriche, dato che tale evento a prima vista periferico

Flexible Multimodal Architecture for CAD Application
Multimodal interfaces are proved to increase the input\output bandwidth for a more efficient interaction in 3D activities. This work presents a novel framework designed to simplify the configuration procedures and to provide a high level of flexibility in multimodal interfaces. We propose an innovative system architecture to decouple input and output configuration from the application level and a multimodal engine designed to manage and synchronize the different inputs. The flexibility of the system is ensured by the use of a hierarchical XML-based configuration structure. This framework can be applied to test the advantage of multimodal interfaces in VRAD applications and provides tools to explore the synergy of different input\output technique

3D Objects Face Clustering using Unsupervised Mean Shift
In this paper, a novel approach to face clustering is proposed. The aim is the completely unsupervised extraction of planes in a polygonal a mesh, obtained from a 3D reconstruction process. In this context, 3D coordinates points are inevitably affected by error, therefore resiliency is a primal concern in the analysis. The method is based on the Mean Shift clustering paradigm, devoted to separating modes of a multimodal non-parametric density, by using a kernel-based technique. A critical parameter, the kernel bandwidth size, is here automatically detected by following a well-accepted partition stability criterion. Experimental and comparative results on synthetic and real data validate the approach
The self and its internal thought: In search for a psychological baseline
: Self-consciousness is neuronally associated with the brain's default mode network as its "neuronal baseline" while, psychologically the self is characterized by different thought modes and dynamics. We here raise the question whether they reflect the "psychological baseline" of the self. We investigate the psychological relationship of the self with thought modes (rumination, reflection) and mind-wandering dynamics (spontaneous, deliberate), as well as with depressive symptomatology. Our findings show a relationship between self-consciousness and i) mind-wandering dynamics, and ii) thought functional modes, in their respective forms. At the same time, self-consciousness is more related to spontaneous mind-wandering than deliberate and to rumination than reflection. Furthermore, iii) rumination acts as a mediator between self-consciousness and spontaneous mind-wandering dynamics; and iv) the relationship between high levels of self-consciousness and depressive symptoms is mediated by ruminative modes and spontaneous mind-wandering dynamics. Together, these findings support the view of the self as "psychological baseline"
